Founders’ Day and
The Opening of Haydock Hall
HeadLines…
Founders’ Day
We are a fortunate school indeed to be able to call a guest speaker like Nicky Newton-King one
of ours! It was such a privilege to have her, and her family with us for our Founders’ Day
Celebration and the opening of the new Haydock Hall. She spoke of all the memories she had
of her time at this school and it is evident that the spirit of our school has not changed much.
Our choirs performed brilliantly as we were treated to their version of Adiemus to start
proceedings. They also entertained us superbly at Haydock Hall with their performance of
“Your Song” by Elton John.
Haydock Hall
The opening of Haydock Hall marks the end of our building process. We are delighted with the
outcome and the potential that now exists on the campus. We are grateful to all our parents for
the patience shown during the last 20 months. The concert tonight is a small gesture of thanks
for this. We hope to see as many of our school family as possible walking through the new
buildings and then enjoying the music of DNA Strings on the lawn!
Lion Awards
Lion Shields are the top shields to be earned by a pupil in the school. We are very proud of
Caitlin Garvs, Josefine Hjälmner, Garrick Hugo, Rebecca Japhet and Ben van Schalkwyk on
being awarded these shields today.
Mrs Debbie Underwood
Mrs Underwood will be leaving Somerset House to take up a position at Rhenish Primary in
Stellenbosch next year. She has been at our school for the last eight years and has not only
made the Science Lab one of the busiest rooms in the school with all her animals (and pupils),
but she has also transformed the MAD Programme and made it what it is today. We wish her
well with her remaining time at Somerset House.

Comment
The U11 boys played excellent tennis against De Hoop. The De Hoop
boys proved to be worthy opponents, resulting in some close, exciting
games. Nic Cilliers and Sean Irwin teamed up, while Gordon Morrison
and Nic Lombard partnered for their doubles match. Both teams played
brilliantly and Somerset House won both matches 6 games to 3. Nic
Cilliers won his singles match, with a score of 6 games to 2. Sean Irwin
played a tough singles match demonstrating great skill, with De Hoop
winning. Gordon Morrison played some outstanding tennis, narrowly
losing his singles match 5-6. Although Nic Lombard put up a great fight
and never gave up, he was beaten by a very strong De Hoop player.
Tennis was the winner, with the overall result being shared with 26
games for both schools - a fair result for some great tennis played. We
are extremely proud of their achievements.
Well done to Julia and Andrea who won their doubles match 6-2. Chloe
and Cáit lost their doubles match 4-6, but won both their singles
matches. Julia also won her singles match, and after a tough match just
short of 2 hours, Andrea narrowly lost her singles match 5-6. A great
fight by all our girls. Well done!
A great afternoon of tennis! All matches were pushed to the wire. The
doubles matches were very entertaining, with Ziggy and Kai fighting
back from 3-1 down to win 6-3. Matthew and Sam also played a great
game and won their doubles match 6-4. Matthew won his singles match
comfortably 6-1 whilst Kai, Ziggy and Sam fought hard, but lost narrowly
6-7. Matches were 3 all, but overall Somerset House won the encounter
36 – 29. Well done, boys!
The boys tried hard, but unfortunately lost to Lochnerhof B. Well done to
Munnik and Carel for winning their doubles match and to Carel for
winning his singles match.
Somerset House played good tennis, with Yvonne Huysamer winning
her singles and doubles matches. Kayla Coetzee unfortunately injured
herself, but managed to win her doubles match. Well done to Carla Du
Plessis and Tatum James for their improved effort. Great effort, girls!
UNDER 11 A & B CRICKET – TUESDAY 28TH & WEDNESDAY 29TH OCTOBER
The Dream Team took to their new field on Naburn Meadow on Tuesday this week against
Raithby Primary. Captain Gordon Morrison won the toss and elected to bat. Wyatt Painter and
Robert Pyle started off steadily, giving us a solid start. Gordon soon joined the attack and
enjoyed a fine Captain’s innings of 53 runs. The Dreamers set a target of 97. Our bowling was
tight and soon the wickets began to fall. Ethan More O’Ferrall, Connor Barrett, Jake Love and
Gordon all took two wickets each. Some fine fielding resulted in a run out and Robert Pyle took
a wonderful catch behind the stumps, leaving Raithby 5 runs short of the target.
The A team welcomed Rhenish to Naburn Meadow on Wednesday and we were put in to bat.
James Royden-Turner and Sean Irwin (29) set the pace and started the scoreboard rolling,
despite some excellent bowling and fielding from the Rhenish players. Josh Cox and Daashay
Reddy continued the attack, adding 18 and 22 respectively. After the 25 overs, we had 117 on
the board. There was a tangible excitement around the field as Josh set his field, ready for
action. His brilliant catch off Cruebelle Diko’s first ball was phenomenal and gave the team a
real boost. It was then the day for catches – James took four in his Point position, Josh took
three at Square Leg, Sean took two behind the stumps and his stumping was the icing on the
cake. Some super bowling from Cruebelle, Daashay, Jordan Heymans, Reece Aitken and
Robert Underwood maintained the pressure and Rhenish were all out for 100.
The match was a wonderful display of cricket. Both teams played super cricket, the etiquette
was just right and it was a most enjoyable and exciting afternoon – thanks to all 22 players!
CRICKET RESULTS:
On Wednesday, our Girls’ Mini-Cricket played matches against Somerset College at home. The
matches were tightly contested and our girls performed very well. Our U7 Fairy Girls narrowly
lost their match 31-28, with Madison McConnach being the best bats-lady and Keisha Leibrandt
being the best bowler. Our U8 Girls lost way too many wickets during their batting innings,
resulting in them having to defend a very low score. This resulted in Somerset College beating
them easily. This, however, did not discourage our girls, and good improvement in bowling was
displayed by Kashvi Reddy, Roxanne Painter and Tamsin McDonald. The U9 Falcons managed
to turn the tables against their opposition with a win of 22-19. Mary Vine-Morris was the best
bats-lady and Emily van Steenberghe was the best bowler. Well done to all our girls for a good
afternoon’s cricket.
On Wednesday our Boys Mini Cricket played matches against Beaumont and the following
results were achieved:
 U7 Dolphins lost 47-30 with Louis le Riche batting well and Keegan Uys bowling well.
 U7 Impis won their match 41-37 with Nicholas Oscroft being the best bowler and Harry
Paine the best batsman.
 U8 Lions won 60-23. Well done to Daniel Stenslunde who scored 18 runs in his 6 balls
faced and Nicholas Hall for his great bowling.
 U8 Titans won 26 – 19. Best batsman was Leo Strydom and the best bowler was Joshua
du Plessis taking 1 wicket for 2 runs.
 U9 Cobras won their match convincingly 63-38. Matthew Lowe was the best batsman –
he scored 15 runs off 6 balls. Andrew Bevis-Challinor was the best bowler.
 U9 Super Kings lost their match 33-40 with a fantastic contribution from Allen Rautenbach
as best bowler.
 U9 Eagles won their match 31-16 with Aidan Norris being the best bowler and Campbell
Ridl the best Batsman.
On Friday evening our First XI team played a do-or-die match in the SWCC Day/Night cricket
tournament. They displayed one of the best performances they have had all year. Our team
batted first and managed to score 121 runs for 2 wickets down with Kai Greig 70 and Ziggy
Dalton 15 scoring a 109 run partnership putting us in a good position at 121 runs for 2 wickets in
15 overs. Our bowling and fielding was of a high standard and we restricted the opposition to 93
for 5 wickets with Jonathan Harley taking 3 wickets for 11 runs in 3 overs. Well done to our
boys! They will now play in the semi-final on Friday 7th November.
