A single great commission Compels us from above To plan and work together That all may know Christ’s love. We all are called to service, To witness in God’s name. Our ministries are diff’rent; Our purpose is the same: To touch the lives of others With God’s surprising grace, So ev’ry folk and nation May feel God’s warm embrace. Now let us be united, And let our song be heard; Now let us be a vessel For God’s redeeming Word. We all are one in mission; We all are one in call, Our varied gifts united By Christ, the Lord of all. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION M: C: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. | 2 Page M: C: M: C: M: C: Brothers and sisters in Christ, the Bible speaks with urgency when it says that God wants all people to be saved and come to a knowledge of the truth. Our marching orders as individuals and as a church are to go and make disciples of all nations. Yet, as we look at our lives and priorities, as we consider how we spend our time and where we invest our resources, do we really share Jesus’ passion to save the lost? Our sin separates us from God, but God wants to remove this barrier so that we are free to serve in love and joy. He calls us to confess our sins so that he can assure us of his love and forgiveness in Christ. I invite you to join me as we confess. Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt. God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. HYMN RESPONSE ....................... “I Hear the Savior Calling” – CW 560 vs. 1,5 I hear the Savior calling! The gospel comes to me. My eyes once closed in blindness Are opened now to see That I myself was helpless To live eternally, But, dying, Christ did save me, And now he calls for me! | 3 Page I hear the Savior calling! His call has urgency! Each moment souls are dying; Soon comes eternity. And so, my precious Savior, This is my humble plea: Prepare me for my mission For you are calling me! PRAYER OF THE DAY M: C: The Lord be with you. And also with you. M: Let us pray. Lord God, you love the sinner and want all people to be reconciled to you through Christ. You have called us to be witnesses of your love in Christ to the world around us. Inspire our witness that all may experience the peace of your forgiveness and the hope of his resurrection; C: M: C: Through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. He lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now, and forever. Amen. Please be seated ANTHEM (8:00) ..................................................... Just as I am and waiting not To rid my soul of one dark blot, To thee, whose blood can cleanse each spot, O Lamb of God, I come, I come. Just as I am, though tossed about With many a conflict, many a doubt, Fightings and fears within, without, O Lamb of God, I come, I come. Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind; Sight, riches, healing of the mind, Yea, all I need, in thee to find, O Lamb of God, I come, I come. Just as I am, thou wilt receive, Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve; Because thy promise I believe, O Lamb of God, I come, I come. Just as I am; thy love unknown Has broken ev’ry barrier down. Now to be thine, yea, thine alone, O Lamb of God, I come, I come. Please stand SERMON ...................................................Matthew 18:10 – 14 (p. 974) “Do We Share God’s Concern For the Lost?” | 5 Page NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, Who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, Who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Please stand | 6 Page PRAYER OF THE CHURCH M: C: M: C: M: C: M: Eternal God and Father, we give you thanks for the blessings we share as members of your holy Church, for your gracious Word and sacraments, for opportunities to worship and to grow in faith and knowledge, for occasions to serve and be served, for fellowship with believers in our congregation and in our synod. Help us to rejoice in these blessings, dear Lord, and to use them faithfully. Jesus Christ, Lord of the Church, you give grace to your people by calling us to be your witnesses in the world. Open our eyes to see the great and noble mission that lies before us. In the hurting eyes of the lonely, in the pained eyes of the sick, and in the searching eyes of the lost, help us to see your face, O Jesus, and to serve others as we would serve you. Awaken us to the opportunities you give to proclaim your message of love. Holy Spirit, giver of life, through Word and sacrament bestow on us the wisdom and power we need to witness clearly and to act boldly. Help us to speak the truth in love, to give the reason for the hope we have, and to conduct ourselves with gentleness and respect. Set our hearts on fire as we work and witness for Christ. Hear us, Lord, as we pray for a family member, an acquaintance, a neighbor or a friend who does not believe in you, or whose faith is weak or troubled. Silent Prayer M: Bless the Church with men and women who are willing to proclaim your Word in places where we cannot go. Keep them and their loved ones in your care, and let nothing hinder their work. By the power of the gospel, restore their spirits each day, so that they do not lose heart as they serve us and others. | 7 Page C: Move us to support them with our sincere prayers and generous offerings. Special Prayers and Intercessions M: C: Wherever your Word is proclaimed, O Lord, grant it success. Let your kingdom come to us and others, so that we and many more might join the assembly of saints and angels to sing your praise forever. Savior of all, hear our prayer and help us in our mission. Amen. THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. THE SACRAMENT M: The Lord be with you. M: Lift up your hearts. | 8 Page M: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. M: It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who promised that wherever two or three come together in his name, there he is with them to shepherd his flock till he comes again in glory. Therefore, with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song: | 9 Page WORDS OF INSTITUTION: M: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” M: The peace of the Lord be with you always. | 10 Page Please be seated DISTRIBUTION HYMNS……………………………………….Please use the Hymnal Take and Eat – CWS 741 I Come, O Savior, to Your Table – CW 310 M: O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and give you peace. Presiding Minister & Message – Pastor Bill Heiges Organist – Mrs. Heather Sulzle Worship Series: “Parables that Go Against the Flow” Jesus often taught in parables-earthly stories with heavenly meanings. What w don’t realize is that with many of these parables Jesus was attempting to get at and change the common religious misconceptions of the day. What many people in the church believed or how they lived was not in accord with God’s Word and will. So Jesus told a story that was meant to expose their sin and call them to repentance. Its interesting to see how little things really change. The church today struggles with the same kinds of issues the church wrestled with in Jesus’ day. With this series we’ll take a look at some parables that Jesus shared and apply them to the church and our personal lives today. October 26 “The Parable of the Lost Sheep” Jesus states that he would gladly leave the ninety-nine behind to rescue that one lost sheep. Do we in the church share Jesus’ passion for the lost? Are we willing to sacrifice some of our own comfort and care for the sake of the lost? What does this parable mean for our personal and our church’s priorities? | 12 Page Pastor Bill Heiges, Administrative Pastor: Ext: 311; wheiges@emanuelnl.org Pastor Marcus Schulz, Vision/Mission/Outreach Pastor: Ext: 310; mschulz@emanuelnl.org Matt Foley, Principal: Ext: 112; mfoley@emanuelnl.org Jack VandeGuchte, Youth & Family Staff Minister: Ext: 314; jvandeguchte@emanuelnl.org Contact Information for the Executive Director If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, you can put a note in my mailbox in the narthex (located next to the confirmation picture boards), call me at 982-3943, or email RYerkeyRet@Charter.Net Richard Yerkey, Executive Director Last Weekend’s Attendance: 862 Last Weekend’s Guest Attendance: 70 Emanuel Prayer Group: 920-740-0782 ionedorschner@gmailcom or prayers@emanuelnl.org Large Print Hymnals Large-print copies of the service are available for anyone in need – please ask an usher for a copy. The previous registry was started approximately 40 years ago and contains the names of many members who are no longer with us. Signing of the registry signifies that the individual signing is in agreement with and supportive of the constitution and bylaws that were approved and adopted on June 16, 2014. The constitution registry must be signed by all eligible (18 years of age male members) who intend to vote at any congregational meeting. The opportunity to sign is given at the beginning of all congregational meetings. However, since this is a new registry it will also be available in the Emanuel office for anyone that would like to stop in and make sure that your name is in the registry. Hat & Mitten Drive Brrrrrr, it's getting to be that time of year again. With the warmth from your hearts, please consider donating any new or gently used mittens or hats for people in need. A Christmas tree will be in the narthex where you can clip your donation starting the weekend of November 2. The items will then be distributed. Please have your donations on the tree by December 1. Thanks in advance for your support. Military Bible Sticks Once again we have an opportunity to truly make a difference. Members of our Armed Forces, especially those who are deployed overseas in places like Afghanistan, are requesting the Bible on Military Stick. The requests are much greater than the financial ability to provide. Faith Comes By Hearing is an organization committed to providing these Military Bible Sticks to men and women of our Armed Forces. Donation boxes will be placed at the exits on Veteran’s Day weekend, November 8, 9, and 10. Each stick costs $25.00. Our congregation’s response in the past has been overwhelming. I hope we at Emanuel can again respond to this great need and help bring the Word of God to soldiers who desperately desire it. Thank You Snow Removers It would be hard to get through the winter season without all the help removing snow from the parking lots and sidewalks at Emanuel. Each year we have many people who shovel, snowblow, plow and haul snow away so that everyone is able to get into the church and school on a daily basis. Thank you to all of you who continually help and take on this enourmous task. We appreciate all you do! Thanks You Mowers & Landscapers Many dedicated volunteers have been up and about all summer to be sure the Emanuel grounds were well taken care of. Thank you to each of you for all the time and effort you have given to make sure everything looks so amazing. Let It Snow – Let It Snow!! Snow shovelers are again needed to prepare for the winter season. We are looking for several people to help, especially to clear things out before services on the weekend. If you are able to help with snow shoveling, please call the Emanuel Office at 982-5444. Thank you in advance for the help! | 23 Page Bible Classes “Prepared to Answer” Sunday Morning Bible Study Sundays through November 16 – 9:15 a.m. You’ve heard the objections. These and many more! There are many paths to God. What kind of God demands worship? There are hypocrites in the church. Religion is a crutch for the weak. Where is God when I’m hurting? I want to feel good about myself. All the church cares about is money. Can a loving God send people to hell? Christianity is so anti-woman. I can’t handle your outdated view of sex. How do I know I’m a Christian? I’ll be rejected by family and friends. You’ve heard the objections, but you don’t feel prepared to answer them. What if, instead of racking our brains for just the right passages, we would begin instead with the right story? A story that sets the living Jesus before their eyes? We might come away concluding, “All I really needed to know I learned in Sunday school.” This approach, called Bible Story Evangelism, might be just what we need, not just to set Jesus before those outside the church but also before those who are in danger of drifting away. Can you tell the story of Peter’s denial? of the Emmaus disciples? of the weeds and the wheat? of Judas’ betrayal? of the woman at the well? of the woman who anointed Jesus with the expensive perfume? Then you’ve already got a vivid way to respond to six of the objections above. Even if you can match them up yourself, we encourage you to join us at 9:15 a.m. in the church proper. We’ll be looking at stories of Jesus and asking ourselves, “Who needs to hear this?” Week 7 – October 26: “Jesus Before Pilate: What is truth?” Week 8 – November 2: “The Crucifixion: Where is God when I’m hurting?” Week 9 – November 9: “The Faith of the Canaanite Woman: Isn’t Christianity anti-woman?” Week 10 – November 16: “Jesus Appears to Thomas: Why can’t I just believe what I see?” | 24 Page Women’s Fall & Winter Bible Classes Emanuel’s new ministry group, Women of HIS Word, would like to invite all women to the following upc oming Bible studies. Genesis traced the history of God's promise to send a Savior for His rebellious mankind. Genesis ends with the choosing of a family through which that Savior would be sent to the world. Exodus picks up that history of God's plan to save fallen mankind. It demonstrates the detailed care God gave to that family. He repeatedly forgives, calls the family back into His kingdom, and continues nurtures them after they had rebelled against Him. In the history of the Israelites we can see our own history as God continues to offer His Grace to us even though we often demonstrate our disloyalty to Him. Tuesday evenings 7:00 to 9:00 - Nov. 4 to Dec. 16, Mr. Krause In the Community Room The Bible The A&E Network presented a ten episode series called “The Bible.” In that series, the history presented in the Bible has been broken into ten brief segments. There are five segments on the Old Testament and five segments on the New Testament. We will view these segments one at a time and discuss them as they relate to the Bible. We will notice the time span of history has been compressed. They did try to be true to the Word, but at times used some poetic license to move the history along.
