Holy Eucharist/Communion
Holy Eucharist, also known as Communion, is open
to all of the baptized of all denominations. The
Episcopal Church has an open table and you are
invited to participate as you feel comfortable. The
ushers will direct you forward to receive the sacrament. To receive the Eucharist, place your right
palm over your left and you will be given the Bread;
the Wine will be offered and you may guide the chalice
to your lips. If you prefer not to drink from it, leave the
wafer on your palm and the chalice bearer will dip it
in the cup and place it in your mouth. If you wish to
receive a Blessing in lieu of the Elements, simply cross
your arms over your chest.
Children and Nursery Care
We love children and we invite them to worship with

that station. These wafers are made from
rice and soy.

Today’s Music
Liturgy We Live
Today’s organ prelude is the intensely introspective
“Toccata per l’Elevatione” from the Mass In festis duplicibus I by Italian composer Girolamo Frescobaldi
(1583-1643). Frescobaldi was a musician from Ferrara
and one of the most important composers of keyboard
music in the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods. He was appointed “organist” of St. Peter’s Basilica.
Frescobaldi’s printed collections contain some of the
most influential music of the 17th century. The postlude
is the very English-sounding “Fanfare” by C.S. Lang
(1891-1971). Lang was a New Zealand-born, Britishdomiciled organist, music teacher, and composer. He
studied with Sir Charles Villiers Stanford at the Royal
College of Music. He then worked as Director of Music
at Christ’s Hospital school in Horsham, West Sussex,
from 1929-1945.
by Dr. Gil Haas
Anglicans abandoned liturgical colors at the Reformation, and Anglican prayer books have never suggested a
liturgical color scheme. However, liturgical colors were
restored to Anglican worship in the nineteenth century.
Liturgical colors mirror moods of the Christian calendar. Green is the color assigned to the Sundays after
Pentecost and Epiphany (sometimes called “ordinary”
time). Violet is used for most Sundays during Lent (or
unbleached linen) and Advent (or blue, following the Lutheran custom). Rose is worn on the fourth Sunday of
Lent (Laetare Sunday) and the third Sunday of Advent
(Gaudete Sunday) indicating a lightening of the penitential seasons. White is the color assigned to Christmastide (or gold - particularly in Spain), Easter (or gold),
feasts of non-martyred saints, baptisms, and marriages.
Red is the color for Palm Sunday, Good Friday (replacing the former use of black), martyred saints, the final
four Sundays of the liturgical year culminating in Christ
the King (optional), ordinations, and confirmations.
Black has also been replaced with white on All Souls’
Day and at funerals. Blue is associated with the Virgin Mary and is worn on her feasts. Russian Orthodox
churches use orange vestments on the feasts of St. Peter
and Paul. Requested by Maryann Sonntag
The Cathedral Choir sings a standard anthem in nearly
every Episcopal church choir’s repertoire, “Rejoice in
the Lord Alway” by an unknown English composer
from the Tudor period. The text is from the “Great Bible” of 1540.
Hymn Notes
Jesus calls us; o’er the tumult - Hymnal 550
“A namby-pamby, childish style is most unpleasing to
children. It is surprising how soon they can understand
and follow a high order of poetry,” Thus wrote Cecil
Frances Alexander, author of this hymn. She was a 19th
century educator in her native Ireland and wrote many
hymns for children to illuminate and expand the Catechism. This hymn was intended for St. Andrew’s Day.
Before the Service
Please keep a moment of silence to prepare your
hearts and minds for worship and if you so desire
you may use the following prayer:
Gracious Father, we pray for your holy catholic
Church. Fill it with all truth, in all truth with all peace.
Where it is corrupt, purify it; where it is in error, direct it; where in any thing it is amiss, reform it. Where
it is right, strengthen it; where it is in want, provide
for it; where it is divided, reunite it; for the sake of
Jesus Christ your Son our Savior. Amen.
Rejoice, ye pure in heart! - Hymnal 556
Everyone loves a festival, and this hymn was written for
a Diocesan Festival in Peterborough Cathedral in 1865.
It originally contained eleven stanzas, necessary to get
all the choirs in. Based on Psalm 20:4, Psalm 147:1, and
Philippians 4:4, it is a call for everyone to rejoice.

Processional Hymn
Hymnal 550, verses 1-5
Jesus calls us; o’er the tumult
of our life’s wild, restless sea,
day by day his clear voice soundeth,
saying, “Christian, follow me;”
As, of old, Saint Andrew heard it
by the Galilean lake,
turned from home and toil and kindred,
leaving all for his dear sake.
Jesus calls us from the worship
of the vain world’s golden store;
from each idol that would keep us,
saying, “Christian, love me more.”
In our joys and in our sorrows,
days of toil and hours of ease,
still he calls, in cares and pleasures,
“Christian, love me more than these.”
Jesus calls us! By thy mercies,
Savior, may we hear thy call,
give our hearts to thine obedience,
serve and love thee best of all.
Opening Acclamation
BCP 323, Hymnal S77
W Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
And blessed be his kingdom, now and forever. Amen.
Collect for Purity
BCP 323
Almighty God, unto whom all hearts are open,
all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid:
Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts
by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit,
that we may perfectly love thee,
and worthily magnify thy holy Name;
through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
4
BCP 324
Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ saith:
Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and
with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first
and great commandment. And the second is like unto
it: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two
commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.
The Gloria
BCP 324
Hymnal S202
Glory be to God on high,
and on earth peace, good will towards men.
We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee,
we glorify thee,
we give thanks to thee for thy great glory,
O Lord God, heavenly King,
God the Father Almighty.
O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ;
O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father,
that takest away the sins of the world,
have mercy upon us.
Thou that takest away the sins of the world,
receive our prayer.
Thou that sittest at the right hand
of God the Father,
have mercy upon us.
For thou only art holy;
thou only art the Lord;
thou only, O Christ,
with the Holy Ghost,
W art most high in the glory of God the Father.
Amen.

disaster that he planned to bring on his people.
Exodus 32:1-14
A Reading from the Book of Exodus.
The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
When the people saw that Moses delayed to come down
from the mountain, the people gathered around Aaron,
and said to him, “Come, make gods for us, who shall
go before us; as for this Moses, the man who brought us
up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has
become of him.” Aaron said to them, “Take off the gold
rings that are on the ears of your wives, your sons, and
your daughters, and bring them to me.” So all the people
took off the gold rings from their ears, and brought them
to Aaron. He took the gold from them, formed it in a
mold, and cast an image of a calf; and they said, “These
are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the
land of Egypt!” When Aaron saw this, he built an altar
before it; and Aaron made proclamation and said, “Tomorrow shall be a festival to the LORD.” They rose early the next day, and offered burnt offerings and brought
sacrifices of well-being; and the people sat down to eat
and drink, and rose up to revel. The LORD said to Moses, “Go down at once! Your people, whom you brought
up out of the land of Egypt, have acted perversely; they
have been quick to turn aside from the way that I commanded them; they have cast for themselves an image
of a calf, and have worshiped it and sacrificed to it, and
said, `These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you
up out of the land of Egypt!’” The LORD said to Moses,
“I have seen this people, how stiff-necked they are. Now
let me alone, so that my wrath may burn hot against them
and I may consume them; and of you I will make a great
nation.” But Moses implored the LORD his God, and
said, “O LORD, why does your wrath burn hot against
your people, whom you brought out of the land of Egypt
with great power and with a mighty hand? Why should
the Egyptians say, `It was with evil intent that he brought
them out to kill them in the mountains, and to consume
them from the face of the earth’? Turn from your fierce
wrath; change your mind and do not bring disaster on
your people. Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel,
your servants, how you swore to them by your own self,
saying to them, `I will multiply your descendants like
the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have promised

Confitemini Domino, Et fecerunt vitulum
Hallelujah!
Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good,
for his mercy endures for ever.
Who can declare the mighty acts of the LORD
or show forth all his praise?
Happy are those who act with justice
and always do what is right!
Remember me, O LORD,
with the favor you have for your people,
and visit me with your saving help;
That I may see the prosperity of your elect
and be glad with the gladness of your people,
that I may glory with your inheritance.
We have sinned as our forebears did;
we have done wrong and dealt wickedly.
Israel made a bull-calf at Horeb
and worshiped a molten image;
And so they exchanged their Glory
for the image of an ox that feeds on grass.
They forgot God their Savior,
who had done great things in Egypt,
Wonderful deeds in the land of Ham,
and fearful things at the Red Sea.

So he would have destroyed them,
had not Moses his chosen
stood before him in the breach,
to turn away his wrath from consuming them.

Phillipians 4:1-9
Gospel Hymn
A Reading from the Epistle to the Philippians.
My brothers and sisters, whom I love and long for, my
joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, my
beloved. I urge Euodia and I urge Syntyche to be of the
same mind in the Lord. Yes, and I ask you also, my loyal
companion, help these women, for they have struggled
beside me in the work of the gospel, together with Clement and the rest of my co-workers, whose names are in
the book of life. Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will
say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone.
The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in
everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the
peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will
guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable,
whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing,
whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and
if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these
things. Keep on doing the things that you have learned
and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of
peace will be with you.
Hymnal 705, verses 1-2
As those of old their first fruits brought
of vineyard, flock, and field
to God, the giver of all good,
the source of bounteous yield;
so we today our first fruits bring,
the wealth of this good land,
of farm and market, shop and home,
of mind, and heart, and hand.
A world in need now summons us
to labor, love, and give;
to make our life an offering
to God that all may live;
the Church of Christ is calling us
to make the dream come true:
a world redeemed by Christ-like love;
all life in Christ made new.
Gospel
Matthew 22:1-14
W W W The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ
according to Matthew.
Glory be to thee, O Lord.
The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Once more Jesus spoke to the people in parables, saying:
“The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king
who gave a wedding banquet for his son. He sent his
slaves to call those who had been invited to the wedding
banquet, but they would not come. Again he sent other
slaves, saying, `Tell those who have been invited: Look,
I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves
have been slaughtered, and everything is ready; come to
the wedding banquet.’ But they made light of it and went
away, one to his farm, another to his business, while the
rest seized his slaves, mistreated them, and killed them.
The king was enraged. He sent his troops, destroyed
those murderers, and burned their city. Then he said to
his slaves, `The wedding is ready, but those invited were
not worthy. Go therefore into the main streets, and invite everyone you find to the wedding banquet.’ Those
slaves went out into the streets and gathered all whom

they found, both good and bad; so the wedding hall was
filled with guests. “But when the king came in to see
the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing a wedding robe, and he said to him, `Friend, how
did you get in here without a wedding robe?’ And he
was speechless. Then the king said to the attendants,
`Bind him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer
darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of
teeth.’ For many are called, but few are chosen.”
We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified
under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day
he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
The Gospel of the Lord.
Praise be to thee, O Christ.

Hymnal 705, verse 3

Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God.
[Silence is kept]
Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
maker of all things, judge of all men:
We acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins
and wickedness,
which we from time to time
most grievously have committed,
by thought, word, and deed,
against thy divine Majesty, provoking most justly
thy wrath and indignation against us.
We do earnestly repent,
and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings:
the remembrance of them is grievous unto us,
the burden of them is intolerable.
Have mercy upon us,
have mercy upon us, most merciful Father;
for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake,
forgive us all that is past;
and grant that we may ever hereafter
serve and please thee in newness of life,
to the honor and glory of thy Name;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we
should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto
thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God.
Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, according to
the institution of thy dearly beloved Son our Savior Jesus Christ, we, thy humble servants, do celebrate and
make here before thy divine Majesty, with these thy
holy gifts, which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his
mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; rendering
unto thee most hearty thanks for the innumerable benefits procured unto us by the same.
Proper Preface BCP 344
Creator of the light and source of life,
who hast made us in thine image,
and called us to new life
in Jesus Christ our Lord.
Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the
company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious
Name; evermore praising thee, and saying,
Sanctus
And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father,
to hear us; and, of thy almighty goodness, vouchsafe
to bless and sanctify, with thy Word and Holy Spirit,
these thy gifts and creatures of bread and wine; that we,
receiving them according to thy Son our Savior Jesus
Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death
and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed Body
and Blood.
Hymnal S114
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts:
Heaven and earth are full of thy glory.
Glory be to thee, O Lord Most High.
W Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; most humbly beseeching thee to grant that, by the
merits and death of thy Son Jesus Christ, and through
faith in his blood, we, and all thy whole Church, may
obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of
his passion.
[Please kneel if you are able]
All glory be to thee, Almighty God, our heavenly Father,
for that thou, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only
Son Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the cross for our
redemption; who made there, by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice,
oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world;
and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to
continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death
and sacrifice, until his coming again.
And here we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies, to be a reasonable, holy,
and living sacrifice unto thee; humbly beseeching thee
that we, and all others who shall be partakers of this
Holy Communion, may worthily receive the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, W be
filled with thy grace and heavenly benediction, and
made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and
we in him.
For in the night in which he was betrayed, he took bread;
and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and gave it to
his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my Body, which
is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
And although we are unworthy, through our manifold
sins, to offer unto thee any sacrifice, yet we beseech
thee to accept this our bounden duty and service,
not weighing our merits, but pardoning our offenses,
through Jesus Christ our Lord;
Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had
given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink ye all of
this; for this is my Blood of the New Testament, which is
shed for you, and for many, for the remission of sins. Do
this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.”
By whom, and with whom, and in whom,
in the unity of the Holy Ghost
all honor and glory be unto thee,
O Father Almighty, world without end. Amen.

Give us this day our daily bread.

Triumph o’er the shades of night:
Day-spring from on high, be near;
Day-star, in my heart appear.
Dark and cheerless is the morn
unaccompanied by thee;
joyless is the day’s return,
till thy mercy’s beams I see,
till they inward light impart,
glad my eyes, and warm my heart.
Visit then this soul of mine!
Pierce the gloom of sin and grief!
Fill me, radiancy divine;
scatter all my unbelief;
more and more thyself display,
shining to the perfect day.
Post-communion Prayer Let us pray.
BCP 339
[Please stand or kneel if you are able]
Almighty and everliving God,
we most heartily thank thee
for that thou dost feed us, in these holy mysteries,
with the spiritual food
of the most precious Body and Blood
of thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ;
Invitation to Communion
and dost assure us thereby of thy favor
The Gifts of God for the People of God.
and goodness towards us;
Hymnal S158
and that we are very members incorporate
in the mystical body of thy Son,
O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins
the blessed company of all faithful people;
of the world, have mercy upon us.
and are also heirs, through hope,
O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins
of thy everlasting kingdom.
of the world, have mercy upon us.
And we humbly beseech thee,
O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins
11 O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace,
of the world, grant us thy peace.
that we may continue in that holy fellowship,
and do all such good works
as thou hast prepared for us to walk in;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost,
be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen.
The Dismissal
Alleluia, Alleluia. Go in peace to love and serve the
Lord.
Thanks be to God. Alleluia, Alleluia.

Blessing
BCP 339
The peace of God, which passeth all understanding,
keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love
of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the
blessing of God Almighty, W the Father, the Son, and
the Holy Ghost, be amongst you, and remain with you
always. Amen.
[Please stand if you are able]
Closing Hymn
Hymnal 556, verses 1-5
Rejoice, rejoice, rejoice, give thanks, and sing.
Rejoice, ye pure in heart!
Rejoice, give thanks, and sing!
Your glorious banner wave on high,
the cross of Christ your King.
With all the angel choirs,
with all the saints of earth,
pour out the strains of joy and bliss,
true rapture, noblest mirth.
Your clear hosannas raise,
and alleluias loud;
while answering echoes upward float,
like wreaths of incense cloud.
Yes, on through life’s long path,
still chanting as ye go,
from youth to age, by night and day,
in gladness and in woe.
Still lift your standard high,
still march in firm array,
as warriors through the darkness toil,
till dawns the golden day.
