We celebrated Bandana Day!
The Somerset House children celebrated Bandana Day on the last day of Term 3! More than
300 bandanas were bought through the school whilst others had already been purchased
directly from Pick n Pay. Thank you all for supporting this worthwhile cause so enthusiastically!

Welcome to Mrs Charmaine Roynon and Mrs Natasha van Greunen
Mrs Roynon has taken up residence in one of the most exciting classrooms in the country! The
Knowledge Centre is her space and she is loving being in there. We hope that she is going to
enjoy a long and happy stay at our school as our new Director of ICT Integration. Her job is to
push the boundaries as far as innovative teaching methodologies are concerned. Watch this
space!
Mrs van Greunen has replaced Mr Knott as our Grade 5 teacher and is also involved with Social
Science teaching in Grade 6 and 7. She is here until the end of the year and we are enjoying
her input and energy. We hope it will be a brilliant term with us!
Grade 3 Jungle Gym
We would like to request that the Jungle Gym outside the Grade 3 classes does not get used by
younger children while they wait for their siblings to finish school. It is very difficult for our Grade
3s to focus on their work with younger children playing right outside their classroom at the end
of the day. Your co-operation with this request would be greatly appreciated.
Founders’ Day
Our annual Founders’ Day Celebration takes place on Friday 31st of
October and will include the opening of our new Performing Arts and
Assembly Space. We will start at 08h30 sharp in the Simpson Hall and
then move down to the new building at 09h30 for the opening.
Mrs Nicky Newton King, the CEO of the JSE will be our guest speaker.
All parents are welcome to attend this special event.
Completion of Building Celebration
There will be a picnic and music concert in the Cloetenburg Quad on the evening of Founder’s
Day, the 31st of October. All our parents and pupils, both past and present, are invited to
explore the campus and see the new spaces that have been created. This will start from
18h00. More details will be made available soon, so please diarise this date.
Our Condolences
We are saddened by the news that Peter Millson passed away yesterday. Mr Millson made a
considerable contribution to our school and was the Chairman of the Board at Somerset House
from 1972 until 1979. He remained a great supporter and friend of the school and our thoughts
and prayers are with his family during this time.

Summer Uniform
Children may wear either summer or winter uniform for the first 2 weeks of term. As from week
3, all children should be in summer uniform. The School Shop is open on Tuesdays and
Thursdays from 07h30 to 14h30. You can also e-mail shop@somersethouse.co.za to place an
order, the cost of which will be added to your school account. We would like to thank those who
have made donations of second hand clothes; we really appreciate your kindness and
generosity. Please feel free to donate any unwanted hangers as we are always in need of them.
Recycling
It was a very quiet start to the new summer season of recycling with most of
The Crew rehearsing for their Music Tour. Jordan Heymans was first on the
scene, sorting out the various early bird deliveries. Robert Underwood and
Chris Young-Pugh soon joined and took over the transport arrangements,
leaving Mr Rank and his colleague to be the GIPs for the morning. Mrs
Bouah and Mrs van Greunen assisted Jordan with the W & M end of things –
all in all a rather gentle start to the final term! Hopefully all The Crew will be
back next week and let the banter begin…!

Artists of the Week
Well done to Stephanie Bihl in
Grade 6 for her sensitively drawn
and
carved
linocut.
The
composition with its balance of
positive and negative spaces is
satisfying, as well as the varied use
of line and shape.
More of the Grade 6 linocuts will be
featured in the next few weeks.
Kitchen Staff Training Course
During the holidays the Prep and Oakwood kitchen staff attended a follow-up training course
presented by SPROS Training Academy on the topics of Food Safety and Hygiene. The training
was very informative and Lena, Cynthia, Lana and Cathy look forward to the next module which
they will attend in the first term of 2015

BEN WINS ANOTHER GOLD
Ben van Schalkwyk represented the WP U13A Sevens
Rugby Team at the National Sevens Tournament
which was held in Krugersdorp on the 6th and 7th
October.
Ben’s Western Province Team had a
phenomenal tournament, beating the Cheetahs 40-0,
the Sharks 35-0 and the Lions 38-0 on day 1 in the
pools. On day 2 they played against the Limpopo Blue
Bulls in the quarter final, beating them 40-5, after
which they beat the Lions 31-17 in the semi-final. This
put them into the Cup final against Border, which they
won 44-19. This is the first year that the WP U13s have won both Craven Week and Sevens in
the same year. A brilliant performance; congratulations, Ben!
U11 FREEDOM PITSENG CRICKET TOURNAMENT
Six of our U11 cricketers represented the SW Cricket Club at the U11 Freedom Pitseng Cricket
Tournament in Worcester from 6 – 8th October. This is a prestigious tournament where the
Boland Provincial Teams play against the strongest WP Youth Club sides. Sean Irwin, Arden
Scholtz, Daashay Reddy, James Royden-Turner, Joshua Cox and Nic Lombard played a huge
role in their team’s success. The SW Club Team had a fantastic tournament and earned
themselves a spot in the final where they beat the Boland A Team by 9 wickets. James
Royden-Turner was also named the batsman of the tournament. Five Somerset House boys Daashay, James, Joshua and Arden (U11) and Kai Greig (U13) have been selected to
represent the Freedom Pitseng Cricket Team at the Provincial Tournament which takes place in
Worcester from 11 – 15th December. (Joshua
was unfortunately absent when the photo was
taken). Arden and James have also been
invited to represent the Western Cape U12
Team on a tour to Sri Lanka in 2015.
Congratulations to all our boys - these are
wonderful achievements of which we are
extremely proud!
MINI CRICKET MATCHES
On Wednesday our mini cricket teams played against Lochnerhof and Applewood. Our boys
played the Lochnerhof teams, and our U9 girls played against Applewood. It was the first time
that all our teams were playing their matches on the Webb Field, and it was a buzz of activity as
six matches were played at the same time. The U9 girls had a lot of fun and enjoyed their match
thoroughly, with some outstanding play from Mary Vine-Morris who batted very well, and Suzy
Whall being the best bowler for the day. Our boys came up against some tough opposition from
Lochnerhof, and most of them still seemed a bit rusty after the winter season. Too many shots
were played into the air, offering easy catches to teams who were set to take every opportunity
given to them to take wickets. We hope to see some improvement from the boys and also a
return to the basics, so that there will be fewer wickets given away during their innings.
Some of the noteworthy performances were as follows:
 U7: Tristan Nel good batting, scoring 9 runs, and Louis Le Riche for his improved bowling,
 U8: Best batsman for their teams: Ben Cox and Luke Griffiths, and for their good bowling
Nathan Behrens taking 1 wicket for 4 runs and Awsten Kelly, 1 wicket for 6 runs.
 U9: JP Mans for his good bowling performance, taking 2 wickets for 2 runs.
Well done to all our children who took part in the matches yesterday.
SUMMER SPORTS GET UNDERWAY

also managed to take
place, with the pool
temperature
at
a
comfortable 22 degrees.
