Know… Grow… Show…Christ Into the Word… Sermon Series: The E100 Challenge Sermon: Law And Land Is A Gift Exodus 20:1-20 Introduction: • Being double-minded leads to disaster. Context: • Two million strong, the Israelites were delivered from Egypt. • God fulfills His promises. 1) The Gift Of Law • The great “I Am” who brought them out of Egypt instructs how His people should live. • We are blessed, not because of our capacities, but because we are His. • We are His with a purpose – for His mission, not for ourselves. • Law is not the source of rightness, but the course of right ness. • 10 Commandments tells us how to relate to God, others and stuff. 2) The Gift of Land • God gives the promised land, with echoes of the Exodus. • The narrative plainly tells, it is God who provides, not His people’s capacities. • Yet, God’s people corrupt their worship of God with idolatry. Application: • God calls us to singular, whole-hearted devotion. • Marriage doesn’t work as a three-some. God is jealous for our sakes. • See Psalm 119: 113. Many of us live as double-minded people. We love God… but also love the world; love being in control. • God calls us to a better way: See James 4:8. Conclusion: • God gives good gifts for our benefit, so we can benefit His mission. • Perhaps today, it’s time to give up our double-minded ways. …So the Word can get into you! Community Breakfast Our first community breakfast for the new season was held on Saturday morning, October 4th. We are pleased to report that the proceeds enabled us to make a contribution to the church’s ministries in the amount of approx. $900. Through it we share in the death and resurrection of Christ and are commissioned to his service. In Baptism, water is administered in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. The water signifies the washing away of sin, the start of new life in Christ, and the gift of the Holy Spirit. By the power of the Holy Spirit God acts through Baptism. It is the sacrament not of what we do but of what God has done for us in Christ. God's grace and our response to it are not tied to the moment of Baptism, but continue and deepen throughout life. It is a sacrament meant for those who profess their faith and for their children. Together we are the family of God. Baptism is also an act of discipleship that requires commitment and looks towards growth in Christ. Those baptized in infancy are called in later years to make personal profession of Christ. What is born may die. What is grafted may wither. Congregations and those baptized must strive to nurture life in Christ. Baptism assures us that we belong to God. In life and in death our greatest comfort is that we belong to our faithful Saviour Jesus Christ.
