Course details
TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is a rapidly growing international industry with a high
global demand for qualified English teachers. More and more people around the world need to or want to learn
English, either for work or study, for migration, or just for interest.
The Graduate Certificate of TESOL is a high-level post-graduate qualification, positioned between a Bachelor's
Degree and a Master's Degree. This course will help you develop the essential skills and knowledge for use in a
future career within the TESOL industry both in Australia and overseas.
You will learn the latest teaching strategies and methodology for teaching English, how to analyse the grammar
and other key components of English, and how to assess the language proficiency of second language learners.
Importantly, you will learn how to apply this knowledge in structured teaching practice with classes of English
language students, where you will teach individual lessons and integrated sequences of lessons, known as units of
work.
The combination of academic research (at a Graduate Certificate level) and extremely practical workplace
application makes this qualification ideal for those wishing to join the modern TESOL industry. No prior teaching or
language learning experience is required.
Upon successful completion of the program you will be able to teach English language courses across a range of
sectors including:

English language courses offered within the ELICOS sector
Study tour courses
Department of Education, Science and Technology (DEST) funded courses e.g. Skill for Education
and Employment (SEE)
AMEP as funded by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship
English language component of Workplace English Language and Literacy (WELL) program
Queensland Government funded courses.
(NB: Registered Training Organisations in the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector may require
additional qualifications such as TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.)
Overseas
English language colleges for adults
high schools and primary schools (provided you have the necessary country-specific teaching qualifications or
registration)
private lessons and small group lessons.
(NB: Other qualifications may be necessary in other countries in certain TESOL contexts)
In Australia, accepted TESOL qualifications are defined by NEAS (National English Language Training
Accreditation Scheme - http://www.neas.org.au/home/ ) for the following two sectors:
ELICOS (English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students)
AMEP (Adult Migrant English Program)

Entry requirements
You may enrol in 39296QLD Graduate Certificate in TESOL if you have the following:
a Bachelor Degree (any discipline), three-year diploma or other equivalent higher education qualification; or
not less than three years full-time vocational TESOL experience (or equivalent) without a recognised higher
education qualification;and
for learners from a non-English speaking background: IELTS 6.5 with no score under 6 / ISLPR two skills at 3
and two at 3+ (or equivalent) as a minimum.
