Favorite Memory Hard to pick one. There were so many with the terrific crew. Dependents' cruise from
Maui to Pearl--wives and kids seeing Dad's ship, firing the guns, repair party demo,
eating on the mess decks. All the successful seamanship evolutions during WestPac
cruises. Foreign sights. Returning to Pearl Harbor after 7 months with lei around the
bull nose and families on the pier.
Worst Memory
Some bad ones: Losing a good man in a traffic accident in Honolulu, Getting the
dependents aboard at Maui in rough weather, having to continuously clean floating
plastic out of intakes while anchored in Bangkok. Salting up a boiler in WestPac

several gigging bands; mostly classic rock-n-roll & blues with a healthy dose of R&B,
jazz & country.
Favorite Memory I think I could write a book with all the exploits & good times I had the fortune of
having, many onboard underway, but the bounty at home in Waikiki and the numerous
foreign ports, about half in the company of good friends of the crew of the Sample and
the other half with the world's inhabitants, mostly of the female persuasion. I had some
very awesome times and know I was blessed for that experience and when I compare
notes with other sailor's epic adventures: my great ones being average to pretty damn
good of the most outrageous adventures of sailors and pretty damn good to excellent
among the average bear sailors. That for me was an important part of my Navy
experience and I really owe it to the path that led me onboard this truly unique ship and
where she sailed and the crew that made her alive. God bless evey one of you.
Worst Memory
Having been gainfully employed for most of my life before coming into the Navy at age
19, I don’t' think I was bothered by the majority of things that drove people crazy about
all this stuff people go through as sailors. I kind of embraced it, but believe me and for
anyone who really knows me will atest, for what didn't get to me as others, I got back in
spades with more of my own share of trials & tribulations at the hands of people against
my will and usually beyond my control, however, being of the belife that you make your
own luck, without doubt, the vast majority of the right of passage in being young, dumb
and full of cum, where I did a lot of growing up during my time onboard, gaining
sugnificant and useful wisdom that made me a better person as a result of living through
those things. My worst memory of all that is where at the time of not having my head out
of my ass enough in respects to not making time I would NOW wanted, to thank a few
people who made a positive difference with regard to my time onboard. I have the rest of
their lives to find them and remedy that. Time grows shorter with that regard.

My last name in German translates as such: BROAD HEAD, the leader of a large
organization or clan or what I learned loudly from a German medical student who sat
next to me while flying from Honolulu to Stuttgart, Germany in 1979. "It is said
among German's most leaders are FATHEADS. Hahaha" (I'm a third German, then
Irish, Scotch & English) Hey, I don’t have any misgivings about me not being a leader
in the military sense. I've always walked to the beat of my own drum. I'm big and loud
and I don't know that half the time when I'm having a good time. I talk way too much,
but don't mistake any of that for any lack of absorbtion of what's going on around me
and have the memory of an elephant. To some I'm a genius, others a dumb f___ fool.
Do me and yourself a favor. Keep that to yourself, unless you cut really funny jokes
about it without hate or malice. To those that have taken the time to read this, I want
you to know something. In spite of what I may know or not know or think about
myself or you, you are my sailor brothers and I have a deep respect for you and in my
heart, love you all, even if I'm about to haul off and give you what's coming. In that
respect, and in the interest of good relations. I hope I can find a way to earn your
respect, more important, hope we can be friends or at the very least when for some
reason on either of our parts, have some respect from across the room should we
desire some distance. With that, go forth and be all that you are. Happy trails, until we
meet again.

I was very proud and impressed with our crews patience, cooperative efforts, attention
to safety issues and how we valued each persons personality. The time I spent with
the SAMPLES crew was extremely valuable to me in learning about people from all
over the US. Culture differences were treated as education material and harmoniously
blended into our travels to other lands. All of these experiences helped me to look at

I found out about the reunion because I was searching to find information for a plaque
we are making for Admiral Sample to be placed in the Nimitz Museum in Texas. I am
one of several people who were on his staff, who are in the process of preparing a
Plaque, to be placed in the NIMITZ Museum in Fredericksburg, TX to honor the
memory of Rear Admiral William Dodge Sample, for whom your ship was named. I
had the good fortune to serve on his staff as his Chief of Staff for the entire time he
held the rank of Rear Admiral.
During our research for this plaque we discovered that you were having a reunion of
the ships personnel this June in San Diego. It occurred to me that the participants of
the reunion might like to know a little bit more about the man for whom their ship was
named. Since I singed on to your web site, I have received email requesting such
information. Consequently, I have decided to attend the reunion to make myself
available to any of the attendees who might like to know more about Admiral Sample,

Reserves. I was deployed with the CB's in 2003 in the beginning of the war. I took
the Chief's exam for the first time and I'm board eligible and awaiting results. I have
had a great career in the reserves and only wish that I stayed in back in 1983.

Proud father to 4 children and married to my high school sweetheart for 33 years!
Oldest son, Rick is currently serving US Army. Entered on 7/20/07 at the age of 32,
currently with a Masters Degree in Performing Arts' son Benjamin is 27 employed as a
sub-contractor framing; daughter Booke Lynn, 22 is graduating w/Associates Degree
(currently with her internship at an orphanage to teenage girls as a counselor) and last,
but not least, our sunshine "Brittany" that we were blessed with at 40 years old. Who
says young love doesn't last. Here we are at 50 and still going STGRONG!. God is
Good.
