Kern Memorial United Methodist Church Nineteenth Sunday After Pentecost
Kern Memorial United Methodist Church Nineteenth Sunday After Pentecost October 19, 2014 11:00 am Service The new Sunday night service has a name and a launch date! REVIVE will begin on November 2 at 6:00 pm, preceded by a “pot-luck” supper and fellowship time at 5:00 pm! This service will be unlike anything else in town, and we are inviting all those who are young and young atheart to join in the celebration! The main entrée and drinks will be provided for the meal, but we are asking for help with the side dishes. If you can bring a casserole, vegetable, or dessert, please sign up on the tear-off. You may also sign up on one of the designated clipboards in the Narthex and Family Life Center entry way. Those preparing side dishes are asked to bring them to the Family Life Center at 4:30 pm on Sunday. Child care is available for children under age 4. In addition to our excitement over the start of this new service, we are happy to share that Kern has received a grant from the Holston Conference Witness Ministry Team to support the service, which is intended to reach young adults and young families (and the young at heart). Youth Hiking & Picnic—TODAY! Youth are asked to meet and be ready to leave the church at 1:30 pm for a hike and picnic in Townsend, TN. We will return to the church between 6:00-6:30 pm. Wear comfortable clothes, and bring water shoes if you want to play in the creek. For additional information, please check our youth Facebook page or contact Linda Morrison (414-4319 or lee@llmorrison.net). Friday, October 31, 5:30-8:00 pm Trunk-or-Treat is less than two weeks away! We are hoping to have a parking lot full of cars and candy— PLUS games, face-painting, and food in our Family Life Center. How can you participate? Decorate your car and fill your trunk with candy! We also need people to bring cookies or brownies, and also donations of candy. There will be candy donation bins in the Family Life Center and the Narthex for drop-offs. Please let us know if you will be here and how you will be able to help, by signing up on the tear-off. Contact Jennifer Shell, Mike Cox, or Ginger Meadows with questions. Visitor & New Member Class Series If you are a visitor or have recently joined the church, please join us for the last two classes in this 4-week series! This series is designed to help newcomers get better acquainted with Kern—and for us to get to know you better too! Classes are held during the Sunday School hour (10:0011:00 am), in the UMW Room (bottom of stairs, outside Fellowship Hall). TODAY—The Methodist Church—The Organizational Structure—Pastor Don Morris will lead this class, sharing information about the structure of the Methodist Church from the Conference to the Cabinet to the Local Church. This class will help participants gain a better understanding of the United Methodist Church and what it means to be a Methodist. All are welcome. October 26—Membership 101—Member Expectations & Opportunities—If you have taken the first three classes and are interested in joining the church, come and learn about the next step. If you have not turned in your Every Member in Ministry commitments or Estimate of Giving forms for 2015, there’s still time to do this. Feel free to drop your forms in the offering plate today, or drop them by the church office this week. This is our process for connecting you to ministry and others in the church. THE WORSHIP OF GOD Nineteenth Sunday After Pentecost Greetings and Announcements * Entrance of the Cross Prelude Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates arr. Jonathan Reuss Invocation Let us not be deceived by our own pious vocabularies: we are quite up to our necks in the world. The "sanctuary" into which we gather belongs to the very realm from which it ostensibly offers---sanctuary! Yet, by entering profoundly into worship we might nevertheless hope to gain at least some critical distance by which to call into question our myriad involvements in a world from which we can by no means extricate ourselves. If to be in the world is to be some place in the world, if to live in a free society is to be governed by its laws, if to enjoy the benefits of the nation is to obligate oneself to its support, then our pursuit of "the Kingdom of God" is probably something less radical than our evangelical rhetoric suggests! Though we cannot escape the world, we do have an interest in ordering our relationships within it. If we no longer expect its sudden apocalyptic dissolution, we do not give up on finite historical redemptions. Lord of the Church and the world, help us to remain stubbornly un-conformed to a culture that, unchecked, would assimilate us entirely, vigilant against the Church's adoption of its methods, means, and models, determined to subject ourselves to the transforming influences of the life and teachings of Jesus who calls us not away from but into the world. Amen. * Hymn When in Our Music God Is Glorified Responsive Psalm 99 819-820 * Gloria Patri * Hymn 68 70 Fairest Lord Jesus 189 In This Very Room Ron Harris Pastoral Prayer and The Lord’s Prayer Anthem Offertory Sentence Today's gospel lesson contains the following instruction to devout Jews living in occupied Palestine at the time of Jesus: "render unto God the things that are God's"! Would that be a tithe, or some greater or lesser portion of one's resources? Or would it simply be everything, all that one has and is? Dear parishioner, it is for you to decide! Presentation of Tithes and Offerings Offertory Jesus, I Will Ponder Now * Doxology 94 Children’s Circle * Hymn arr. Paul Manz Julie Martin Breathe on Me, Breath of God * Gospel Lesson: Matthew 22:15-22 420 Barbara Osborne Sermon “Jesus and the Fourth Philosophy” * Hymn How Great Thou Art Donald Morris 77 * Benediction * Choral Benediction * Postlude Toccata Giocosa * Congregation Standing Gilbert M. Martin Tear-Off Announcements SPECIAL CALLED MEETING—TODAY! There will be a brief called meeting of the Leadership Council today at 12:15 pm in the Fellowship Hall to discuss a proposal from the Staff-Parish Committee concerning Kern’s Youth Director Position. Other matters pertinent to Charge Conference may also be mentioned. All Council members are encouraged to attend. The program will be World Thank offering and plans for the UMW Bake Sale/Mini Bazaar on December 6. NEW WEDNESDAY NIGHT STUDY A Different Kind of Christmas is a five week study for those who want to re-think the way that we “do” Christmas. If Christmas festivities and obligations leave you weary and wanting something more, this will be a great group to discuss alternatives. We’ll use the video and Mike Slaughter’s book, Christmas is Not Your Birthday, as the springboard for our discussions. Marcia Walker will lead this group on Wednesday nights beginning on November 5. If you are interested in participating, please contact Marcia (414-7321 or marciawalker@comcast.net) or sign up on the tear-off.
