STEWARDSHIP CORNER
Sharing Time, Talent and Treasure
As we pray today for an increase of spiritual gifts, we
are reminded by the Bishops’ Pastoral Letter on
stewardship that good stewardship of the Church
“means cherishing and fostering the gifts of all, while
using one’s own gifts to serve the community of faith”.
The collection for November 1/2 = $14,958
The collection for last year at this time = $15,621
The Mass attendance for November 1/2 = 1,484
The number of envelopes used = 523
Weekly Envelopes
We request that all of our parishioners be registered. We
ask also that our parishioners use envelopes to support
Corpus Christi financially on a regular basis. If we see that
envelopes are not being used to support the parish
regularly, we contact the envelope company and the
envelopes are no longer sent through the US mail system
except at Christmas and Easter. Using envelopes
consistently is the best way for a parish to plan prudently
as far as the budget and expenses are concerned. You are
also able to support Corpus Christi electronically now. If
you are interested in this type of giving, please let us know.
A few parishioners choose to do this and our weekly
income through regular collections is a few hundred
dollars higher each week. Thank you!

Corpus Christi Church
Catholic writers of a classical orientation have attempted to
categorize advancement in the spiritual life according to different
ways. These are the unitive way, the illuminative way and the
purgative way. According to the last of the three ways, the
purgative way, the effort is to achieve purity of the soul by
disavowing sin. All of those things which constitute impediments
in the spiritual life, whatever draws us away from Christ, are
renounced in favor of living the life of grace right now on earth.
Purgation continues after death if it is necessary. It is carried out
in purgatory, naturally. It is best to understand purgatory not as a
place, but as a state of preparation for coming into the presence
of God and dwelling in it for all eternity. We are made ready in
purgatory to inherit what the Lord has promised to those who
have been faithful to His commandments during their earthly
pilgrimage. Put another way, by God’s mercy, those in purgatory
have been judged fit to share in the heavenly banquet but some
imperfections remain before the blessed vision of God can be
had.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church says that from the
beginning the Church has honored the memory of the dead and
offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eucharistic
sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision
of God. (1032) We witness to this history with the All Souls
Novena here at Corpus Christi Church. We recall too that our
prayer for the deceased at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is not
restricted to All Souls or even the month of November. At any
time, we may arrange to have Mass offered for the dead,
believing that we can still assist the faithfully departed even
though we no longer see them in the flesh. Thankfully, we have
the flesh of Christ in the Eucharist and His assurance that anyone
who eats His flesh will live forever. (cf. Jn 6:54,58) The Holy
Eucharist is the bridge uniting heaven and earth. Let us not
hesitate to help those who have gone from the earth to get to
their heavenly home.
Not only do we honor the dead but we also honor the living. Let
my column this weekend serve as an invitation to join us on
Sunday, November 23rd as we honor Anne Gallagher and Pat
Gavin for their service to our parish. Both of these women have
served in leadership positions in sodalities which have had a long
history here at Corpus Christi. Anne is the President of the
Rosary Altar Society and Pat is the Regent of Court Immaculata
(#444) of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. The reception
on the 23rd of November is in Fitzgerald Hall and it begins at
4:00 PM.
As you can tell from the calendar, that fourth Sunday of
November (23rd) is the Sunday before Thanksgiving. Since so
many people travel for the holiday, you may want to see the
reception also as an opportunity to exchange greetings with your
neighbors and fellow parishioners. We have much to be thankful
for, including the communal life and the association of the
faithful. We really build up the Body of Christ just in being
together. So join us.
And don’t forget the drawing in the annual autumn fundraiser is
in Fitzgerald Hall on Sunday, November 23rd. The top prize is
$3,000.00. Take a chance – you never know!

Pastor

Bulletin Announcements
In observance of Veterans’ Day on Tuesday, November 11th, the
rectory office will be closed during the day and at night. It will
re-open on Wednesday, November 12th at 9:00 AM. As with
other civil observances, there is a single morning Mass on
Tuesday, November 11th. The Mass is at 9:00 AM. There is no
7:30 AM Mass on Veterans’ Day.
We thank those who purchased raffles last weekend for our
annual autumn fundraiser. We are appreciative of your
generosity. We have two weeks remaining until our drawing and
there are tickets still left. Please consider buying a ticket at
$25.00. You can purchase one at the rectory during business
hours until Saturday, November 22nd.
For those who received the raffle tickets in the mail several
weeks ago, we encourage you to return your tickets with your
donations through the mail. We need everyone to do something
to help us get near our profit goal of $20,000.00 for this
fundraiser. Even if you cannot purchase all four tickets, please
help us with one or two.
Lectors and extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion who
did not attend the meeting on September 16th or the make-up
meeting on October 11th may stop by the rectory the night of
Wednesday, November 12th between 7:00 and 8:30 PM to see
Msgr. Batule. All who exercise these two liturgical ministries in
the parish and could not or did not attend the prior meetings must
be seen personally by the pastor.
On Sunday, November 23rd, we invite you to join us for a Holy
Hour in the church from 3:00 until 4:00 PM. The Blessed
Sacrament will be exposed for adoration and we will conclude
with Benediction. Kindly mark your calendars now and plan to
join us.
Anne Gallagher and Pat Gavin are being honored at a reception
in Fitzgerald Hall on Sunday, November 23 rd beginning at 4:00
PM. Anne is the long-time President of the Rosary Altar Society
and Pat is the long-time Regent of Court Immaculata of the
Catholic Daughters of the Americas. We ask the members of
both sodalities to join us as we honor Anne and Pat for their
service to Corpus Christi Parish.
We will resume our use of the series called Catholicism after
Easter next year. Watch the bulletin for details on how to
participate in this adult faith enrichment offering. It is likely that
we will have sessions during the day and at night to
accommodate those who would like to join.
Later on this month, we observe Thanksgiving, a national
holiday. On Thursday, November 27th, there will be a single
Mass in the morning at 9:00 AM. The choirs will sing and we
invite you to join us as we give thanks in the best way we know
how by celebrating the Holy Eucharist together.

Corpus Christi Church
This weekend, representatives of the Knights of Columbus will
be at Corpus Christi to recruit new members for Corpus Christi
Council. A Knight will speak briefly after the distribution of
Holy Communion inviting Catholic men who are 18 and older to
join the largest Catholic fraternal organization in the world. Just
last year, Corpus Christi Council marked 90 years in the Mineola
community.
In a matter of a few weeks, we will close out the season of
Ordinary Time with the Solemnity of Christ the King (November
23rd). The next Sunday after that (November 30 th), we begin our
Advent observance. As we come to the end of the liturgical year,
the Church invites us to reflect on last things. The second day of
this month (November 2nd) sets the tone for this reflection by
having us confront our own mortality and the reality of divine
judgment. We recall too that we belong to a communion and thus
we can pray for those who have already gone before us marked
with the sign of faith. Continue to remember deceased loved
ones – family members and friends – at the Holy Sacrifice of the
Mass that they might be purified of their imperfections and come
at last into the presence of the Lord Who died and rose for them.

Catholics for Religious Freedom
Preserving religious freedom for all
“Religious freedom, an essential requirement of the dignity
of every person, is a cornerstone of the structure of human
rights,” said Pope John Paul II (12/16/87)
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by
the U.N. in 1948 says, “Everyone has the right to freedom
of thought, conscience and religion.” But …religious
freedom is widely violated around the world. (NY Times,
2/16/14)
News to consider from CFFR:
Many persecuted Iraqi Christians and other minorities have
fled Iraq since 2009. San Diego County’s Iraqi population
- estimated at 70,000 people - has watched with dread the
slow and painful extinguishing of their people in the land
they occupied for almost 2,000 years. A Chaldean Catholic
leader in San Diego relayed a message received from a
man stuck in Iraq: “By the time you guys do everything
you’re doing, there will be no Christians left (in Iraq).
We’ll all be dead.” (utsandiego.com, 8/30/14)
A Chaldean Christian bishop said the refusal of Iraq’s
Christians to abandon their faith in the face of annihilation
is something that ought to open the eyes of those in the
West. “It looks like the end of the road for us,” said Fr.
Shabi. “But thank God, people’s faith is strong. They are
relying on God and the Virgin Mary.” (catholicsun.org,
8/25/14)
Please Pray:
O Most Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Mercy, at this
most critical time, we entrust the United States of America
- and Iraq - to your loving care. We beg you to reclaim
these lands for the glory of your Son. Look down with
mercy upon us and touch the hearts of our people. Open
our minds to the great worth of human life and to the
responsibilities that accompany human freedom.
Grant us the wisdom to proclaim that God’s law is the True
Source of our rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of
happiness. Amen

Dedicação da Basílica de Latrão
Corpus Christi Church
“Não sabeis que sois templo de Deus e que o
Espírito de Deus habita em vós? Se alguém
destrói o templo de Deus, Deus o destruirá.
Porque o templo de Deus é santo e vós sois
esse templo.” (I Coríntios 3, 16-17)
Ela continua a manter a presidência da comunidade.
