Trans-Australia Airlines (TAA) and Ansett-ANA took delivery of their first Boeing 727 jets on the same day. Government-owned TAA promoted its Boeing as the “Whispering T-Jet” with new standards in comfort, safety and speed. The first TAA jet service left Melbourne for Sydney on November 2, 1964. By this time, Qantas was already flying its first Boeing 707 jets on overseas routes. Qantas and TAA (renamed Australian Airlines in 1986) merged in 1993 prior to full privatisation in 1995. Qantas flight attendants Michael James and Pearly Collier-Harris surprised Lauren Potter (who plays Becky Jackson) by bursting into song and soon had other passengers clapping along. They sang Vanessa Amorosi’s hit Absolutely Everybody, the theme song for this year’s e.motion21 Dance Spectacular, which Potter was in town to co-host. The volunteer organisation e.motion21 provides dance and fitness for children and young adults with Down syndrome, a cause close to the actress’ heart. “When I was young, I dreamed of being an actress, but loads of people told me I couldn’t,” Potter said. “I learned to ignore those people.” Australian Olympian Dawn Fraser flew with Qantas to Japan in October to celebrate the 5oth anniversary of the Tokyo Olympics, where she won the 100m freestyle gold medal for the third consecutive time, setting an Olympic record.
