The feast days of this weekend – All Saints and All Souls have the
themes of inspiration, treasured memories and acceptance in hope.
Inspiration from the lives of ordinary people who lived a life of
deep love of Jesus and whose living draws us forward in our
faltering steps as we too live as Jesus taught. Treasured memories
of those beloved people who have died and who were and remain
significant for us then and now. Finally both feastdays draw us to
recognise that we too are to face death. The acceptance of our
mortality steeped in hope is the gift of Jesus through His Death and
Resurrection. Our confidence is that of a child – trusting - and
drawing on the goodness and example of the lived experiences of
those who have gone before us.
The tradition of November – a time to remember and pray for and
with those who we lovingly remember - has a strong flavour of the
communal approach to death that is the Christian faith. Two
hundred years before Jesus lived and preached it was recorded in
Maccabees: It is a holy and a wholesome thought to pray for the
dead that they may be loosed from their sins. (2 Macc: 46). Our
responsibility to each other as Christians extends past the bounds
of mortal life. Part of my belief, too, would be that loved ones who
have died would also be my supporters as I complete this earthly
part of the journey.
A prayer I learnt as a child remains a treasured mantra:
Jesus, Mary and Joseph – I give you my heart and my soul.
Jesus, Mary and Joseph – be with me now and in my last
agony.
Jesus Mary, and Joseph - may I bring forth my soul in
peace with you. Amen
This month may we take the time to reflect on our loved departed
ones and pray with Jesus, Mary and Joseph for those who are our
companions in life.
