PROPOSED 2015 BUDGET AND SCHOOL FEE PRESENTATION MEETING: Ben Roberts – SGB Treasurer
The budget, summarized below, will be presented in full at the MGPS SGB Budget meeting set for Wednesday 5 November at 18h30 in
the school hall. Parents are encouraged to attend the meeting and can submit comments and suggestions to the SGB via SGB members or
direct to the Bursar, Mrs Strydom, at bursar@mgps.org.za prior to the meeting. Please note that this meeting is for adults only and a
child care facility will be provided in the Junior Primary Reading Room. If you have not completed the Budget Meeting attendance
reply slip below, please do so and return it to school at the latest by Wednesday morning.
The SGB is proposing a 9.5% school fee increase for the 2015 school budget which is expected to grow by an overall 10.3%. Despite
general inflationary pressure, the school remains committed to retaining its small family oriented feel as its facilities with small classrooms do
not allow for much growth in class sizes or pupil numbers. The main driver of the budget remains costs related to SGB employed teaching
staff, which make up more than 50% of the total staff complement at the school. State pay increases for teaching staff are expected to
range between 7% and 8% and it is imperative for the School to offer conditions similar to those earned by state employed teachers to
continue to ensure the retention of qualified staff. The proposed increase is likely to be within the range proposed by other government fee
paying primary schools in the area and every effort has been made to avoid any excess expenditure that cannot be justified. The budget has
also sought to take account of issues raised by parents during the course of the 2014 school year.
It should be noted that due to government policy requirements, we have again included items such as book fees into the full fees per Grade
to avoid charging these on an ad hoc basis. This was done for foundation phase gym fees in 2013 and for book fees since 2014.

NITS AND LICE ALERT
We request that you check your child’s hair as a matter of urgency, as it has come to our attention that a number of Grade 2 children have
head lice. Should lice/nits be detected, treatment must be carried out as soon as possible. The following information should assist with the
detection and treatment of lice and nits:
How are head lice and nits detected:
- Adult louse are smaller than a grain of rice in length and have 6 legs
- Head lice are greyish and are not easily spotted among the hair
- Nits (eggs) are the size of a grain of sugar
- Lice and nits are usually found in the hair line close to the scalp, behind the ears and in the nape of the neck
- Nits are firmly attached to the hair whilst dandruff lies loosely around the hair and is easily removed
- Fine black dust (the excrement of lice) can be seen on pillows.
How is head lice treated:
- All members of the family must be treated simultaneously otherwise re-infestation can occur
- Ordinary shampoo and soap cannot kill lice and nits
- Use medicated shampoos or lotions from the chemist to kill lice and nits and use the comb in the package
- Use the medicated preparations strictly according to directions
- Divide the wet hair into small segments and comb with the fine tooth comb to remove the nits and lice
- Inspect the hair daily for the next 10 days for remaining live nits and lice. Repeat the treatment if necessary
- Wash clothes and bedding in hot water and iron to kill live nits
- Do not exchange hats, combs or brushes
- Wash combs and brushes with the medicated lotion or shampoo
- Avoid physical contact with people that are infected.
Lice do NOT come from being dirty. Head lice are quite common in schools as it is easily spread amongst groups of children.
Your child may not return to school until they are completely free of lice or nits. You may need to get a certificate to prove
this from your clinic or doctor.
