FROM THE PASTOR
“Gaudete Sunday” -- Third Sunday of Advent
rd
My dear sisters and brothers the 3 Sunday of Advent marks the halfway mark of our “Advent: Journey to Bethlehem”. Today is
known as “Gaudete Sunday” or “Rejoice Sunday”. It is taken from the opening Antiphon of the mass: “Rejoice in the Lord always;
again I say, rejoice, indeed, the Lord is near”. We rejoice because the day of the Lord draws near. The Rose colored candle on the
Advent Wreath and the Rose colored vestment of the priest remind us of the joy that is ours because of the closeness of the Lord.
In the Church’s celebration of the liturgy on this day we begin not only the anticipation of our Lord’s coming again in glory at the
end of time but also the remembrance of his birth in Bethlehem 2000 years ago. We focus on the mystery of the union of God and
man in the person of Jesus. Let us be filled with that joy that comes from the love of God made manifest in His Son, born of Mary.
Our Gospel reading from St. Luke is on St. John the Baptist’s message of the coming of the Savior. St. John says: “One mightier
than I is coming. I am not worthy to loosen the thongs of his sandals”. From this point on our Advent celebration will shift to the
theme of the Birth of Jesus on Christmas day.
Let us try in these hectic final days leading up to Christmas Day not to lose sight of what we are celebrating. We are celebrating
the great mystery of the Incarnation, when God and Man became one in Jesus. We must prepare ourselves spiritually for this great
mystery. Two ways we can do this is by setting aside time for prayer and repentance. The first is by celebrating the Sacrament of
Reconciliation. There is no better way than by participating in tomorrow night’s Communal Penance Service.
“Communal Penance Service”
Our Deanery Communal Penance Service will be held tomorrow evening, Monday, December 14th at 7:30 pm, at Our Lady Mother
of the Church in Woodcliff Lake. We invite everyone to take advantage of this opportunity to receive the Sacrament of
Reconciliation during this Advent Season. Priests from all of the parishes in our Deanery will join together to hear confessions.
The Penance Service will consist of music, scripture readings a homily and an examination of Conscience. There is no better way
to prepare for the celebration of our Savior’s Birth on Christmas Day then to receive His gift of reconciliation.
A second way is to put aside all the craziness for an hour or so and come and join in our “Night of the Fathers Love” a visual
and song filled reflection on the birth of Christ.
A Night of the Father’s Love
We invite you to come for a wonderful spiritual evening of sight and song this Wednesday evening at 7:30 pm. A musical
Evening of Reflection in the Marian Center with the Quartet of Singers from St. Therese Church in Succasunna. It will be
beautiful experience of the Advent Season.
We are Living Stones Campaign
There will be a meeting of those who have volunteered for “We are Living Stones Campaign” on this Thursday evening, Dec.
17th, at 7:30 pm in the Rectory.
May God bless you,
Fr. Stephen Cinque
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS
OUR GIVING TREE is set-up in the vestibule of the school
building, one on the closet door in the little church and one in
the vestibule of the Marian Center. This year it contains
ornaments for East Harlem Parish, Covenant House and the
Harrison House Aids Patients of Bergen Pines. Take as
many ornaments as you would like, purchase the item on the
ornament or an appropriate gift for that person, wrap the gift
and attach the ornament on the gift for us to identify it. As
we journey through Advent please keep this person in your
prayers. The gifts need to be returned to the tree in the school
vestibule by December 15th in order for us to sort and delivered
in time for Christmas. Any questions call Claudia at 201-6641679.
