Participants will receive pesticide applicators General Standards and Category 24 (Ornamentals and Turf) training.* This session will be divided into three parts: 4 Team UGA Super Grasses for the Future & Pain-Free Pesticide Application Wednesday, December 10 | 8:00 am - 11:00 am Developing Stress and Pest Tolerant Grasses: An update will be given on the development and testing of new bermudagrasses, zoysiagrasses, and centipedegrasses for home lawns, sports fields, and golf courses. Included in this presentation will be research on shade persistence, traffic tolerance, and nematode resistance. A brief look into the economic considerations of fertility requirements, pesticide applications, and mowing frequencies for new grasses given by turfgrass breeders before selection will also be discussed. (Avoiding) Angry Dogs and Irate Customers: Differentiating between pest injuries, pesticide-related injury, and environmentalinduced injury is difficult for trained individuals, and even more difficult to explain to homeowners. In this workshop, the professional landscaper’s responsibilities for pesticide application and how to handle situations that may occur after application are discussed. Using various case studies the participants learn the importance of proper pest diagnosis, proper turfgrass species identification, and how these factor into pesticide application. Topic areas include importance of reading the label, calibration, proper spray coverage, climatic influences, and environmental impacts. At the conclusion of the workshop the participants should have gained an appreciation of the preparation which should occur prior to pesticide application that would aid in mitigating customer complaints and avoid regulatory violations. This workshop will also present some communication skills to relate common problems and reasonable expectation of pest management programs to the consumer. Dr. Clint Waltz & Dr. Brian Schwartz, University of Georgia Wednesday, December 10 | 8:00 am - 11:30 am General Standards training Category 24 training Wednesday, December 10 | 2:00 pm - 4:30 pm Thursday, December 11 | 8:00 am - 12:30 pm The General Standards and Category 24 exams The General Standards exam is designed to test for general knowledge on the use of pesticides. The Category 24 exam includes commercial applicators using or supervising the use of restricted use pesticides, or state-restricted pesticide uses, to control pests in the maintenance and production of ornamental trees, shrubs, flowers, and turf. Upon successful completion of the exam, attendees will be given information to apply for pesticide license with the GA Dept. of Agriculture ($95 fee for five year license). You must register for the full two-day workshop to take the exam. * Registration for the training course does not include training manuals. Manuals can be pre-ordered for an additional charge, for pick-up or delivery. See page 11 to order. (Or Keep Doing What You’re Doing and Hope for the Best) Wednesday, December 10 | 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm Has your company been stuck in a same growth rut? Each year you set a goal for growth, but you can’t seem to reach it? Are you just trading customers with your competitors or are you building new markets? When you do experience growth, are you getting the financial reward for the effort and risk or is the year-end result the same minimal profit? Learn what is needed to grow your business in a profitable and controlled manner. Before you set goals and a plan, you must understand how a company grows and what challenges will come with each stage. Setting a growth goal alone does not assure that it will be achieved; you must implement and manage your company to achieve your desired results. Economic conditions make it even more challenging to achieve your financial goal, but 2015 is the time to break the pattern and grow profitably. Jerry Gaeta, J. Understanding the interaction between these three factors is crucial to preventing disease development in the landscape. This talk will review the most common problems encountered in home landscapes (trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals - Boxwood blight, rose rosette, Leyland cypress disease) over the past year based on the diagnoses made at UGA, along with new diseases just beginning to make their appearance in the landscape. Strategies of how to best manage these problems will be discussed. Thursday, December 11 | 8:00 am - 10:00 am Do you know your cost of doing business or performing the work that you sell or are you just guessing? Do you realize that you may actually be selling your work for less than it costs you to perform it? The present economic conditions have caused the consumer to shop more selectively for services, seeking the lowest price. You can no longer hope you will become more profitable by guesswork and luck. This seminar will demonstrate the importance of an estimating strategy. Then you’ll learn to develop and implement the strategy to become profitable and stable - to ensure your company’s survival - no matter the size of the business. Jerry Gaeta, J.
