NOVEMBER 2014 MISSION STATEMENT “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” - John 3:16 We, the men, women and children of Faith, united in the knowledge that faith in Jesus Christ as Savior from sin is the only way to enter heaven, exist as a congregation to proclaim the message of salvation to the world by reaching out to those who do not know Christ and by nurturing those who do, encouraging them to lead lives of Christian service, all to the glory of God. Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth. Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. Know that the LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the LORD is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations. Your God is one of faithful love. And it is this God of faithful love that made you. Hearing that makes us think about creation. By his word God fashioned man out of the ground breathed into him the breath of life, and from his rib God made his loving wife. Yet, think harder about the details of creation. God created male and female in his image. Now that doesn’t mean that God created us to look like him, or that God has flesh and blood. To be created in God’s image means that man was created to have a relationship with God based on holiness and righteousness. Without sin mankind could know God and serve him with joy and true thanksgiving. Yes, scripture is right. We were fearfully and wonderfully made. But as much as that is true, it seems the writer of the psalm is focusing on, not just how God made us, but how God made us to be his people. How he made us to be the sheep of his pasture. One might hear that and think “of course we’re God’s people. We’re the good guys,” but to jump to that conclusion is to ignore a sad reality. By our words, thoughts, and actions, we have demonstrated that the image of God has been twisted and lost in us. Now, by nature, we are not the people of God, but if we belong to anyone it is sin, death, and the devil. But your God, a God of faithful love, made a promise. He promised to save your from your lost condition. And he was faithful to that promise. He sent his son to be a good shepherd and round up the sheep who had wandered off. The Good Shepherd, Jesus rescued us from the jaws of Satan by laying down his life on the cross. And then this Good Shepherd rose again to gather those sheep he saved into one flock. And that image that was once lost, is being renewed in us by Christ’s work in our hearts. He leads us to the pasture of God’s Word where we are filled with true peace knowing that our sins are forgiven and directed to live in ways that are pleasing to God. So lift up your voices in praise and thanksgiving, because in Christ, God’s love for you endures forever. Amen. Pastor Yahnke FABRIC OF FAITH PAGE 2 WHAT’S HAPPENING AT YOUR CHURCH? November 2014 DAILY BREAD We know God can do big things when we ask, but we might assume some requests are beneath him— too small to bother the Lord of the universe with. Not so, Jesus used the example of bread to teach us this truth. To the disciples, then, daily bread represented the unspectacular. They’d seen Jesus heal disease, calm storms, and walk on water. They knew God could deliver the big-ticket items. But Jesus was telling them not to leave God out of the seemingly ordinary parts of life. Bread was the most common element of the Jewish meal. Nothing could have been considered more ordinary. They didn’t always each rich, elaborate feasts, but they had bread almost every day. School might be considered one of these ordinary parts of life. Every child goes to school. We might put it on par with daily bread. Yet God wants us to pray to him, to meet all Join Us For An Event Tid Bits Our ministry is an active one. We often have lots going on in and out of school. The month of November is no exception! We have our Hoop and Serve-a-thon fundraiser, Fall Band Concert, Movie Night, and basketball season tips off. You can find our entire school calendar on our website: www.stjohnslannon.org. Look us up and join us for an event if you can. ⇒ Parent -Teacher conferences are scheduled for November. ⇒ St. John’s will be having a movie night on November 21st. You are invited to join us for some fun and fellowship while enjoying a showing of The Lego Movie. ⇒ Congratulations to our volleyball and soccer teams this fall. Both teams played well. Our volleyball team was fortunate enough to be crowned conference champions. of our daily needs. This includes asking Him to bless the work of our Christian day school. Give thanks to God that He meets all of our basic needs. Continue to pray that God bless the work of our school that happens each and every day. There is no request that is too big for our God. Then again, there is also no request too small for our God who loves to care for all of our needs. The focus of our forums was 1) Discuss the relationship between our Faith and St. John’s congregations, specifically as it relates to the school 2) Address school governance and how it might be improved 3) Discuss future planning of our school’s ministry. The feedback collected from the members of Faith and St. John’s will be instrumental in helping us to plan a viable and long-term ministry. We hope to process the results of our forums and summarize it in a way that it can be presented to the congregations in the near future. Please contact Principal Marohn if you have any additional feedback you would like to share or have any questions about the forums.
