Otterville R-VI Receives Pre-School Expansion Grant

I am pleased to announce that on Thursday, September 25, the district received
official notice that we were awarded with a Pre-School expansion grant. The idea for
expanding the preschool grant came about when the Board of Education was considering putting the bond issue on the ballot. After listening to community concerns relating
to the proposed location, the Board of Education determined that the old gym locker
rooms would be a better location for any preschool expansion and directed administration to explore grants. The awarded grant will allow the district to add 10 additional
preschool students (age 3-4) starting no later than December 15, 2014. Additionally,
the grant will provide funding for a full time Pre-School para, naterials and supplies and
necessary renovations to bring the facility in compliance with health and safety regulations. We are very excited about the expansion of this program. If you are interested
in your child attending preschool, we encourage you to call the school @ 366-4391.

MOB: Making Otterville Better Award
The Otterville Board of Education recently created the Making Otterville
Better (MOB) award. The purpose of this award is to recognize students, staff as
well as community members who go above and beyond in Making Otterville Better. The first recipients of the award displayed an above and beyond pride, determination and unselfishness while transforming the school during the summer.
MOB members include: Kathy Thompson, Annette Meyer, Mary McIntyre, Carey
Nolting, Dallas Dieckman, William Schick, Gina Gaskell, Trevor Nolting and Traci
Schoen. The next recipient(s) will be chosen by this group with the only criteria
being that they must have gone above and beyong in Making Otterville Better.

Otterville to Enter
Kaysinger
Conference in 2015
The
2014-2015
school
year could be labeled as a year of
many changes at the Otterville R-VI
School. Not only have we been
busy with the many renovations
and changes in the building and
in our student information system,
but it will also bring changes in our
conference athletic and activity affiliation. The 2014-2015 school year
will be the last year Otterville will be
part of the Cooper County Athletic
Association. Beginning in 20152016, we have accepted an invitation into the Kaysinger Conference.
The Kaysinger Conference
is a much larger conference with
ten schools in the conference. Despite the larger size, the schools
are geographically located closer
to us than several of the schools in
the CCAA conference. Schools in
the conference include Northwest
(Hughesville, Houstonia), LaMonte,
Green Ridge, Windsor, Lincoln, Cole
Camp, Stover, Smithton, Tipton, and
Sacred Heart. The conference offers many of the same activities for
our students and adds opportunities which we currently don’t offer
through the CCAA. The Kaysinger
Conference includes junior high and
high school art, music, track, speech,
basketball, softball, baseball, science, golf contests and tournaments
for competition. Our kids will also
have opportunity for junior high and
high school vocal and band clinics,
and a new opportunity is the annual
Kaysinger Math and Spelling Bee
for students in grades 3 through 6.
Some of the Kaysinger Conference schools are considerably
larger than Otterville; however, we
have already been competing with
many of the schools in the confer-
ence. Many of our Otterville students have
extended families in the schools and communities in the Kaysinger Conference. The new
conference affiliation will offer our kids the
opportunity to meet more students from the
area and to show area schools the high quality of education Otterville students receive.

“Reading Under the Harvest Moon”
It’s hard to believe we are already
preparing for our annual Title I Reading
Night. This year’s theme is “Reading Under the Harvest Moon.” The event will be
held for students in preschool through fifth
grades on October 2 at 6:00 p.m. in the Otterville Elementary wing. We ask students
to report to the following classrooms: Preschool students in the preschool classroom,
kindergarten and first grade students in the
kindergarten classroom, second and third
grade students in the second grade classroom, and fourth and fifth grade students in
the fifth grade classroom. We are very fortunate to have such a helpful bunch of sixth
graders because they have volunteered
to assist in the classrooms. All students
who attend will take home a special treat.
We are excited to welcome guest
readers as they visit our classrooms to share
their love of reading with our students. There
are also several activities planned for the
event. Elementary teachers have organized
a craft that relates to the Reading Night
theme. The Otterville FFA Chapter will also
have various farm animals for students to view
and learn about as well as some tractors on
display. The animals and tractors will be located in the west parking lot. In addition, Mrs.
Weiss and her art students will be presenting
to their face painting talents. Furthermore,
you won’t want to miss the treats that will be
prepared by Mrs. Homan’s cooking classes.

Clipping Turns Into Cash!
Otterville Elementary continues to collect General Mills Box
Tops for Education. With each box
top turned in the school receives 10
cents. We are able to turn our box
tops in twice during the school year.
Our first turn in date is October, and
the second is February. With the
money we receive, we are able to
reimburse teachers for products for
special activities in their classrooms.
We were also able to pay a portion
of the movie Frozen last year at
Christmas time, and also rented a
bounce house for Fun Day. Please
continue to clip and send the box
tops in so we can continue to provide fun activities for our students.

News from the Nurse’s Office
The Cooper County Health
Department will be working with the
Otterville School to host an Open to
the Public Flu Shot Clinic. During
this time flu shots will be available to
Otterville residents as well as school
staff. More information will come at
a later date because there has not
yet been a date set for this since
the health department has not yet
received their flu vaccine supply for
this year. If you have questions, you
may call the health department at
660-882-2626, or you may phone the
school at 660-366-4621, ext. 406,
to speak with Christie Thierfelder.
A Look Into November
Otterville School will again
be hosting their annual Veteran’s
Day Celebration on Tuesday, November 11. We would like to invite all veterans to come and enjoy
breakfast before the assembly and
encourage the community to come
and help recognize our veterans.

indergarten Happenings
The kindergarten class is
getting really excited about all that
they are learning this year. In math
students have learned their numbers
0-5, greater than, less than, and equal
to. They have also learned how to
compare their numbers and how to
show them in many different ways.
In language arts students have
been working on writing their
letters,
recognizing
their
letters out of order and learning
what sounds each letter makes.
In reading students have
been learning about friends, family, baby animals, and how everybody is different.
Students
have also been working on
reading 2-4 word sentences.
We are all looking forward to Reading Night which
is coming up on October 2nd.

Snippets from
1st Grade
We have read some very interesting stories in our reading book
so far. Along with that we have had
some great discussions about key
details in those stories. One of our
stories was about a boy that was
scared about his first day of school,
and we talked about our first days
of school. We charted our thoughts
about our first days, and then with
a partner wrote a small story about
our memories of our first days. Our
great stories our out in the hall by
our room with our illustrations. We
hope if you are in the building you
will stop and take a look. We look
forward to creating more stories!
5th
We already have a month
of school under our belts here in fifth
grade. In mathematics we are currently
learning the distributive property. I anticipated this being a challenge for my students; however, they were able to master
it relatively quickly. We will now move on
to review multiplying by single and double
digit numbers. We have started a very
exciting chapter in science as well. This
month we will be discussing reproduction
and the life cycles of plants and animals.
This is such a crucial part of our learning
experience. Students get to explore and
understand what makes each of us look
the way we do! In reading we are covering expository text and technical text while
discussing the positives and negatives of
new technology. Social Studies will be focused on the Spaniards reaching America
all the way back to the 1400’s. Thank you
for tuning into what’s going on in our room!
5th Grade, Travis Goosen
6th
With the month of September, threequarters of the way over, we are finding
ourselves working with fractions in math.
We are learning how to convert between
fractions, decimals and percent. In reading we have been finding the main idea of
narrative non-fiction. This week we read a
story about a volcano called “Into the Volcano” by Donna O’Meary. This story took
us on an inside tour of a dormant volcano
as we tried to answer the question “How do
natural forces shape the Earth?” Although
this sounds like science, we are actually
exploring chemical reactions and chemical
properties during science time. We are having a great time in the 6th grade classroom.
6th Grade, Mrs. Hollomon
K-12 ART
I am happy to report this is an exciting year for our art students. Every student in
each grade level from 1st to 12th have sketchbooks to use in the art room. My goal with introducing sketchbooks into the art curriculum
is to encourage creative artistic skills by preplanning projects, concepts and ideas. I also
use sketchbooks as an artistic literacy tool to
improve vocabulary. In the course of the last
year, I have also introduced the concept of
critiquing one’s art work during and
at the end of projects for positive as
well as constructive feedback. By
introducing peer feedback in art,
students value each other’s creative
opinions, instead of just relying on
my approval. In the past month we
have reviewed color theory and will
continue to increase our knowledge
of other elements and principles of
art and design. I also try my best to
recognize that each student comes
to the art room with different skills
and ability levels by personalizing
each project to their individual interests and creative needs. My high
school art classes are learning how
to enlarge a picture into a drawing
by using a grid system. The elementary art classes are continuing
to master creative procedures and
use their sketchbooks as a form of
personal expression. In the course
of the next few months, our high
school students will be working towards getting art work prepared for
our district level art show in March.

Jr High Scholar Bowl
Calling all Jr. High students!
Do you enjoy trivia and challenging
your brain? Do you want to have fun
and show off your knowledge in a particular subject? Who likes snacks?
It’s time to think about joining Scholar Bowl this year! We
compete against other schools in a
game-show setting of trivia showdown! Things like math, sports,
literature, geography, history, and
science, as well as a “potpourri”
category could be the subject of
the next question. Students must
buzz in fast to give their answers.
If this sounds like fun to
you, or if you are not sure and just
want to check it out before joining,
see Mrs. Pudil today. We began
lunch practices on September 24th.

PUERTO RICO
Here We Come!
Come explore the “Island of
Natural Wonders” with us in June of
2016! Mrs. Pudil is leading a travel
group of students and adults on an
Explore America tour. Some of the
highlights of this 7-day excursion will
include snorkeling, a rainforest tour,
Camuy Cavern tour, a night viewing
of Phosphorescent Bay, a salsa lesson, a cooking class, and several
historical tours. EA tours include
travel insurance, a 24-7 tour guide
dedicated to our group, and so much
more. Come to the first informational meeting to get your questions answered on October 8, at 6 pm in Mrs.
Pudil’s room. There is a discount
advantage if you sign up before
Sept 30th, but there will be a second
meeting on Oct 8, 6pm, if you cannot
make the first meeting. If you need

plants can be used to form artistic and colorful landscapes, though it is important to
monitor the growing needs of each of these
plants to maintain their health. We also were
able to observe a Weather Sensor Systems
station. The station is used to provide accurate local weather in real-time. During
lunch we were able to taste-test “Honey Ice
Cream”, which happened to be another FFA
member’s local SAE project. One of the last
stations we attended was the MU College of
Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources or
CAFNR station. There we were taught about
what to look for in a college and how we
might be able to pay for tuition with help from
scholarships and college programs. They
quizzed us on a few things, and those who
answered questions correctly received water
bottles. There were several other stations
and workshops at the Field Day, but my personal favorite workshop belonged to Lincoln
University. They had brought two baby goats
(Clara and Harley) and a donkey (Jayhoo)
from the college’s farm in Jefferson City.
Overall, the Otterville FFA chapter members’
knowledge grew by attending the Bradford
Farms Field Day. The bus ride home was
filled with positive reactions for the day.

FFA Attends Bradford Farms
On September 16th, 2014, the Otterville FFA Chapter members along
with Advisor, Mr. Dallas Dieckman,
and Bus Driver, Mrs. Jill Campbell,
attended the MU Bradford Research
Farms Field day. We attended many
educational workshops. First, we
went to the beef workshop, and
each member got the opportunity
to feel inside the omasum of a cow.
Then we went to the beneficial insect workshop, where we learned
that the Green Clover worm, which
feeds on soybean leaves actually
helps the crop more than hurts it by
keeping even more harmful pests
out of the field. At the Ornamentals
workshop, we were taught about
many different plants that are pigmented with different colors. These
National FFA Officer
visits Otterville
On September 11th, 2014, the Otterville FFA Chapter was blessed with a
visit from the National FFA Organization.
Southern Region Vice President, Jackson Harris from Alabama, came to our little
town of Otterville, MO, to meet the
32 members of our strong chapter.
He encouraged the students to be
involved, showcasing the many opportunities that membership within
the FFA can offer. Being active and
participating in those opportunities,
he said, would provide support and
open several doors for each student
whether they pursued being a part
of the winning Livestock Evaluation
team, had the 1st place extemporaneous speech at the Central District
Leadership Development Events,
or met their best friend at the State
FFA Camp. The FFA was formed
by students long ago to provide
educational opportunities in agriculture. The students were proud to
share their goals to be recognized
for their agricultural pursuits in contests, chorus, Supervised Agricultural Experience programs, and more.
Later that night, three members of the Otterville FFA Officer
Team: Rachel Hogan, Terri Morris,
and Macheznie Aggeler, followed
Vice President Harris to California, MO, where he was the guest
speaker for the Area VIII Leadership
Conference
and
Officer
Training.
At the Conference,
the three officers
met with different
groups to learn
new
leadership
techniques, reach
out to neighboring
FFA chapters, and
build upon their
own potential to
be good officers.

were: Missouri State FFA Vice
President Libby Martin, Sietz Fundraising, University of Missouri
Agricultural Education, Dr. Norman Rohrbach, and FCS Financial.

MBEA Presenters
On July 21-22, Adviser Cindy Birdwell and Students, Nick Vang and Stephanie Oswald, presented at the 2014 Annual Summer Conference in Springfield, MO,
along with VariQuest presenter, Lea Taylor. The Otterville School received a grant
in 2013 to purchase equipment form the VariQuest Company which was used to
create posters, school magnetics and vinyl stickers to sell to the community.
FBLA Membership Drive Night
The Otterville FBLA members had a kickball tournament membership drive on August 27th, at the Otterville School Baseball Diamond. The
kids were invited to a night of snacks, drinks, and a fun competition between friends. The entire high school was invited, and we recruited some
new members. Everyone stayed for a meeting regarding our future projects in FBLA. It was a fun night, and we cannot wait until our next meeting.

very grateful to receive our donation of approximately two large
(2’x2’) boxes of aluminum tabs
last May, and there is a thank you
note posted outside Mrs. Pudil’s
classroom door for all to read.
Thank you, Otterville community,
for your efforts in this good work.
Once again this year, we will
be collecting aluminum tabs—these
are tabs from drink cans as well as
food cans that have pop tabs on them
to support the Ronald McDonald
House charity. There will be collection spots at various locations around
the building, including the office, the
nurse’s office, the lunchroom, and
some classrooms. If you have a
large amount of tabs, bring them in
a plastic bag to Mrs. Pudil’s room.

the shelves. The classes will compete by
grades PreK-3, 4-6, & 7-12 to win an ice
cream treat.
A barrel will be placed inside of B & L Market for anyone to contribute also.
Senior Class News
The seniors are working
with Mrs. Alexander on scholarship
opportunities and ACT test date registration. Each member of the class
is looking into what area can they
further their education for the career
choice of their choosing. Monday,
September 22, the seniors met with Jostens
representative Jim Glennon to pick out class
graduation announcements. On Thursday,
October 2, the order will go in. The senior
class met, and a few decisions have been
made: Class colors are royal blue, silver,
and coral. Graduation date is May 9 at 5
pm. The senior year is moving along quite
quickly. The class has worked several concession stands at the start of school and
will have only one big fundraiser. The first
home varsity basketball game is Nov. 25
with the class preparing a chili/soup supper. Please keep this date on your calendar.

classes, English I through IV, are
now reading various novels. English
I is tackling The Red Badge of Courage; English II is enjoying Fever
1793; English III has begun To Kill a
Mockingbird; and English IV is reading several novels by Todd Strasser including If I Grow Up and Boot
Camp. Looking ahead, our juniors
have an opportunity to participate
in an essay contest sponsored by
CoMo Electric. Thus, our English III
class will be pursuing essay writing
in the next several weeks, possibly
taking a break from our novel. The
focus of our classes is to continually
enhance and promote reading and
literacy, as well as communicate our
thoughts effectively through writing.
The students have been making
great strides in achieving this goal!
Community Service Project
FBLA participated with the Helmig
family to help create the 7th annual Jake
Helmig ATV Ride. We Helped with set up
and tear down. We did the concessions and
also helped with the breakfast. We would
like to thank the Helmig Family for letting us help with the ride and for letting us
use this as are community service report.

High School English
It is hard to believe that it is already mid-term of first quarter! The English
classes at Otterville High School have been
working hard and have accomplished much
in the first weeks of school. The upper level
English classes, English III and English IV,
completed written article reviews which incorporated sound paper organization, attention-getting introductions, and summarizing
conclusions. The creative writing class has
had fun with various writing prompts and has
entered several online writing contests. A
highlight for our creative writers was listening to Brad Paisley’s song, “Letter to Me,” as
inspiration for writing a letter to themselves

Board of Education Member Spotlight
Rosemary Denese Brand is a newly elected board
member. She has been a resident of Otterville for over thirtyeight years. Her son, Kevin Dennis Brand, graduated from
Otterville High School in 1990. Three of her grandchildren are
currently attending Otterville Elementary School. She graduated from the University of Central Missouri in December
1998 with a Master of Science Degree in Education. She retired from teaching in 2012 after twenty-seven years. She is
now sitting, rocking and rolling, with her youngest grandson.
Mrs. Brand’s hobbies are writing, editing, publishing, traveling, and bowling. She is currently writing a
book, her first book, Walking in the Rain. After her husband, Dennis William Brand, died in 2008, she found
when storms arise, one must learn to walk in the rain.
Mrs. Brand has seen the other board members
working with diligence and perseverance (late hours).
She is proud to be part of their excellence and is striving
to maintain their high quality of education for the Otterville students while supporting the staff and encouraging the community to participate in their performance.
Business Grant
With all the construction going on around school I
want to report on the new grant equipment received in the
Business Classroom. For the 2014-2015 school year Mrs.
Birdwell wrote a $24,000 Enhancement Grant. What is
asked for is not what is always granted. Our award consists of: 8 new classroom speciality ??? (Which is desks
(2 per unit) and chairs), 16 computers with dual monitors,
and 1 laptop. The Enhancement Grant has the district paying for only 25% of the cost with the state picking up 75%
of the costs. The existing equipment has been placed in
other classrooms within the building. At this time the desks
have not arrived, and we are anxious to receive them.

School Board Minutes
The Otterville Board of Education met in Regular Session on August 13, 2014, at 7:00 pm.
Before the regular monthly meeting a tax rate hearing was held to set the tax rate for 2014. The proposed tax rate per
$100 valuation is $3.8319 on the Operating Fund and $0.06700 on the Debt Service Fund. The tax rate was approved with a
motion by Mark Blankenship and seconded by Heather Lynn.
Monthly bills in the amount of $241,242.28 were presented and approved for payment.
Gabriel Hinshaw was the guest at the meeting.
The board voted on the following:
1) Approved to change the monthly meeting to the third Wednesday of each month.
2) Approved the Athletic/Activity handbook.
3) Approved the 2013-2014 Annual Secretary of the Board Report.

Mrs. Oelrichs gave the principal’s report which included an update on the Athletic/Activity handbook, number of participants
for baseball and volleyball and scheduling a meet the player’s night.
Mr. Unger gave a Superintendent’s report which included the update on the construction projects, the opening of the
preschool grant, discussed the 2014-2015 budget, discussed the Annual Performance Report and discussed Policy 1432.
With no further business, the meeting adjourned and will meet again on September 17, 2014 at 6:30 pm.
The Otterville Board of Education met in Regular Session on September 17, 2014 at 6:30 pm.
Monthly bills in the amount of $476,416.99 were presented and approved for payment.
Guests present at the meeting were Gabriel Hinshaw, Cindy Birdwell, Kathy Pudil, Garret Lynn and Nicholas Vang.
The board voted on the following:
1. Approve the Philospohy/Mission/Goals statements.
2. Accepted the Student Assessment Report.
3. Accepted the Annual Performance Report.
4. Approved the MSBA opposing Amendment 3 Resolution.
5. Approved the trip request of FBLA to Minnesota.
6. Approved the construction change orders and offered a contract to Goetz Brothers for flooring.
Mrs. Oelrichs gave the Principal’s report which included four FBLA students attending the

conference in St. Charles, October 17 & 18, that the parent portal with Teacher Ease is now available and information on the
MAP and EOC test scores.
Mr. Unger gave a Superintendent’s report which included the update on the gym/weight room renovations, update on
the Pre-School grant, discussed Policy 1432 regarding a School Protection Officer, information on the bus fleet and discussion
on lease/purchasing of new buses. Also, he gave an update on the budget and gave information of salary comparison of other
districts.

Recycle Otterville!
We are continuing the recycle program here at Otterville School
again this year. In the building, all
teachers and other staff are encouraged to keep a recycle bin in their
rooms, a dedicated box or collection
container, which is emptied every
Friday afternoon to the outdoor bins.
A special thanks to Mrs. Beuscher
for coordinating those students responsible for the in-building pickup
each week. Both paper/cardboard
items as well as glass or plastic
bottles (soda or juice bottles) can
be collected in the classroom bins.

from pickles, pasta sauce, or mayonnaise,

The community is encouraged to use the recycle bins behind the school as well. Please do
not send recycling with your children, however. Instead, drop your
recyclable items off after school
hours by driving through the back
by the baseball field and putting
items into the appropriate bins for
whichever type of recycled item.
There are two different
kinds of recycling we do here,
thanks to Boonslick Industries in
Boonville, who pick up our collections once a week. There are
both Paper/cardboard and Containers recycle bins.

and Glenn Homan represented the Ottrville
FBLA Chapter, District 6, and the State of
Missouri at Nationals this summer held in
Nashville, TN June 29 through July 2 articipants from across the United States
and two countries were in attendance for
this exciting conference to sharpen their
core business skills, expand their networks
and participate in more than 60 business
and business related competitive events.
Haley’s competition was in Public Serice Announcement. She prepared
a commercial and a speech with a presentation. Members attended with Haley
was Hannah Benny, Stephanie Oswald,
Morgan Steck, and Mrs. Birdwell. Several
activities were enjoyed by all to include:
Nashville Hall of Fame, Lovelass Cafe,
Superman’s home town and museum, Geneeral Jackson’s Riberboat Cruise, Grand
Ole Opry, sightseeing, and shopping.
