PARISH NEWS & EVENTS
New director of music
We are very pleased to announce that Elizabeth Barter will take up the post
of director of music when Stephen retires. Elizabeth is a Fellow of the Royal
College of Organists and a former organ scholar at Sidney Sussex College,
Cambridge. She currently works as a teacher in a school in Hampshire and
intends to relocate to Peterborough. Elizabeth’s first Sunday will be 7th
December.
Fauré’s Requiem
There will be a “Come and Sing” performance of The Requiem by Fauré in St
John’s tonight. The soloists will be Sarah Yarwood-Burke and Simon Nurser
and the organist Ivan Linford. The performance is at 6.30 and the work is
quite short – about 40 minutes. If you know anyone who would like to sing,
please tell them to contact me by email (stephenbarber@cantab.net) or
telephone (01780 470380). There is a rehearsal at 4.30.
I hope that as many people as possible will come. If you know the music and
would like to sing, please speak to me after the service. Stephen Barber
Concert tickets
Tickets for this month's series of concerts are available from Wendy Dyer.
Wendy will sell tickets whenever the church is open and after the Sunday
service at St John’s. The next concert takes places on Saturday the 18th of
October with a performance by Ensemble “Wow” and Christina McMaster
with music for piano, oboe, harp and voice.
Used postage stamps
Does anyone have an outlet for used stamps? We have a bin-full for a
deserving charity.

Christian Aid exhibition of photos and artwork from Haiti
Haiti has suffered a lot over recent years with an earthquake in 2010 and a
hurricane in 2012. This exhibition aims at showing how the people of Haiti
have worked to rebuild their lives and the impact that Christian Aid
donations have in assisting in this. The aim is to give an inspirational and
positive picture of what has happened there over the last four years,
whereas the media have generally only shown negative ones of destruction.
The Exhibition is at the Cathedral from the 14th to the 24th October and is
free to view. At 7:00 p.m. this coming Tuesday the 14th October there will
be a reception at the exhibition where Imogen Tate, who many of us know,
and who works for Christian Aid will be talking about the pictures. Again, all
are welcome and the event is free.

St. John's Ladies Group
The next meeting will take place on Tuesday the 14th of October at 7.30 pm
and will feature a talk by Mr Holdich, Torchbearer for the 2012 Olympics. For
more information speak to Mary Crowson at St. John's or Margaret Lilliman
at St. Luke's.
What does it mean to be a city centre church in Peterborough?
We all worship at a church based in the centre of Peterborough, and our
congregation is composed largely of people who do not actually live in the
Centre. Our Christian role can be very different from that of say a suburban
or rural parish, and a Study Day has been organised by Churches Together in
Central Peterborough to consider this issue. It is being held at St. Mark’s
Church Hall on Lincoln Road from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on this coming
Saturday the 18th October. It is free event with tea and coffee being
provided, although you are asked to bring a packed lunch. This is the chance
to reflect on what we should be doing in the urban environment which we
find ourselves from a Christian perspective. We do need to advise the
organisers of numbers attending, so if you wish to go or want further
information then do let me know. This is the last opportunity to sign up as I
need to send in numbers over the next couple of days.

Advent Calendars
As in previous years, Traidcraft are making available two Advent Calendars,
which incorporate the Christmas message with high-quality chocolate. Most
such calendars on the market, may have a religious message whilst others
do provide a piece of chocolate each day; but to combine the two is rare
outside of these products. The Divine calendar has a picture with daily
chocolate whilst that of the Real Advent Calendar has similar chocolate, but
behind the first window there is an interactive Christmas story booklet. Both
calendars cost £3.99 each and there is a sample of both on the Traidcraft
stall where orders will be taken.

Dinner for archaeologists
St John’s has been asked to host a dinner for archaeologists visiting
Peterborough on Saturday the 11th of July 2015. In order to do this I need
another two people in the team. I would be grateful if you could help.
Thank you.
