Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome Pastor’s Corner Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica – This feast day is really the story of the evolution of the Church. Soon after the Emperor Constantine legalized Christianity in the Roman Empire, he passed on this site from the wealthy Lateran family to be a Cathedral in Rome. The first basilica was built soon after. Though this structure and its successors suffered fire, earthquake, and the ravages of war, the Lateran remained the church where popes were consecrated until popes returned from the Avignon in the Fourteenth Century. Lateran continues to be “the pope’s church”, the cathedral for the Diocese of Rome where the Bishop of Rome presides. The current structure is one of four basilicas in Rome and was built in 1646. It bears the name St. John Lateran from it’s patron saints, St. John the Evangelist and St. John the Baptist. Parish Directory – The new joint parish directory is now available. Please pick up your copy after weekend mass or stop by the office to request it. Special thanks to Rhonda Dingmann and Rita Schroeder in Richmond, and to Teri Kaschmitter and Rene Kalthoff, and a host of volunteers, for their creative work and personal attention to including so many parishioner photos and to administrative detail with the project. Web Page – The new joint parish web page is now up. Special thanks to Deb Lampert and Ken Oksendahl in the office in Richmond for their great care and numerous hours invested in it. Thank you also to our editors and reviewers from both parishes, especially Mary Jo Schlick and Karen Pundsack in St. Martin. Please log onto http://www.ssppr.com/ to see it, and add it as a “favorite” on your search engines. You can access ministry lists, have an ongoing calendar of parish events, and be the first to read the bulletin each week. Feast of St. Martin of Tours/Veterans Day – Nov 11 is both the patron feast day of the Church of St. Martin and Veterans Day. Let us offer our prayers and thanks to those who have served their country. Let us also pray for the ongoing mission of the Church of St. Martin. May it aspire to the spiritual depth and integrity of its patron saint, who is best known for offering a share of his own cloak to the beggar in the cold. May we, like St. Martin, find Christ in through our acts of mercy. Special Thanks – to Mary Jo Schlick for coordinating this year’s mass of remembrance. Thank you also to Jermayne Mages for coordinating music and the Richmond choir for joining in. Thank you to the Befrienders for offering hospitality, and to the crew providing refreshments. I believe we all found healing in each other’s presence. The 2014 Parish Directory has arrived, and is being distributed after weekend Masses. ADVENT At The Church of Sts. Koinonia is a community experience in Christian living designed especially for adults 20 and older. It is a Catholic Retreat program (Nov 14-16), sponsored by the St. Cloud Diocese. It starts at 5:30 PM Friday and ends Sunday evening about 5:00 PM. See website centralmnkoinonia.org for an application, or call LeRoy and Mary Lou Raden at 320-293-2080, or email them at cmkoinonia@gmail.com. Sunday at the Abbey – is Nov 16, 7:00 PM, Saint John’s Abbey, Collegeville. The presentation will feature John Thavis speaking on “The Francis Revolution: Are the Bishops on Board?” Pope Francis wants to make the Church more a "field hospital" dispensing mercy and less a fortress defending doctrine, but he faces internal resistance and outright opposition in some quarters. This fall's Synod of Bishops offers the first real test of whether the world's bishops will support his reform agenda. Catholic Charities annual Make God’s Love Visible Campaign – Give. Help. Change. Catholic Charities offers services that connect people with homes, feed the hungry, increase mental health strengthen families and keep seniors healthy and well. Your mission awaits – Through the sacrament of Baptism, we’re called and empowered by God to continue the mission of Jesus. Each of us has received unique gifts of the Spirit for this mission. After all, such an expansive mission requires diverse gifts—different skills, personalities, perspectives, abilities! But there can also be challenges. It can be tempting to compare the gifts of one person or group with those of another. Do they measure up? Do we measure up? Are some people holier? The good news of Baptism is that we’re all called to holiness. We all measure up! We’re all needed to bring about love, peace, and justice. How will you embrace your baptismal call today? -Take Five for Faith The 2014 Parish Directory has arrived, and is being distributed after weekend mass.
