CONVERSION
Greatly to be feared is God in his sanctuary; he, the God of Israel,
gives power and strength to his people. Blessed be God!
First Reading: Ezekiel 47:1-2. 8-9.12
Ezekiel bears witness: the living God can never allow himself to
become a prisoner in the houses made by human hands. Reading
this text we cannot escape the impression that the temple is
incapable of containing the whole of that divine life it was believed
to hold. The water springing from the right-hand side becomes a
torrent bringing health and fruitfulness. Many years later there was
a day when, in front of the temple, Jesus pronounced that streams
of living water would flow from his side to bring life to believers.
Response to the Psalm 45
The waters of the river gladden the city of God
Second Reading: St Paul to the Corinthians 3:9-11.16-17
‘In Paul’s case there is no doubt: house and temple are images of
spiritual realities. Christ is the foundation: the apostle, the
architect; we are the temple; and God is present by his Spirit in us.
Gospel Acclamation:
Alleluia, Alleluia!
I have chosen and sanctified this house, says the Lord,
that my name may remain in it for all time.
Alleluia!
Gospel: John 2:13-22
Jesus performs an act which provokes the rulers of the temple to
proceed against him. For Christ, material buildings at Jerusalem or
anywhere else can well be destroyed: the body of the risen Lord
will remain forever.

Reflection
The St John Lateran Basilica is the cathedral church of the Bishop of Rome (the Pope) who, in the words of the Church
Fathers, ‘presides in love’ over the universal Church. Its dedication is marked with a special honour throughout the
universal church today, taking precedence over the normal Sunday liturgy. Places are important in our human
experience; and sacred places feature prominently in the world’s religious traditions. Jerusalem’s temple was an
outstanding symbol in the faith experience of old Israel. There, in the words of the psalms, God’s people ‘saw the face
of God’.
Sometimes religious places and symbols are in danger of becoming more important for people than the things they
symbolise. Today’s liturgy reminds us of this – the Church we believe in as we join in today’s celebration is not a
magnificent Roman building, but a living temple, the Body of Christ, in which God has come to dwell. May St John
Lateran Basilica and all Catholic churches open people to experience the living God revealed to us in Jesus Christ, and
may it lead them to truly belong to the Church, the living Body of Christ.
Praying for the Dead:
Traditionally, in November we make a special effort to pray for those who have died. In the sanctuary there is a
special space set up: there is a Book of Remembrance where you are invited to write the names of those you
would like the parishioners to remember at Mass and in other prayers. There is also a basket where you are
invited to leave an envelope for a November Mass Offering. Those who are in planned giving have such an
envelope. There are extra November Mass Offering envelopes available on the sanctuary table and in the foyer.
Please pray for our recently deceased:
Margaret King
And for those whose anniversaries that occur at
this time:
Joaquin Loyzaga (5th anniversary),
Lucy Mifsud (3rd anniversary), Kevin Goodwin
Please pray for the sick in our community:
Juliet Bowron, Colette MacKinnon,
Max O’Connor
Appointment of Archbishop of Sydney
St Agatha’s Parish congratulates and prays for Bishop Anthony
Fisher OP, who will be installed as the ninth Archbishop of Sydney
th
on 12 November.
Some parishioners have asked me to write something in the
bulletin about the appointment of the next Bishop of Broken Bay.
The Papal Nuncio in Australia, Archbishop Paul Gallagher consults
widely and seeks advice. He makes recommendations to the
Vatican’s Congregation for Bishops, which in turn advises Pope
Francis, who makes the appointment. Until then, the diocese is
under the leadership of the Diocesan Administrator,
Fr Vince Casey.
Special Morning Teas:
An open invitation to parishioners attending the Friday
9.30am Mass to join others for morning tea in an effort
to build greater community. Please bring a plate if you
can! This will be on the second or third Friday of the
month on the following dates for 2014: 14 November and
12 December.
Baptism Congratulations!
