St. Bernardine of Siena
Dear Friends,
The scandals involving priests
and their abuse of children has
shocked and continues to shock our
Church. Naturally, there has been a
reaction. Coming from a place of horrible shame, the
Catholic Church is now boldly and aggressively attacking
the problem. We recognize that it is much more than a
church problem. It is a societal evil. “Safeguard the Children” committees are now set up and operating in 97% of
our parishes. Ours is under the capable leadership of Ray
Barkes. In our diocese, a program called ”Virtus” training
is mandatory for all paid and volunteer parishioners dealing with children. Over 200 in our parish have already
taken the training which teaches adults to recognize the
possible presence of, and situations that may lead to
abuse. I dream of a parish where, not just 200, but thousands of eyes are open and knowledgeable so that an
abuser of children has no opportunity here. For that reason, I invite every adult parishioner to take the Virtus
Training. Check this bulletin for upcoming dates.
In the same vein, our Book Club will meet on
Wednesday, October 26 at 7:00 pm. addressing and discussing the issue in a novel way: Four professional actors
will read a play called “Doubt.” It is a story of suspicion
cast on a priest's behavior. Coffee and discussion will
follow. Bring your friends, it promises to be an electric
evening.

The prophets called the community to “care for the widow,
the orphan, and the stranger.” The single parent, the child
in poverty, and the refugee and immigrant in our midst
have the same claim on us today. The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) funds organizations working to break the cycle of poverty in the archdiocese. Your support of CCHD in November is needed.
“Safeguard the Children Parish Committee”
The purpose of the Virtus Program is to train adults
on how to protect all children. The training makes you
aware of the signs of child sexual abuse, the methods
and means by which offenders commit abuse, and
easy steps one can take to prevent child sexual abuse.
The Archdiocese has mandated this training for all staff
and parishioners who work directly with children. However, it is highly recommended for all who are interested in preventing child abuse.
A session is scheduled for Saturday, October 29th.
Please call Eileen Fewless at
(818)340-1440 to sign-up.

Justice & Peace Ministry
“All things for ALL people!”
Please mark Sunday, November 6th on your calendars as St. Bernardine parishioners have been
invited to join our brothers and sisters from Temple
Aliyah as they celebrate their annual Mitzvah Day.
One of the projects we will be working on with Temple Aliyah on Mitzvah Day is Project Chicken
Soup. This project prepares hot meals at a kitchen
in the park La Brea area from 8:00 a.m. until noon.
The meals are then delivered to shut-ins, many of
which are AIDS patients, in the Valley. We need
volunteers to help cook and/or deliver meals. For

VOTE “YES” on Proposition 73
Respect Life Sunday ~ The Catholic Bishops of California have endorsed Prop 73 which will require a doctor to notify at least one parent 48 hours before performing an abortion on a girl under the age of 18 years. The
Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that government is obligated to protect the rights of parents: “The
political community has a duty to honor the family,
to assist it, and to issue especially the freedom to
establish a family, to have children, and to bring
them up in keeping with the family’s own moral and
religious convictions.”
Have you remembered your parish or school
