Top 10 Reasons Why We Love St. Leo’s
By Paula Olson with help from brother Bill Kerrigan
10. Perfect altar view. Pew jockeying just doesn’t happen at St. Leo’s. Several rows of chairs and pews in the front
make the church experience start off with accessibility and ease.
9. A Jesuit church. After Dad got back from World War II, he graduated from Loyola University and became a devote
Catholic. My oldest, Ken Tuckfield, graduated from Bellarmine Prep, implanting Jesuit loyalty for another generation.
Even Pope Francis knows Jesuits rule!
8. Lovely politics. Home of Father Bix and nuclear resistance, non-violent communications, equality of humans
regardless of who they love or what they suffer from. No harping about unborn babies, who should be excluded, or
premature dying.
7. Nice selection of ministry options. If you’re in the mood to help someone, St. Leo’s is the place for you. You
can help the homeless, the pets of the homeless, the hungry, the displaced, the newly released from prison, the
intellectually disabled, the elderly, the mentally ill and physically ill. You can donate money, make sandwiches,
knit prayer scarfs, give food, visit people or bring them to church. You can sing, sew, color, bring your crèches at
Christmas, arrange flowers, pass out the Eucharist and read.
6. L’Arche. Okay, I’m partial. I love L’Arche in so many ways. I am particularly grateful to the core members and
assistants who paved the acceptance of Bill so he can live a few moments of his lifelong dream of priesthood by
taking up his food offering wearing his makeshift “stole.”
5. St. Leo’s liturgies. We love the choir, the music, and the song selections, especially the ones Bill knows by heart.
Those are the times when he asks me, “Did I sing good?” We love the Gospel dances, the Food for the Journeys,
Blessing of the Animals, and a favorite, when the children and teens lead the liturgy. We’re a parish that can really
belt out a song or a welcome. No limp murmuring at St. Leo’s!
4. Feeling of belonging. There is nowhere else my family, including my holidays-only husband, Rob, feels so
accepted and part of a church family,. We love watching the other side of the church grow up and grow old. We
worry about whom we don’t see and cheer when they return.
3. Our priests, Father Steve and Father Jim. Even though Bill thinks Steve is a little short and Jim has a lot of gray
hair, they are wonderful spiritual leaders. Thank you for introducing me to Our Lady of Costco, poetry, the language
of the Gospel, and the wisdom and hope of sober priests. These men walk the talk.
2. Rich simplicity. I love our church building and its history, especially the baptismal font. The decorations are
colorful without being distracting. No gimmicks, no gilded gold. We are a home to praise God, to serve God, and to
serve each other.
1. The real presence of God. St. Leo is full of the breath and warmth of God, which I inhale greedily each time I enter
and fill myself with God’s peace, strength, and love. I walk out ready to live the Word.
If this is who we are with our current facilities, just think of the possibilities with our new building! Break open those
piggy banks and wallets and let’s blast through to 100% goal!

On Social Justice:
Tacoma City
Council to Hear
Paid Sick Leave
Bill—Make Your
Voice Count
On Tuesday, November 18th Tacoma City Council will have a
hearing on the proposed Paid Sick Leave Ordinance. This is an opportunity to give voice to this
social justice issue. Catholic Social Teaching tells
us that we have an obligation to ensure that laborers secure a reasonable wage for their labor and are
afforded a decent quality of life. This should include the option of having paid sick days afforded
to them within reason. To think that in this city,
and country, we still have not supplied workers
with this basic right is simply unjust and frankly
poor business practice. In one report in
www.boston.com it stated that currently, 90 percent of restaurant workers report not having paid
sick days, and 60% report having to work while
sick. Affording sick days to workers is the right
thing to do. The National Partnership for Women
and families reports that the 2012 Paid Sick Day
Ordinance passed in Seattle covers 450.000 workers and 70% of employers report no administrative
difficulties and no evidence that the law has a negative impact on the economy.
Let’s have Paid Sick Days for workers be the norm
in Tacoma. Make you support known and attend
the hearing at Tacoma City Hall Tuesday, Nov.
18th - 5:30 pm in the Council Chambers! For

Meetings continue in support of a Living Wage
(15-Tacoma Now)
The cost of living keeps rising and our wages are
stagnating. If minimum wage had kept up with
inflation, it would now be $22/hr. Corporate profits have never been higher. They can afford to pay
at least $15. The campaign needs your help to win
though. Big business will fight.

Devotion to the Our Lady of Guadalupe: Our Lady of
Guadalupe is a foundational image of the struggle of
those on society’s margins: struggling workers and indigenous who are seeking to have a real voice in society
and the work place. Our lady of Guadalupe was a faith
filled response to the oppressions inflicted on the marginalized of 16th century Mexican Society.
Our Lady of Guadalupe is the Patroness of the Americas. Her feast day is Friday, December 12th. She has
been the support and hope for many who have struggled
for just wages and better working conditions for farm
laborers. In our faith tradition (particularly our belief in
the Communion of the Saints) the intercession of Our
Lady has always been invoked in the struggle for land
reform world wide. Next month we celebrate her feast
day and we want to bring forth this rich faith tradition.
Help us in this celebration by sharing with us your faith
story and any struggles for justice and peace in which
Our Lady of Guadalupe has played an important part.

about what it takes and how to become licensed. Safe, loving homes are desperately needed
for children while their families gain the skills necessary to care for them. We are in most
