DEDICATION OF THE LATERAN BASILICA
GUEST COLUMNISTS - PHILIPPINE RELIEF EFFORT REPORT
Dear Fellow Parishioners,
This letter is an update on how your time, talent and treasure have helped those affected by Typhoon Yolanda. Typhoon Yolanda ravaged
a significant portion of the Philippines on November 8, 2013, leaving an aftermath simply unimaginable:
 More than 3.4 million families were affected in 44 provinces, 591 municipalities and 57 cities in the region of Caraga.
 More than 1.1 million homes were destroyed, leaving more than 4 million people homeless.
 The death toll is over 6,000, with more than 28,000 people injured, and over 1,700 people missing.
 Church properties have now become makeshift cemeteries. Father Alex visited one church where the front lawn is now the burial site for
more than 400 people.
In response to Typhoon Yolanda, St. Andrew’s Parish led an effort by 6 local parishes and community groups to help bring relief. A
committee was formed, comprised of people from the Filipino community, as well as Father Alex and the two of us. The committee
coordinated an effort that delivered 235 boxes of clothing, shoes, food, toiletries and other supplies to the region in January. In addition to
these boxes, we also shipped 13 cases of water and 254 cases of canned goods.
Many were generous with monetary donations, as we collected $39,855! Trying to be the best stewards possible with your donations, the
committee requested Father Alex personally tour the devastated areas and make connections with those in need while on vacation visiting
his family in the Philippines. After spending 3 days in the area and speaking with fellow priests, Father Alex was able to identify some key
areas where your donations could be used:
 We have committed $9,200 of your Filipino donations to replace the ceiling of the San Joaquin Parish church. There is a second phase
to their renovation efforts and we are waiting for an estimate before sending more funds.
 We recently sent $2,600 to Candahug Chapel located in Palo Leyte to help replace the floors and make other repairs to the chapel.
 We are waiting for estimates to repair a school located in Aklan and will send the required funds ASAP so the kids can get back to
school.
We thank and applaud you for all of your help; however, please know there is always more work to be done. We encourage you to get
involved and stay involved. There are many ministries that can use your time and talent. If you are not sure where to start, please contact
Fr. Alex or Fr. Rafael or our parish staff for suggestions.
Again, on behalf of the committee and the many Filipinos you have helped, we thank you, and look forward to doing more of the Lord’s
work with you!
All the best…

Division within a Christian community is a very grave sin; it is the
work of the devil.
When a society lacks God, even prosperity is joined by a terrible
spiritual poverty.

Some people are kind, polite, and sweet - spirited until you
try to sit in their pews.
Don’t let your worries get the best of you; remember, Moses
started out as a “basket case”.

LIVES OF THE SAINTS for This Week
November 13 - St. Frances Xavier Cabrini (1850-1917)
Maria Francesca Cabrini, born in Italy, began teaching in an
orphanage at age twenty-four; six years later, she founded the
Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart. In 1889, at the request of
Pope Leo XIII, she traveled to the United States to work with
Italian immigrants. Her congregation spread throughout the United
States, Italy, South and Central America, and England. In 1946,
she became the first American citizen to be canonized. From her,
we learn that “we must pray without tiring, for salvation depends
on Jesus alone.”
RETREAT WITH POPE FRANCIS - DVD SERIES AT
OUR LADY OF GOOD COUNSEL PARISH’S RACKLEY ROOM
This series continues on Monday, November 10 at 7:30 PM with
“A Listening Pope” as the topic. The session is about 20 minutes
followed by a discussion. For further information, call Sister Miriam at

A PRAYER FOR THE WORLD MEETING OF FAMILIES - IN PHILADELPHIA IN 2015
God and Father of us all, in Jesus, our Son and our Savior, you have made us your sons and daughters in the family of
the Church. May your grace and love help our families in every part of the world be united to one another in fidelity to
the Gospel. May the example of the Holy Family, with the aid of your Holy Spirit, guide all families, especially those
most troubled, to be homes of communion and prayer and to always seek your truth and live in your love. Through
Christ our Lord. Amen. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, pray for us.
