The Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital, Dublin is a voluntary teaching hospital
with national, regional and area responsibilities for ensuring the optimal health of mothers,
women and infants (up to 10,000 pregnant women pa). The Hospital is a national tertiary
referral centre for specialised services including maternal and fetal medicine, neonatology,
gynaecology and anaesthesia.
The Hospital has a substantial academic portfolio in terms of Medical and Midwifery/Nursing
Education, Training and Research. The Hospital hosts two university departments of
Obstetrics and Gynaecology, the National Cervical Cytology Training Centre and the Hub
Centre for Midwifery Education in the greater Dublin area. In addition, the Research
Laboratory in the Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital is a leading European Centre
for Molecular Biology Research.
Higher Diploma in Midwifery (2015/2016)
The 18 month Higher Diploma programme is due to commence in March 2015. Applications
are invited from Nurses who are registered on the General Division of the Register of Nurses
(or those eligible for registration) held by An Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachas na
hEireann. Places will be offered to those selected by interview at the Hospital. Successful
candidates must then apply to be accepted by Trinity College Dublin, the Hospital’s academic
partner.
The volume and complexity of births at the Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital,
together with the opportunity to experience practice in the community, offers midwifery
students a high quality, diverse and interesting education.
Midwifery students are paid a salary as per Department of Health & Children regulations.
