If we answer it according to our culture’s definition then we will reduce Jesus to another ancient voice whose teachings are out of date with today’s world. Our society tells us that Jesus’ teaching on the sanctity of life, morality, on what is acceptable behavior and what is right and what is wrong is out of touch with today’s world and need not be listened to. If on the other hand, we answer as St. Peter does: “YOU ARE THE CHRIST OF GOD!” Then Jesus’ words, his teachings, his commandments are a living presence in the world. His teachings are eternal, they are for every age and every generation. They are as valid today as when they were revealed to us by God. And, we must live by them each and every day of our lives. As disciples of Jesus we cannot accept the moral relativism of our day. Our morality cannot be based on what is politically correct, what is based on current feelings or on the amoral anti-Christian secularism of our society. Jesus words, his teachings must form the basis of our lives and decision making. We cannot have a well formed conscience without them. In the Gospel Jesus tells us: “The Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected . . .. He then tells us that: “If anyone (meaning us) wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me”. When we follow Jesus, when we live his words and teachings when we are witnesses to him we will suffer in the world today. When we give up the immoral behaviors that are acceptable in today’s society, when we speak the truth about the sanctity of life from conception to natural death, when we speak of marriage as between a man and a woman, when we say that our gender is the way we are born we will be ridiculed, we will be ostracized and we will be persecuted. We will be called all kinds of names to try and silence us, names like homophobic, anti-women, reactionary and many other names. All in an effort to silence us. Take courage for when they do so you can be sure that you are following Jesus. For our Lord has told us this will happen. In the Gospel Jesus says: “Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you [falsely] because of me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven. Thus they persecuted the prophets who were before you”. Matthew 5: vs. 11-12 JESUS ASKS US TODAY: “WHO DO YOU SAY I AM?” As we enter this summer time as school closes and we take vacation time, let each of us ponder this question in our hearts. For how we answer the question will determine who we are in relation to Jesus. Living Stones Update See the flyer in today’s bulletin. May God bless you, Fr. Stephen Cinque 586 Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three YOUTH MINISTRY people have fled their homes because of war, violence and persecution. Let us join in praye for these people.
