Executive Summary
Young Inventors Challenge 2015 is an ‘inventive’ competition organised by Association
of Science, Technology and Innovation (ASTI) annually since 2013. We have held this
event for the 3 years consecutively. The Young Inventors Challenge (YIC) is one of ASTI’s
projects to promote science, technology and innovation among secondary school
students. This year’s theme is Inventions to Help a Million: To Make the World a Better
Place.
YIC 2015 was publicized by sending out flyers, follow-up phone calls, publicity through
“word of mouth” and an interview with one of the local radio stations. We have received
a total of 191 teams application of which 63 teams were shortlisted based on their
proposal. The shortlisted teams were given training prior to the event.
A total 52 teams participated in the grand finale. Prizes were given out in 4 categories,
namely Overall YIC Champion, Video Log Competition, Project Paper Writing Competition
and ASTI – YIM Inclusive Innovation Award 2015. Additionally, for the Overall YIC 2015
Champion winning team, Sunway agreed to pay them a bursary of RM100,000 for their
Pre-university or A-Levels studies.
A number of 40 judges have agreed to assist and 25 judges attended the Judges
Training before the final event. The judging team for YIC 2015 was headed by Dr. Ewe
Chun Te.
In conclusion, YIC 2015 was a success with more schools showing an interest in YIC and
it can be seen in the increased number of applications that we have received in 2015.
The students came with various inventions and were excited to participate in the YIC
2015 Grand Finale.

Introduction
The Association of Science, Technology and Innovation (ASTI) is a non-governmental organization
(NGO) working towards empowering young children through various projects such as Science
Fair for Young Children (SFYC), Young Inventors Challenge (YIC), and Creative and Critical
Thinking Camp (CCTC).
Science Fair for Young Children (SFYC) is a project designed for primary school students,
and about 200,000 participants have taken part in this initiative at the school, regional and
national levels. As a follow up to the SFYC, a competition at a more advanced level for the
secondary school was proposed in the form of the Young Inventors Challenge (YIC). It requires
teams of up to 5 members each to put their minds together and come up with an invention. This
kicks started with the theme “GREEN INVENTIONS: IDEAS ON SUSTAINABILITY”. A total of 12 teams
from all over the country participated in this pilot project, showcasing their green inventions.
In 2014, the Young Inventors Challenge competition was open once again to secondary
school students aged 13 to 17 years old and we encouraged the teams to be in groups of
3-5 students of different races to come together in an inventive process. The purpose of the
programme is to encourage the creative and inventive capability of young people. The theme
for YIC 2014 was kept the same; GREEN INVENTIONS: IDEAS ON SUSTAINABILITY.
In 2015, we planned to expand the challenge with the Theme Inventions to Help a Million: To
Make the World a Better Place”.
After the initial publicity and acceptance of statement of interest from teams, the students were
given the proposal writing manual to assist them to write a proposal.
The project was then implemented in 3 phases comprising of:
Phase One: The student’s proposal submission, 145 proposals with various teams were received
and 63 teams were shortlisted to participate in the Grand Finale.
Phase Two: Workshop session for selected participants and their mentors. The shortlisted teams
were given training in 7 locations across the country, which took part in Penang, Johor, Kelantan,
Terengganu, KL& Selangor, Sabah and Sarawak.
Phase Three: Final Competition. The final competition held in Sunway University on 19 September
2015. All together 52 teams from all over the country took part in the Grand Finale.

b. Event Promotion
•
The Traxx FM interview was attended by Dr.Mohamed Yunus Yasin and Mr.Faizal Noor Batcha.
c. Participants Application
•
•
•
•
•
Interested students were requested to form a team of 3-5 people.
Each team is required to have at least one Mentor, and submit their application to ASTI.
As of 2nd March 2015, ASTI had received a total of 191 applications.
Once the applications were received, the teams were emailed with the Students Manual as
a guideline for them to prepare the Invention proposals. They were given 15 days to submit
their proposals.

e. The Judging Process: Proposal Marking and Shortlisting
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Each proposal was reviewed by three different judges.
The judges were emailed with the proposals along together with the marking spreadsheet
and marking guideline.
There were a total of 30 judges from across the nation who volunteered their time. They
were experts from academia and industry.
Each result was cross-referenced.
The judges had a tough time screening through the proposals three times before finalizing
the qualifying teams.
There was also a final judging review meeting held at ASTI’s office on 25th April 2015 to
finalize the shortlisted teams. A total of 7 judges attended this meeting.
The judges decided to set a cut-off mark of 50% for the final teams to be selected.
63 best proposals were shortlisted according to the 50% criteria, and the shortlisted
teams were notified via email on 28th of April 2015.

Judging
11.1
Judges Selection
An invitation was sent to all the judges who participated in Young Inventors Challenge 2013
& 2014 and National Science Fair for Young Children 2014 through e-mail. In response to the
e-mail sent, a total of 50 judges agreed to get involve of and contribute as a judge for Young
Inventors Challenge 2015 Grand Finale. The judging team works independently from the working
group committee.
11.2
Judges Training
A Judges Training was conducted on 5th September 2015 at Sunway University, courtesy of
Sunway. A total of 19 judges attended this training session before the Grand finale. The judges
were given a small introduction about ASTI and YIC by Dr. Ewe Chun Te, Chief Judge I upon their
arrival. Dr. Ewe Chun Te then presented the Judging Score Sheet and had a discussion with all
who attended. The purpose of this session is to develop a common understanding amongst all
the judges as to what constitutes an invention judging score sheet, so that judging would be
carried out uniformly.
Mr. Faizal Noor Batcha, Chief Judge II, later conducted an exercise on report marking and all the
54 reports were marked by all the judges who attended the training. After marking the reports,
the judging panel also brainstormed on the sets of questions to ask the participants. Next, Ms.
Vanitha Vasu briefed the judges on event logistics. The training session concluded with Q&A
session before a networking lunch.

Event Day Judging
In the morning, judges started arriving at 7:30 for briefing at 8am. That morning we had
40 judges who turned for the event, and 3 more judges for the Core Judging Panel. The
judges divided into 10 judging groups in total, each judge group were made up of 2
judges and 2 cross-judges.
Briefing was given to the judges until 8:45am. The judges were reminded not to give
suggestions to project teams as it will influence the next cross judging process. Shortly
after the opening ceremony, the judging process officially started and the judges were
visiting the Student Project Teams booths and scored the inventions based on the
Judging Score Sheet. The main judging process started at 9:30 and ended at 11:30 as
planned.
The time keeping was centralised by the announcement from the EMCEE. Ushers guided
the judges at each time interval of 20 minutes. The moderating Panel of Judges (the Chief
Judge 1 & 2, and an independent judge) visited all the projects unofficially. Each Project
Team was given 10 mins to present, and another 5-8 mins for Q&A by the judges.
Judges then went to the judge’s room and the judging groups agreed on a score
(including the report marks) for each project team. At 12:45 pm, the scores were tabulated
and ranked. The top 15 projects were then moderated by the Panel of Judges. At 1:00
pm, the Core Judging Panel visited the top 5 projects and verified the top 3 prize
winning teams by 2pm.

Judges Observations
and Recommendations
Proposals & Projects:
o Found that theme was occasionally not
present, mainly the rural schools.
oStudents do not understand the
difference between proposal and report
o Improve on the originality; learn to do
background research and critique other
similar approaches
Project Teams Training:
o Stronger guidelines about YIC and ASTI,
e.g. in videos
o Upon receiving the projects proposals
from the students, judges can have a
session with the mentors to advice
o Mentors should provide or ignite brilliant
ideas to participants
oFind ways to connect with relevant
experts
Venue & Parking:
oHave a clear signage that tells you
where the venue is
o Reduce the volume of background music.
Difficult to hear the students
o Some reimbursement for the judges would
be good, e.g. parking fee
Judging Score Sheet:
o Elaborate judging criteria, e.g. a detailed
rubric as Judging Scoring Sheet
o
Include the element of Research
Methodology
o Incorporate the team background (level
of students and school capacity) into
scoring system
Judging Process
o Need to normalise the scores between
strict and lenient judges
Maybe have the teams’ judge more
projects
More judges should attend the judges
training
o Send information earlier to respective
judges
o Have a specific time slot for judges to
go back and suggest improvement
*
*
Other
oStudents from school who are not
participating should come and learn
from the other contestants.
o Should have more participants from rural
schools
Theme for YIC 2016 suggested by
Judges:
oHealthcare
o Solve meaningful problem
o Green materials/invention
oHelping the disable/special people.
Inventing aids or robots that could help
the disables/special people.

REPORT |52
Conclusion
YIC 2015 was a huge success. We had attracted some multiracial teams from various parts of
Malaysia although more improvement needed here. We had received 145 proposals but only
63 teams were selected. From the 63 teams selected, 52 teams participated in the Grand Finale
after 2 teams had pulled out of the last moment.
Our survey shows great female participation and a high satisfactory level of all of our
stakeholders. We believe that this program can be a platform for young creative and inventive
students to showcase their talent and possibly build their career in this area.
