THE SENIOR CITIZEN - TRIVANDRUM / OCTOBER 2014
From the Secretary
Minutes of the September 2014 Monthly Meeting
This Month's get-together started in
the forenoon (10.00 am) of 18th
October at the Hassan Marikar Hall, everyone eagerly
looking for interacting with a centenarian who is
healthy enough to move around with ease, to enjoy
SCAT's Onam cultural programme and to have a
sumptuous Onam lunch. Over 170 people, a record
number, attended the function. A beautiful
'Athapookkalam' laid out artistically by Smt Prasanna
Sasikumar, Smt Jayashree Sundareshan, Smt Sarada
Nair and Smt Thankam Gopalakrishnan welcomed all
the Members.
The September 2014 Monthly Meeting was called to
order on 18th September at 10.15 am. After the
invocation by Smt Leela Kaimal, President Mrs. Vimala
Menon welcomed the Members and the Chief Guest
Sri K Ayyappan Pillai, an advocate, a Gandhian, a
venerated freedom fighter, ex-member of Kerala
University Senate and one who celebrated his birth
centenary this year.
Secretary Jose V Thomas then read the September
2014 Monthly Report. He extended Association's best
wishes to the Members, whose Birthdays and Wedding
anniversaries fall in this month. He also thanked those
who have donated to the Charity Fund during such
occasions.
Sri Mahabali (Dr K M Thomas) came in from nowhere,
went to the podium and blessed his pleasant looking,
well-dressed and well-fed subjects. He appeared to
be satisfied with the way his people lived and then
just disappeared.
Sri A Gopinatha Pillai, SCAT Member, a former Vice
Principal of Kerala Law Academy Law College and a
close associate of Sri Ayyappan Pillai introduced the
centenarian reminiscing old memories. Sri Ayyappan
Pillai was felicitated by presenting him a 'Ponnaada'.
The chief guest then lighted the traditional oil lamp
inaugurating this year's SCAT Onam Celebrations. He
then took to the podium and shared his rich
experiences and gave tips to lead a tension-free
healthy life.
Smt Rani Gopakumar of Allianz, a sponsor of SCAT's
'Run for Health' program then spoke about 'Daan Utsav',
(formerly, 'Joy of Giving' Week) a festival celebrated
every year (since 2009) during the week of Gandhi
Jayanti (Oct 2-8). Details of this 'festival' are given
separately in another page of this Newsletter.
After the Monthly Meeting, the long-awaited cultural
programme started under the able guidance of Smt
Sarada Nair, the Convener of Cultural Committee.
Onappattu, Thiruvathira kali,Vanchippattu etc were
performed by our blessed artists. The Play written and

THE SENIOR CITIZEN - TRIVANDRUM / OCTOBER 2014
DAAN UTSAV
The Joy of Giving Week, India's very own festival of
giving, has grown from strength to strength since it
began in 2009. To take the festival to rural India, it is
now renamed as Daan Utsav. This is a FESTIVAL and
not an NGO or organisation. In that sense, the "joy"
and celebration inherent in a festival are captured in
the name. It belongs to the people, just like Diwali,
Christmas, Eid, World Elderly Day or Mother's Day. A
large number of socially conscious citizens volunteer
their time across the country to encourage more and
more people to "celebrate the festival of giving".
The festival is celebrated every year, in the week
including Gandhi Jayanti, i.e., October 2-8, and brings
together Indians from all walks of life, to celebrate
"giving". From auto drivers to CEOs, school children to
celebrities, homemakers to opinion leaders, millions
of people give their time, money, resources or skills
back to society- by creating or participating in "events"
of their choice. A giving event could be as simple as a
family taking out the maid's children for an ice-cream
party, or as large as Gift Compassion that had 10,000+
school children across India making and exchanging
gifts with their peers from different socio-economic
backgrounds. You can celebrate DaanUtsav the way
you want keeping the theme in mind. Individuals do
small acts of giving across the country. Corporates
organise volunteering and giving activities with their
employees and customers, NGOs organise awareness
or fundraising events, housing societies visit or invite
orphanages or elderly homes or throw a party for their
drivers, maids and watchmen. Schools and colleges
encourage students to volunteer and many individuals,
including celebrities, do their little bit in whatever way
they can. Anyone and everyone can be part of this
festival and they can choose to celebrate it the way
they want, keeping the larger cause of giving to the
less privileged in mind.
Events are organised by individuals, social groups,
schools, colleges, NGOs, corporates, media houses and
others. Two million+ people participated in 900+
events across 80+ cities in DaanUtsav 2013, raising
several tens of crores in money and resources donated,
and millions of volunteer hours.
DaanUtsav 2014, like the previous 5 editions, will be
a 100% volunteer driven event! More than 50
volunteers in the top 10 cities formed the "volunteer
team" for JGW2013, and many have signed up for
2014 as well! The team includes entrepreneurs, CEOs,
media professionals, grassroot social workers,
homemakers and many others!
Volunteering for DaanUtsav is an amazing experience!
You learn an amazing assortment of skills ranging from
persuasion and "concept selling" to managing people
(can't get more difficult than this- managing people
who don't get paid), engaging a wide range of
stakeholders, etc. All volunteer positions are unpaid
and carry no stipends or reimbursements of travel/
other expenses. The Week is built by the cumulative
efforts of several people like you coming together for
the 'greater good' :
If this sounds like something you would like to be part
of then write to info@daanutsav.org.

Note:
Smt Rani Gopakumar of Allianz spoke about this
'festival' during our September Meeting.. More
information is collected from their website and is given
here. Those who want to involve themselves in this
'Giving' festival may contact info@daanutsav.org.
