Northland New Neighbors Newsletter
Kansas City, MO
November 2011
President’s Message
Dear New Neighbor Friends,
Club Thought
We are all different in origin,
adjusting to new surroundings
while seeking fun and
friendship. We wish to be
friendly and kind and to give
generously of ourselves to each
other and our club. We refrain
from hasty judgment and are
united in our effort to always
greet someone new with a
smile.
Club Purpose
The purpose of New Neighbors
League Club (NNLC) is to
bring together the new
neighbors of the City so they
may meet and become friends
while adjusting to new
surroundings. The club is a not
-for-profit social organization
with a variety of interest groups
and special activities, including
monthl y luncheons and
programs.
MOTTO: Fun and Friendship
CLUB FLOWER: Rose
COLOR: Pale Blue and
White
HOW can you determine if a monthly NNL coffee is a success?
WHEN you live out in the country...and...your neighbor (Sue & Al
Scoggan) hire a tree removal service on coffee day...and…”the tree
guy” stops his chain saw, removes his ear plugs...and asks Al Scoggan, “What in
the world is all that noise and what is going on next
door?”
SO not only do we know how to cook and eat...we can generate some
noise!!! (True Story!)
We had a glorious weather and 38 wonderful ladies attending the October’s coffee.
The food, oh the food was amazing. A big thank you to my wonderful co-hostesses
who made the morning so successful: Ximena Pacheco, Debbie Cramblit, Carol
Shropshire and Gladys Price. Some special help from my Kearney neighbors, Sue
Scoggan, Connie Wiest and Pat Hunsucker. Thank you ladies for all the hard
work, making the day special for all of us. Attendance at the coffees continues to
hit the 30+ level consistently so please sign up as a co-hostess as a way to make a
contribution to the club. Check out the website soon for your favorite recipes
served at the coffee. Thank you Carol Salonen for making the website so useful.
New news: Laurie Jacobson has a wonderful fall day trip to Weston planned which
sounds really fun, so check out the information and get
your space reserved. Our monthly luncheon Carla Hull has planned is at Ginger
Sue’s in Liberty. It will be another great time and please
get your reservations in on time for this restaurant.
Board News: The current board voted in a new board that starts in December
2011. Installation of new officers will occur at the November coffee. A wonderful
board of new members has volunteered so remember to reach out and support
them as they transition. Thank you ladies for stepping up, it is the best way to understand how the club works and meet our wonderful members.
Hold the Date: Mark your calendar for December 13, 2011 for our fabulous
Christmas luncheon. More information will be coming from Carla Hull and her
committee. Last year was great, this year is going to be fabulous!!!
2012 Dues: As the 4th quarter approaches, plan to renew your membership and
pay your dues by Jan. 1, 2012. The renewal is always $15.00 and is the best deal
in town. Pay any time by mail to Laura Scott, treasurer.
Look forward to seeing you soon!

New Newsletter Format
Our Newsletter format is now sent to all but a few of our
members electronically. By sending it this way, it helps
NNL by cutting down on printing costs and they are nice to
keep for future reference. It is easy to set up a file to keep
your Newsletters in. When the newsletter arrives by email
just save it by the name of the Newsletter month and move
it to a file in the MY Documents section. If you create a
master file called NNL in My Documents, the easiest thing
is to put newsletters in a sub file under NNL. It is then always there for you, and you will be surprised at how often
you need to refer back to it.
Ladies, if you are currently sharing your e-mail with the
rest of your family, you can set up your own email for free.
Google, Yahoo, AOL, Roadrunner, or the provider of your
choice can be used.
There is generally no charge and it is easy. If you want to
set up an entirely different email provider, Hotmail and
Gmail are also free. If you have any questions on ―how to‖
call Diane Feitz at 741-3930 or Liz Anderson at 587-0508.

Moving to a new city can be exciting and exhilarating and
possibly even lonely. New Neighbors League Club (NNLC)
has been successful in helping women, new to the city,
overcome feelings of loneliness. The Club does this by
bringing them together where they can meet and make new
friends while exploring their new city. Please give the
names of new residents to our Prospective Members
Chairperson, Julie Nelson at 527-3798 who will contact
women in the Northland area so NNLC may continue to
grow. You may also give names of new residents to any
board member or bring them to a coffee!
Fun Facts about the First Thanksgiving
The Plymouth Pilgrims were the first to celebrate the Thanksgiving.
The Pilgrims sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to reach North America.
They sailed on the ship, which was known by the name of 'Mayflower'.
They celebrated the first Thanksgiving Day at Plymouth, Massachusetts.
The Wampanoag Indians were the people who taught the Pilgrims how to cultivate the land.
The Pilgrim leader, Governor William Bradford, had organized the first Thanksgiving feast in 1621. He invited the neighboring
Wampanoag Indians to the feast.
The first Thanksgiving celebration lasted three days.
Mashed potatoes, pumpkin pies, popcorn, milk, corn on the cob, and cranberries were not foods present on the first Thanksgiving's feast table. Lobster, rabbit, chicken, fish, squashes, beans, chestnuts, hickory nuts, onions, leeks, dried fruits, maple syrup
and honey, radishes, cabbage, carrots, eggs, and goat cheese are thought to have made up the first Thanksgiving feast.
The pilgrims didn't use forks; they ate with spoons, knives, and their fingers.

LUNCHEON RESERVATIONS
Reservations for lunch are required by the restaurants we attend so they can provide appropriate staff and facilities
to serve our group. Most restaurants need the “final count” for our Luncheon Reservations one week before the
dinner, so all members must have their checks to Carla Hull, no later than the Friday, prior to the luncheon.
If you will be out of town, it is very important that you send your check in advance to Carla Hull, 5505 NW 62nd
Street, Kansas City, MO 64151 to be assured a reservation. Cancellations: To cancel your reservation, call Carla Hull at 816-741-3159 by NOON on the Friday before the luncheon . Members checks will be cashed if cancellations are received after NOON on the Friday before the luncheon. Checks can also be turned in at the monthly
coffees.

History of NNLC
NNLC is the official social club of New Neighbors League, Inc. (NNL), which was founded in Dayton, Ohio in
1939 by Theodore R. Biggs, a former newspaperman. Out of the business of greeting new residents grew a
recognized need for a social organization that allowed newcomers to meet others who were also new to the area.
Theodore’s wife, Bunny, lived in many cities throughout the United States, and knew the loneliness associated with
moving into an unfamiliar area. With the aid of the Ohio Federated Women’s Club, she drafted the constitution and
by-laws for NNLC. The first chapter was chartered in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1943. As the greeting service operations
were established across the country, new chapters were founded.
Dayton was the home for the New Neighbors League until 1986 when Cheryl Beaudreault (an Atlanta New
Neighbors Member) assumed the position of National President. Presently there are fourteen operations Nationwide.
Each Chapter operates independently within established guidelines, and under the directions of a Local Board and
Area Director.
