Weekly Newsletter Coyle & Cassidy High School and Middle School Division
Coyle & Cassidy High School and Middle School Division 11/14/2014 Weekly Newsletter A Note from the Principal From the Health Office Congratulations to all of our students who achieved honor roll status during the first quarter! Your hard work certainly has been evident. I would encourage all of our students to continue their efforts. Please seek out extra help from your teachers as needed. Tutoring is also available through the National Honor Society. Students can check with their guidance counselor for more information. This week, I began mandatory height and weight screenings for seventh and tenth graders. If you do not want your child screened, you must notify me in writing. Spirit week is almost upon us! This is a very exciting time for all students to show their school spirit and compete as a class to earn spirit points. It is also a great way to give back to the community. Please see the detailed information provided by Mrs. Angeley in this newsletter. I would like to thank all of our fall student athletes and coaches for their commitment to their team and to our school! Job well done. Good luck to the cast and crew of ―Short Cuts‖, the first CC Drama production of the season. I wish all of our families a great weekend and week ahead. Thanks to all of you for submitting your children’s immunization records to me. We are now 100% compliant with immunization documentation. Many students have approached me asking for allergy medication. The health office does not provide allergy medication. If your child requires any medication (other than Tylenol or Motrin) you must supply the medication along with a doctor’s order. This applies to Epi Pens and Inhalers, and over-the-counter medications, including medicated cough drops. If your child has an inhaler or Epi Pen that they carry with them, there needs to be an order on file in the Health Office. I will be sending letters home soon to students with a history of asthma/ inhaler use and Epi Pen use who do not have current orders on file. If your child has an inhaler or Epi Pen, please provide me with a physician order (if you have not already submitted one this school year). Sincerely, Karen Wenger, R.N.,MS Sincerely, Kathleen St.Laurent Principal [STORY TITLE] FROM THE VICE PRINCIPAL OF STUDENT AFFAIRS SPIRIT WEEK ACTIVITIES AND WEAR News Flash! ADMISSIONS AND GUIDANCE GUIDANCE NEWS A reminder to seniors that we will automatically send first quarter grades to all schools! Many schools send out notices automatically. If you like, you can check with each school to ensure all materials have been received; however bear in mind it takes them a few weeks to organize the thousands of applications and materials they receive! NAVIANCE HELPFUL HINTS: SENIORS: The computer lab has been reserved for COMMON APP/NAVIANCE help sessions NEXT week. The schedule is posted in Senior English Rooms! It is very important for you to check NAVIANCE updating your admissions decisions as they come in! Naviance also houses our local scholarship list. Check it often. FRESHMAN and SOPHOMORES: Naviance training is scheduled for the week of December 15th! We can’t wait to get you started! ADMISSIONS JUNIORS: Naviance and the college search process will begin in earnest in JANUARY. Should you want to start looking www.collegeboard.com has a great search engine. Once on NAVIANCE you will be linked to many new resources. In the meantime start thinking about ―Campus Style‖; do you want a large school, small school, city or suburban campus. Having a conversation as a family surrounding a realistic distance from home and bottom line cost is worth having sooner rather than later! The Guidance Department will walk you through the entire process!! MIDDLE SCHOOL DIVISION No Taunton Public School Bus on Wednesday, November 26, 2014 On Friday, November 14, sixty-five percent of our Middle School students received Honor Roll recognition. The recipients and their families were invited, along with the Middle School community, to a special ceremony recognizing their academic achievement. All were welcomed to an ice cream social following the ceremony. Congratulations to the recipients and their families. For Families of Athletes: The Middle School Basketball game schedules can be found at www.miaa.net, under the school look-up tab (Coyle & Cassidy.) Loaves and Fishes! The Middle School Campus Ministry is collecting non-perishable food items for distribution through the Coyle Food Pantry. Please be especially generous at this time of need. Grade 8 Community Service begins! Students in Grade 8 will participate in a community service program where they visit and participate in activities with residents at Marian Manor Nursing Home and with clients at Bethany House Adult Day Health Center. This program is an outreach for all students in Grade 8 that will be done by groups from Religion classes and will take place after school on Tuesdays from 2:00-3:00pm. This program requires students be transported to these agencies, which is a change from past years when we were able to walk from school. We are looking for parents who would be willing and able to drive our students to this service each week. Students would then be picked up at the sites by family or returned if necessary to our ESP program at school. If you can assist us, please contact Mr. Daniel Thompson at dthompson@cc.dfrcs.org or call 508.823.6164 ext. 617. All parent volunteers must participate in abuse training session and complete a CORI application as required by Diocesan policy. Thank you and God bless. Dr. Corinne R. Merritt Vice-Principal Academic Affairs Middle School Division Helpful Hints for Middle School Families Time to disconnect: Too much technology can prevent your tween from interacting with people in real life. It can also interfere with sleep and physical activity. Consider these suggestions for keeping him or her tech time in balance: Make a ratio rule. For every half hour your child spends on the computer, she should spend an hour doing something else, such as riding a bike or playing the guitar. Create digital-free zones. No cell phones or tablets at the dinner table or in restaurants. Insist that devices go off at bedtime. Children could stay up for hours playing games or watching videos. They can also be awakened by texts or sleep lightly in anticipation of them. Try setting up a family charging station where everyone must leave their devices.
