Luongo gets 67th career
shutout in Panthers’ win

BUFFALO, New York, Oct
18, (AP): Roberto Luongo
stopped 26 shots for his
67th career shutout, leading the Florida Panthers to
a 1-0 win over the Buffalo
Sabres in the NHL on
Friday for their first victory of the season.
Luongo moved past Patrick Roy
into sole possession of 13th place on
the career shutouts list. Luongo also
extended his shutout streak against
Buffalo to 183 minutes, 19 seconds.
Sean Bergenheim scored in the
second period for the game’s only
goal, sending a wrist shot between
Mike Weber’s legs and past Sabres
goalie Jhonas Enroth.
Enroth finished with 34 saves for
Buffalo.
Canucks 2, Oilers 0
In Edmonton, Alberta, Ryan Miller
made 28 saves to record his 30th
career shutout and improve to 9-0 in
his career against Edmonton.
Radim Vrbata and Daniel Sedin
scored for the Canucks, who got their
season-opening third straight win.
The Oilers are winless in five
games for their worst start in club
history.
The Canucks got on the scoreboard
with four minutes left in the second
period as Sedin made a nice pass
through the goal-mouth to a wideopen Vrbata on the other side of the
net for his third goal of the season.
Sedin then added an empty-netter
in the final minute.
Oilers goalie Ben Scrivens also
finished with 28 saves.
Predators 2, Jets 0
In Winnipeg, Manitoba, Pekka
Rinne made 31 saves for his 33rd
NHL shutout and Nashville spoiled
Winnipeg’s home opener.
Predators newcomer Mike Ribeiro
scored in the first period, and James
Neal connected in the third for
Nashville.
Ribeiro redirected Seth Jones’ shot
past Ondrej Pavelec. Neal, another
offseason acquisition, beat Pavelec
through traffic with a puck that
appeared to glance off a couple of
Jets.
Rinne played only 24 games last

season because of a hip injury.
Blue Jackets 3, Flames 2
In Columbus, Ohio, Jack Skille,
Ryan Johansen and Matt Calvert
scored goals and Sergei Bobrovsky
stopped 29 shots.
Calgary trailed 3-0 when Mason
Raymond broke up the shutout early
in the third period. Josh Jooris narrowed the lead with a goal in his
NHL debut, scoring off a pass from
Mark Giordano with over eight minutes left.
The Flames, five games into a sixgame road trip after opening at home,
threatened to tie until the end.
Calvert had an assist to go with his
goal. Mark Letestu had two assists as
the Blue Jackets wrapped up a threegame homestand.
The Blue Jackets were 4 for 4 on
the penalty kill to stay perfect this
season in nine attempts.
Red Wings 4, Maple Leafs 1
In Toronto, Johan Franzen scored
twice and Henrik Zetterberg had four
assists. Gustav Nyquist and Justin
Abdelkader also scored and Jimmy
Howard stopped 23 shots for Detroit.
After scoring his first two goals of
the season, Franzen left the game late
in the second period with a lowerbody injury and did not return.
Nyquist’s fourth goal in four
games made it 3-0 with 1:44 to go in
the second period.
Mike Santorelli scored for Toronto,
ending Howard’s shutout bid in the
opening minute of the third period.
James Reimer finished with 31 saves
for the Maple Leafs.
Ducks 2, Wild 1
In Anaheim, California, Andrew
Cogliano ended Minnesota’s seasonlong shutout streak with a shorthanded goal early in the third period, and Corey Perry got the
tiebreaking goal with 8:25 left to lift
Anaheim.
Frederik Andersen made 27 saves
in the fourth consecutive victory for
the Ducks, who made a dynamic rally
to win their home opener.
Cogliano’s goal was the first
allowed all season by the Wild and
goalie Darcy Kuemper, who set the
club record for consecutive scoreless
minutes.
Perry then put the Ducks ahead
when Jason Zucker’s pass went off
rookie Matt Dumba’s skate and
straight to the former NHL goal-scoring champion, who eventually scored
his fifth goal in five games on a
rebound.
Zucker scored and Kuemper
stopped 24 shots for the Wild.

the best way to handle his first loss
was with a joke.
No, the Cavs are far from perfect
— and far from a finished product.
Chandler Parsons and Jameer
Nelson scored 19 points apiece and
the Dallas Mavericks beat Cleveland
108-102 on Friday night, handing the
Cavs their first loss of the preseason.
Dirk Nowitzki added 16 points and
nine rebounds for the Mavericks,
who befuddled Cleveland with a
zone defense and stuck with their
starters in the fourth quarter when the
Cavs rested LeBron James and Kyrie
Irving. Kevin Love didn’t play in
Cleveland’s third exhibition in four
nights.
Raptors 109, Thunder 90
In Wichita, Kan, Terrence Ross
scored 22 points in the first three
quarters to help the Toronto Raptors
beat the Oklahoma City Thunder
109-90 on Friday night in an exhibition game.
Jonas Valanciunas scored 12 of his
14 points in the first half for Toronto
(5-1). DeMar DeRozan and Jordan
Hamilton had 13 points.
Russell Westbrook led Oklahoma
City (2-3) with 16 points on 5-of-15
shooting. Anthony Morrow and
Andre Roberson each had 15.
Roberson was 7 of 9 from the field
and had 10 rebounds.
Oklahoma City star Kevin Durant
had surgery Thursday to address a
bone fracture in his right foot and
will be out at least six weeks.
Hornets 96, Wizards 86
In Washington, Al Jefferson scored
20 points and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist
had 12 points and 11 rebounds as the

the Hornets (3-2). Charlotte trailed

Paul Pierce limped off the court
after banging knees while attempting
to set a pick late in the second quarter. The veteran forward went straight

Bucks 105, Wolves 98
In Cedar Rapids, Iowa, rookie
Jabari Parker had 21 points and 11
rebounds, O.J. Mayo scored 19
points and the Milwaukee Bucks beat
the Minnesota Timberwolves 105-98
on Friday night.
Giannis Antetokounmpo also had
19 points for Milwaukee (2-3) in a
matchup between Andrew Wiggins
and Parker, the first two picks in the
recent NBA Draft.
Wiggins finished with 10 points
and six rebounds. Gorgui Dieng led
Minnesota with 16 points.
The Timberwolves (1-2) gave
Ricky Rubio the night off, instead
starting Zach LaVine at point guard.
Clippers 101, Jazz 97
In Los Angeles, Chris Paul and
Jamal Crawford hit clutch 3-pointers
in the final minute and the Los
Angeles Clippers beat the Utah Jazz
101-97 Friday night for their first
victory of the preseason.
Crawford finished with 25 points
and Spencer Hawes added 24. Blake
Griffin had 17 points, and Paul finished with 11 points and nine assists
for the Clippers (1-3).
Gordon Hayward scored 22 points
to lead Utah (4-1). Trey Burke had 21
and Derrick Favors added 19 points
and 10 rebounds.

Bucks’ Sanders has minor surgery
Celtics ‘trade’ Anthony
to Pistons for Bynum
BOSTON, Oct 18, (AP): The Boston
Celtics have traded center Joel
Anthony to the Detroit Pistons for
guard Will Bynum.
Bynum averaged 8.7 points and 3.9
assists over 56 games last season, his
seventh in the NBA.
Anthony has averaged 2.3 points and
3 rebounds in his seven years in the
league. He spent the first six years with
the Miami Heat before he was traded to
the Celtics in January. He scored 22
points in 21 games after coming to
Boston.

Heat 115, Warriors 108
In Kansas City, Mo, Chris Bosh
scored 21 points and Luol Deng and
Shawne Williams added 19 each to
help the Miami Heat win their first
game in the preseason with a 115-108
victory over the Golden State
Warriors on Friday night.
Trailing 103-102 with 5:16 left,
Mario Chalmers hit a 3-pointer to
give the Heat (1-4) a lead. Shabazz
Napier added a 3-pointer 30 seconds
later to extend the lead and give the
Heat the victory.
Klay Thompson scored 27 points
to lead the Warriors (4-1) while
David Lee added 22 points. It was the
first loss in the preseason for Golden
State.
The Warriors led 56-47 at the half
and built their advantage to 12 in the
third quarter before the Heat rallied

In Portland, Ore, Robin Lopez had
13 points and seven rebounds and the
Portland Trail Blazers beat Maccabi
Haifa of Israel 121-74 in an exhibition game Friday night.
Brody Angley, who played at Santa
Clara, led the Greens with 18 points
and Jeff Allen, who played at
Virginia Tech, added 14 points.
Damian Lillard started for the
Blazers after sitting out the last two
games with a sore left foot and finished with 11 points. Portland’s
starters played about 25 minutes
apiece and coach Terry Stotts got a
good preseason look at his bench
players.
Lopez hit a layup and a free throw
to give the Blazers a 48-28 lead that
they stretched to 54-35 at the half.
