The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica
First Reading: For the King of Israel, Solomon, the temple was a place of God’s presence, a place
where he would dwell. So it is today.
Second Reading: The universal Church is a new temple in Christ. God’s people are where God is
dwelling.
Gospel: The temple of God’s people is made holy by his blessing. But Christ’s presence is what
makes the Church holy. In him God’s people are a new temple, a building founded on the apostles
and on Christ himself.
Most of us know what St. Peter’s Basilica looks like, that huge church in Rome, where the Pope
often says Mass. Yet, the Pope is the Bishop of Rome. His cathedral church, his principal church, is
not St. Peter’s but the Church of St. John Lateran. That is the church whose founding we celebrate
today. It is the mother church of all Christians.
