TARGET AUDIENCE
This course is designed for pediatric orthopaedic surgeons and other
orthopaedic surgeons with an interest in current pediatric orthopaedic
practice. Primary care physicians and allied health professionals are also
welcome but are reminded that the program is concerned specifically
with pediatric orthopaedics.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
At the end of the symposium, participants should be able to:
1. Discuss recent developments and advancements in the area of
pediatric orthopaedics.
2. Identify management options for the treatment of early-onset
scoliosis.
3. Identify management options for the treatment of congenital limb
deficiency.

PURPOSE AND CONTENT
Friday, October 24, 2014
Lectures will be presented by John Birch, M.D. and Charles Johnston,
M.D. In addition, the staff at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children
and returning fellows will be making presentations. Ample time will be
allowed for discussion of lecture topics between the audience and the
faculty.

At the conclusion, participants should be better informed about
state-of-the-art management of early-onset scoliosis and
congenital limb deficiency.

GUEST LECTURERS
John G. Birch, M.D.
Dr. John Birch is assistant chief of staff and medical
director of ambulatory care at Texas Scottish Rite
Hospital for Children. He is a graduate of the University
of Windsor in Ontario and received his medical degree
from the University of Western Ontario. Dr. Birch
completed his internship at Ottawa Civic Hospital and
his orthopaedic residency and clinical fellowship in sports
medicine at the University of Ottawa. He served as the
chief pediatric orthopaedic resident at the University of
Florida and was a traveling visiting fellow at Newington Children's Hospital and
Alfred I. DuPont Institute. Dr. Birch also completed the Harrington Fellowship in
Pediatric Orthopaedics and Scoliosis at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children.
Dr. Birch is a professor in the department of orthopaedic surgery at The University of
Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas and is a fellow of the Royal College of
Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and a fellow member of the American Academy
of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Charles E. Johnston, M.D.
Dr. Charles Johnston is assistant chief of staff at
Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. He
is a graduate of Yale University and received his
medical degree from Columbia University College
of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Johnston completed
his surgery internship at The University of Texas
Health Science Center at San Antonio Bexar County
Hospital and his orthopaedic surgery residency at the
University of Virginia Medical Center. Dr. Johnston
also completed the Harrington Fellowship in Pediatric Orthopaedics and
Scoliosis at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in 1982. Dr. Johnston is
a professor in the department of orthopaedic surgery at The University of Texas
Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. He is also an active staff member at
Children’s Medical Center Dallas and an orthopaedic consultant for the Texas
Department of Mental Health and Retardation at the Abilene State School and
the Denton State School.
