A Year of Growth & Expansion
Embracing the Future
Dear Friends,
It is always a humbling experience to assemble Lancaster
General College’s Annual Report. It is very rewarding to look
back into the last academic year and see how much has been
accomplished by our faculty, learners, and staff. Nevertheless,
we must also recognize that this report is just a snap shot of the
many things we do and cannot fully communicate the amount
of talent and hard work invested in building our success.
In June 2011, Lancaster General College’s Board of Trustees
adopted a revised mission, new core purpose, and envisioned
future statements that set the stage for our future. These
guiding principles became the foundation for the development
of our 2011-2015 Strategic Plan. Growth, both in quantitative
and qualitative terms, and sustainability are dominant themes
in the new plan. The strategic direction provides an impetus for
productive change and a framework to promote the missioncentered work that is ongoing.
A few months before the adoption of the Strategic Plan, our College had a successful visit with representatives from the Middle
States Commission on Higher Education, the regional body responsible for Lancaster General College’s accreditation. The visit
was a culmination of an intensive, college-wide, self-study process that allowed for reflection, review, and a re-dedication to
our mission. As a result of this visit, the College was awarded ten years re-accreditation and received ten commendations that
recognized the high level of commitment of our faculty, the sustained focus on strategic planning, our culture of assessment, and
a focus on simulated learning.
The list of accomplishments from the past year is quite long. I invite you to read this Annual Report which documents the
activities and efforts undertaken, and the accomplishments achieved from July 2010 through June 2011. We are particularly proud
of the extraordinary efforts of our faculty, learners, staff, and alumni. Their hard work and dedication contribute to the success of
our College today and in the future.
Sincerely,
Mary Grace Simcox, EdD, RN
President

A Former Leader is Honored
T he Margaret A. Judge, RN, MSN Memorial Scholarship honors a former director of the Lancaster General
Hospital School of Nursing and a Lancaster General Hospital VP of Nursing. She retired in 1995.
“Peggy”, as she was called, was initially educated at St.
Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing in Carbondale,
PA, received a BS degree from Millersville University,
a MS degree in Education from Temple University
and a MSN from the University of Delaware. Her
career started in the Operating Rooms of Philadelphia
General Hospital, Bryn Mawr, PA Hospital and
Wilmington, DE Hospital. She moved to Lancaster
with her husband, Dr. Joseph Judge in 1959.
Mrs. Judge held several positions on the Nursing staff
of Lancaster General before becoming an Instructor
in the LGH School of Nursing. She was appointed
Director of the School of Nursing in 1978. She was
noted for her proactive approach to innovations in
nursing education, curriculum and staff development.
As a nationally recognized member of the National
League for Nursing, she was involved with changes
in nursing education and was active in the certification
of hospital based nursing programs. As VP
of Nursing, she was instrumental in
developing the Open Heart Surgery
program of the hospital.

Mrs. Judge loved her profession of
Nursing, and her goal with her students
was to instill in them a strong educational
basis for their future careers, a sense of
responsibility and caring, and a sense of
pride in their chosen profession.
The Margaret A. Judge, RN, MSN, Memorial
Scholarship was established by her loving
husband, Dr. Joseph Judge and daughter,
Carolyn Krombach. Memorial contributions

Increasing Enrollment, Increasing Space
As the College has experienced increased enrollment, the
need for classroom space has increased. In the Fall, the College
expanded into the Burle Business Park, where our students
currently park. The College occupies 5,000 square feet at the
Burle Facility that contains a lecture hall, 18 faculty offices,
testing cubicles, lounge and conference room. This new
classroom space seats 150 and is equipped with lecture capture,
which has the ability to record lectures; interactive projection
system, and a TurningPoint audience response system,
enabling students to participate in lectures by electronically
submitting responses.

Letter from New Board Chair
I
am very proud to be your new chairperson for the next three years and excited about the
healthcare opportunities that will be presented to us in the very near future.
We have a very proud history starting with attracting the highest quality students along with
growth in enrollment. We are proud of our staff, faculty, and programs that along with our
students have served our community well.
As we reposition Lancaster General College for the future, we are committed to preparing our
students for whatever challenges and opportunities they may encounter.
The Board will be implementing a new strategic direction through 2015 that will prepare our
students as healthcare providers of the future. For example, we want to shift from a teaching
culture to a learning culture, to a more collaborative approach versus silos, develop graduate
programs, a digital learning environment, and much more.
The Board has much pride in our students and knows how hard they work and the many sacrifices they make. Each one will have
an impact in healthcare hopefully in Lancaster County for decades to come and we are committed to providing them with the
highest quality healthcare education.
