THE 29 SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME & ‘THIRD’ SUNDAY
THE PARISH OF ALL SAINTS, NORTH ORTH HILLINGDON UB10 9BT http://allsaintsnorthhillingdon.co.uk + THE 29TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (YEAR A) & ‘THIRD’ SUNDAY + SUNDAY, 19 OCTOBER 2014 Everyone on this earth belongs to God. All are made in his image. Therefore it is right that all men and women, ‘from the rising to the setting of the sun’, should know the God to whom they belong. The only desire of our God is that all should know and love him and find in him the he fulfilment that they seek. Even a pagan king, like Cyrus (of Persia), Persia) is used to further this knowledge of God. Just ust as Jesus uses Caesar’s head to make the point again: all belong to God and the mission of all who acknowledge that belonging is to help others to find it. This is exactly what we see Paul, Silvanus and Timothy doing as they write to the people of Thessalonica (in Greece),, to whom they carried the Good News of Jesus Christ. As this edition of the Bulletin has had to be prepared a bit in advance, vance, please listen out in church for any late notices or announcements. We welcome warmly any visitors to All Saints’ this morning. Please come across to the Hall for refreshment and fellowship after the 10 o’clock Parish Eucharist,, even if you cannot stay for very long. Sunday School meets at 10 o’clock in the Hall this morning.. It being half term week, Sunday School does not meet next Sunday, but re-convenes convenes at 10 am in Hall on 2 November, when we celebrate our Patronal Festival of All Saints. HYMNS AT 10 O’CLOCK (from NHWS & NEH) Procession: 213 Gloria: 363 (NEH) Offertory: 271 Communion: 158 Post-Communion: 179 Recessional: 37 Introit: I call upon you, God, for you will answer me; bend your ear and hear my prayer. Guard me as the pupil of your eye; hide me in the shade of your wings. Collect: Let us pray (for the gift of simplicity and joy in our service of God and man):: Almighty and ever-living living God, our source of power and inspiration, give us strength and joy in serving you as followers of Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. TO-DAY’S DAY’S SCRIPTURE READINGS A reading from the prophet Isaiah (45:1 & 4-6): I have taken Cyrus by his right hand to subdue the nations before him. him Thus says the LORD to his anointed, Cyrus, whose right hand I grasp, subduing nations before him, and making kings run in his service, opening doors before him and leaving the gates unbarred: For the sake of Jacob, my servant, of Israel, my chosen one, I have called you by your name, giving you a title, though you knew me not. I am the LORD and there is no other, there is no God besides me. It is I who arm you, though you know me not, so that toward the rising and the setting of the sun people may know that there is none besides me. I am the LORD, there is no other. The response esponse in the Psalm (95) is: Give the Lord glory & power! A reading from letter of S Paul to the Thessalonians (1:1 1:1-5): We constantly remember your faith, your love and your hope. From Paul, Silvanus and Timothy to the Church C of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: grace to you and peace. We give thanks to God always for all of you, remembering you in our prayers, unceasingly calling to mind your work of faith and labour of love and endurance in hope of our Lord Jesus Christ, before our God and Father, knowing, brothers and sisters loved l by God, how you were chosen. For our Gospel ospel did not come to you in word alone, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with much conviction. Gospel Acclamation: Alleluia, alleluia! Your word is truth, O Lord, consecrate us in the truth. Alleluia! A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew (22:15-21 21): Give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God. The Pharisees went off and plotted how they might entrap Jesus in speech. They sent their disciples to him, with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that you are a truthful man and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. And you are not concerned with anyone's opinion, for you do not regard a person's status. st Tell us, then, what is your opinion: Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not?" Knowing their malice, Jesus said, "Why are you testing me, you hypocrites? Show me the coin that pays the census tax." Then they handed him the Roman coin. He said to them, "Whose image is this and whose inscription?" They replied, "Caesar's." At that he said to them, "Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God." THIS WEEK’S INTERCESSIONS We pray: for our parish and for its needs; for Freddie George Gordon Thompson, to be baptised here this afternoon, and his family and friends; for our own work of mission in North Hillingdon; for those who, in our own day, take the message of Jesus Christ to farflung and dangerous corners of our world; for those presently working on mission stations abroad as teachers, nurses and doctors; for members of our Armed Forces presently serving in the Middle East and in Sierra Leone. for the sick and for others in any kind of trouble or need: Peter Glover, Doreen Lawrence, Beryl Mearing, Hazel Parris, Pam Redhead & Eddie Tutton. for those whose anniversary occurs at about this time: Julia Adamson, Jean Birch, Paul Buckingham, Harold Child, Nigel Haines, Enid Johnson, Albert Mearing, Tony Sawyer, Eileen Young & Henry Martyn (translator & missionary in India and Persia, +1812). An up-dated list of our Social Events’ Calendar is now available for you to take away. You will find it on the big table. Many thanks to Carol Clarke for assembling this for us. 4. Also on the big table are some copies of a ‘newsy’ church publication entitled Together. Please help yourselves. I have asked for just ten copies to begin with; if we run out, I can obtain some more. 5. I give early notice that I would like us to have a short (three-part) Advent Course this year. It will meet at the Vicarage for an hour from 7.30 pm on 3, 9 & 16 December for a period of silence, prayer and reflection. We shall use the newly-published CofE course for the Christian journey called Pilgrim. It is an excellent resource and will enable us to make a good spiritual preparation for Christmas.
