Vital Education Enterprise & Training Limited (Vital EET) have
awarded Lorna Jackson an Achievement Award
Lorna Jackson was honoured with an
achievement award at an event
celebrating Black History Month, held at
Maryland Primary school. The event
was organised by the group Vital EET
and featured a range of speakers,
including Dr Mark Richards, physics
lecturer at Imperial College London and
Cllr Terry Paul, Newham Mayoral
adviser on skills and adult learning.
Lorna stated that “there were some
inspirational speakers at the event who
spoke about the role of parents,
motivation, resilience and having a
strong foundation” when dealing with
racism.
Lorna has taught children for 35 years
and was one of the first black
Headteachers in Newham. She also
started the Newham African Caribbean
Teachers’ Association, in order to help
fight racism.

Update
Passing of NPW Board Director
NPW were sorry to hear last week that
Ian Richardson, one of our board
directors has passed away. Ian served
as a director from January 2011
representing school governors. As a
relatively new company, Ian’s
governance expertise was invaluable as
we sought to establish ourselves. He
played a vital role in the recent
leadership transition of the company
and we had come to rely on his advice
and, more importantly, his wisdom.
In passing on the sad news, colleagues
have invariably referred to Ian’s charm
and they remember him as a gentleman. Both as a company director and a
school governor Ian worked tirelessly
for the benefit of Newham’s young
people. His contribution and commitment will be greatly missed.
NPW User Group Meeting
The NPW User Group meeting is
scheduled for the 25th November,
from 4pm – 5pm at Francis House. The
group meets once a term to discuss a
range of issues regarding NPW's
services and it has already given us a
range of suggestions that we have
acted upon.
Ray, 53, donated his kidney to Alya
Ahmed Ali, 13, in a selfless act in which
he saved the teenager’s life.
The User Group has openings for
additional Head Teachers, Deputy
Heads and School Business Managers/
Bursar membership. If you are
interested in joining the group please

Model School Status
Vicarage Primary School has been appointed as a Read Write Inc. Model School
Vicarage Primary School has just been appointed as a Read
Write Inc. (RWI) Model School as a result of their excellent
practice of reading and writing teaching using RWI Phonics
and Literacy and Language.
Primary School has become a Read Write Inc. Model School.
It has been fantastic to see the school develop and flourish,
it’s great that other schools in the area can visit and see their
brilliant Read Write Inc. lessons in action.”
The 60 RWI UK Model Schools vary hugely in their
demographic and size. All have transformed their teaching by
implementing the whole school approach advocated in RWI
Phonics, a reading and writing programme created by Ruth
Miskin and published by Oxford University Press.
Vicarage Primary School are happy for teachers from local
schools to arrange to visit, observe lessons and ask questions
about their experience of the programme, including the
impact on results, behaviour and pupil engagement.

All Model Schools are keen for teachers from local schools to
observe their lessons to see first-hand the impact RWI has
had on results, behaviour and pupil engagement.

Model Schools are vital in our drive to help children in other

Inclusion Quality Mark Flagship School.
Essex Primary School receive Inclusion Quality Mark Flagship status
In June 2014 Essex Primary School renewed its Inclusion
Quality Mark award. The school was accredited with the
Inclusion Quality Mark (IQM) from June 2008 and has since
then developed its accreditation in order to apply for Flagship
status. The school has a shared philosophy of inclusion; its
belief is that first quality teaching should impact on all
children including SEN.
The school was successful in its application for Flagship
status which is the top award given by the IQM to schools
that have demonstrated that inclusion is sustained and
developed. The schools SENCO, Mrs Janet Price,
coordinated the evidence for the accreditation.
The schools assessor, Linda Carr, produced the report about
the school which said:
“The leadership team strives tirelessly to ensure that the
school continues to improve and to ensure that they identify
and cater for the needs of all pupils. Much of the provision is
exemplary. There is a dedicated and expert team of staff led
by an inspirational head teacher who are committed to
