ST. MARY’S CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS: Since 1795 the
decoration of our sanctuary has always been an important
expression of the joyful celebration of Christmas at St. Mary’s
Church. With this rich heritage of more than two centuries in
mind, our decorations will be taking on a more distinctively
historical flavor. In keeping with the Christmas traditions of the
19th century, and our own time-honored customs, the
sanctuary and altar will be adorned with greens, berries, fruits,
and flowers native to Virginia and accented by beautiful
poinsettias (first introduced in Virginia by James and Elizabeth
Monroe in 1811). In that same spirit, more modern decorations
will be less prominent. We pray this design will both give glory
to “our newborn King,” and remind us all of the great gift of
faith in Him that our forebears have handed down to us.
TRADITIONAL LATIN MASS
Beginning January 18, 2008, at 7:30pm, St. Mary’s will be
offering the Mass in the “extraordinary form of the Roman
Rite,” on the 1st and 3rd Fridays of every month. Following
Pope Benedict XVI mandate in Summorum Pontificum (July 7,
2007), this is a response to many parishioners’ requests. This
form of Mass, more popularly known as the “Tridentine Mass”
or the “Traditional Latin Mass,” dates back to the 6th century,
but fell into disuse in 1970 with the introduction of the “New
Order” of the Mass, which is the “ordinary form” we use today.
Please note this celebration will normally be a “Low Mass” with
a schola or cantor.
Following up on his class this past October, Fr. De Celles will
offer a class on the practical aspects of participation in this
Mass on Tuesday, January 8, at 7:30pm in the Lyceum. All
are invited to both the Mass(es) and the class.
SERVERS: All those men or boys who are interested in serving
this form of Mass should contact Fr. De Celles as soon as
possible. There is no need to read or speak Latin before your
training.
Anyone interested in attending or serving this form of Mass
might be interested in visiting http://www.sanctamissa.org.
SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL
In today’s Gospel, we hear that Jesus will be named
Emmanuel, which means “God is with us.” The mystery of the
birth of Jesus is supremely a mystery of love. May each
Christmas find us more humble, more holy, more happy and
more full of God.
Your gifts to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul help those
who are poor and suffering to find Emmanuel, for indeed
they come to know that “God is with us.”
Hail and blessed be the hour and moment in which the
Son of God was born of the most pure Virgin Mary,
at midnight, in Bethlehem, in piercing cold. In that hour
vouchsafe, O my God, to hear my prayer and grant my
petition, through the merits of
our Savior Jesus Christ, and of His Blessed Mother. Amen
