Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe
You spread the table before me in the sight of my foes; . . . Only
goodness and kindness follow me all the days of my life; and I shall
dwell in the house of the LORD for years to come.
Ps23:5-6
Dear Parishioners,
The celebration of the feast of Thanksgiving flows out
of the hearts of a people who are grateful for God’s many
choice graces and blessings and nowhere more so than in
the family. On Thanksgiving we are grateful for each
other as a family and also mindful of those who go
without. The words of Pope Francis express this well as he
challenges us to become “the tender embrace of Jesus for
all who are marginalized and on the fringes, and on the
frontiers of the society in which we live…. There is
something important in that word embrace…Embracing is
not just an idea; it is a process. It means going out and
meeting, encountering, moving from the polite handshake
to the warm grip in which people become truly friends.”
The people of this Parish generously put into practice
the words of the Holy Father as they take home Thanksgiving bags and return them for those in need, for those at
our sister parish, Our Lady of Angels, and those who go
there for help and support, especially to celebrate the feast
of Thanksgiving. By way of extension it is our way of ensuring that those who find themselves on the margins or
left outside are made to feel welcome and included, which
is the call of the Gospel.
In our own Thanksgiving Mass we also enjoy that fine
custom of baking bread to be shared at the end of the liturgy so that it ends up on each other’s table – certainly a
wonderful custom of inclusion.
There are many ways we are called to outreach to
those on the margins of church life. Speaking at all
Masses last weekend, Dr. Charles Farrow, Children’s Hospital, offers us one way as he calls on those who wish to
help develop a ministry toward families of children with
special needs. He even suggests we have a special-needs
faith formation class. Some have already res-ponded.
All of this and much more can only happen because of
the grateful hearts of a parish community. It remains then,
on behalf of the clergy and parish staff to wish you all a
very blessed and happy Thanksgiving!
Fr. Nick
Thanksgiving Eve Mass
will be Wednesday,
November 26, at 7 P.M.
A great, big Thank you to all those
who have responded with pledges!
Our total as of Nov. 17 is:
$1,208,532 from 532 families.
If you have not yet replied, please
prayerfully consider your gift. May
God bring to completion the good
work we have begun in this campaign.
Today is the Diocesan collection
for National Needs.
Envelopes are available
in the back of the Church.
Our Parish has a beautiful tradition
of blessing and distributing homemade
loaves of bread at our Thanksgiving
Eve Mass. We are looking for
volunteers to bake bread so that we
may continue the warm and wonderful
gift of giving a loaf of bread at the end of Mass.
Breads, such as zucchini, pumpkin, etc., would be
greatly appreciated. Please no white bread. If you are
able to help us, please bake a few individually-wrapped
small loaves of bread and bring them to Mass for distribution.
If you would like to help carry out this marvelous tradition and cannot attend Mass that evening, just bring them
to the Parish Office during the day Tuesday or
Wednesday before Thanksgiving.
HOME VISITS: If you are shut-in and would
like Anointing of the Sick, or you know of
someone who would like to receive
Anointing, please contact the Parish Office to
schedule a visit with Fr. Nick.

Lessons & Carols Concert
St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church
Music Ministry will present a free Christmas
concert on Friday, December 5, at 7 P.M., for the
Advent and Christmas season. This concert is a
service of Scripture and song entitled, a “Festival
of Lessons and Carols”.
The tradition of this service dates to the late
19th century. In the service, the audience will listen
to nine Scripture lessons which recount the Fall,
the promise of a Messiah, the Incarnation, and the
Great Commission to preach the Good News.
Each lesson is followed by a carol or other song,
and a brief prayer that reflects on the lessons
message.
All are invited to pray and reflect to prepare
their hearts and minds for the coming of our
Savior, Jesus Christ.
The Parish Office will be closed
Thursday & Friday, November 27 &

As the season of Thanksgiving approaches, we are called to
embrace an Attitude of Gratitude, which is the basic premise of
stewardship living. Recognizing that everything we have comes from
God, we might be inspired to take another look at the word
“Thanksgiving”, replacing the word “Giving” with “Living”; we would
transition from “Thanksgiving” to “Thanks-living”. In a nutshell, Thanksliving is “ thanking God for the gift of life, by living it triumphantly…
thanking God for opportunities, by accepting them as a challenge to
achievement… thanking God for inspiration, by living to be an
inspiration to others… it is adding to our prayers of thanksgiving, acts of
thanks-living.”(Dee F. Anderson)
Students in several of our classes explored learning opportunities
outside the classroom recently. The eighth graders traveled to the
Ronald Regan Presidential Library in Simi Valley. This fabulous
experience included interactive decision –making in the Situation
Room, tour of the museum, visit to the Oval Office replica, and entry to
Air Force One.
Several of our students were part of the cast in the recent
Metropolitan Educational Theater Network production of Beauty and
the Beast at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts. Our sixth
graders showed their support by attending a matinee of the production.
First and fourth graders will soon be traveling to the Old Globe Theater
for the annual production of the Grinch.
Stewardship projects are ongoing at our school. The Halloween
Candy Buy-Back generated 181 pounds of candy donated by students.
The candy goes to our troops overseas and the buy-back generated
$181 for the missions. A big “Thank You” to Dr. Maulik at Scripps
Poway Orthodontics for partnering with us on this project. We were
able to send $220 to the GI Go Fund from Jeans for the Troops Day in
honor and support of our Veterans. Our students and their family were
very generous by donating hundreds of canned goods in support of the
Food Drive for Our Lady of Angels Parish.
The School will be closed for
Thanksgiving Break from November 24—28.
We are so blessed, and have so much for
which to be grateful. On behalf of the
students, parents, faculty and staff, we wish
you all a very blessed and peaceful Thanksgiving.
For information about St. Gregory the Great Catholic School,
contact the School Office at 858 397-1290, or at office@stggcs.org. We
continue to enroll new students throughout the year!
Our parishioners and visitors made a joyful return to the
Lord in gratitude for the gifts they have received from
God, in the following way.

Christmas Stewardship Program 2014
Each Christmas parishioners from St. Gregory the Great
"sponsor" families in need from our sister parish. The

families who may not otherwise be able to provide during
the holiday season and delivering those gifts to the parish
office on a determined date.
If you are interested in participating or
would like to learn more about this
program please contact Deborah

Adoration of the
Blessed Sacrament
* Thursday & Friday,
December 4 & 5, 2014 *
Jesus awaits your visit!

Prayer before the Blessed
Sacrament extends and enhances
the spirit of prayer we experience
together in the Mass. It deepens
our union with Jesus, Who in turn
blesses us with His peace in our
lives, our families, and our world.
THE NATIVITY STORY: LIVE IT!
Friday, December 12 at 7 P.M.
For the 14th consecutive year the
middle school youth of Saint Gregory
the Great will present their gift to the
Parish and the entire Scripps Ranch
Community to help us all to prepare
for the celebration of Christmas in a
way that places focus on the true
meaning of this wonderful season.
Students from our Parish School
and Faith Formation Program have
been rehearsing since September to perform this timeless
story based on an original script that was written right
here in our Parish. Between scenes there will be
opportunity to join in singing traditional Christmas
carols so you can not only take in the show but also be
part of the action. This is your opportunity to put the
malls and the rush of the holiday shopping season on
hold for an evening and renew your spirit so as to be
ready for the real meaning of Christmas. The
performance is free but, according to many who have
attended in past years, the experience is priceless.
We hope you will join us for this special evening and
bring friends and family, as this event is open to anyone
who wishes to attend.
