President’s
Message
Hi Everyone
The Board and I wish you all a Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, Happy Hannakah,
and a Happy Easter - (!) - all in one breath.
Volunteer opportunities abound at the Center. Many of us come to enjoy the air conditioning in the summer or
the warmth in the winter and are absorbed into a ‘routine’ that can end up being a delightful pastime. Just
showing an interest; watching the action or listening to instructions can become an offer to join. An offer to help

easier way to join a group. Sign up for lunch, ask which seat is available and someone is bound to make
your acquaintance. Check out the ‘Trip Board’ to see if anything interests you, then mosey on down to the
Travel Office to sign up.

Manager’s
Musings
Our mission is to keep everyone safe.
It’s winter again! Oh, my! Here comes the snow. If and when it snows remember to call the Center before
you venture out of your home. The messages for closure will be on the phone by 7:30 am at the latest. We will
also have them posted to Facebook and our website.
We will follow all Centennial School District closings and if need be, will close at times when we feel it is
unsafe for driving. This decision is not made lightly. Much time is spent making the decision and contacting the
many people involved in the Center activities. Watch for specially themed lunches in January and February.
Please, if you know the Center is closed, spread the word to your friends.
Thanks

Meals during Holiday Closings –
Box lunches or frozen meals are available for purchase for $2 each. Please place
your order a minimum of 2 weeks prior to the holiday to ensure availability.
Our lunches are served at noon on Monday through Friday. Some of our current volunteers are unavailable during
the winter months. We are in need of kitchen servers to portion the desserts, salads, etc. (from 7 to 10 am), man
the steam table, and floor servers for liquids, platters, etc. from 11 am until 12:45 pm. (Oh, yes, it includes clean
up, too.) Please speak to me to schedule a day you can help. Don’t forget to sign up and eat here on that day.
I wish all my helpers a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, as well as all our members. May God bless you all.

Computer Classes have become so very popular
that Adele has encouraged some great helpers to
complement her teaching. Classes are still held on
Mondays. Computer help sessions are held on
Wednesday at 1 PM with Adele, Al Vara, Bruce
Smith, Ken Yavit, Maryanne Momorella, and
Miriam Michael alternating with personal, sideby-side, hands on guidance as well as answering
questions and enhancing knowledge as needed.
We are so fortunate to have such dedicated people
at our side. Adele cannot thank her helpers
enough.
Yours truly, Betty Sim (editor) adds her kudos.

We encourage you to personally thank our many sponsors. They partner with the Ben Wilson Activity Center
is so many ways. The advertisers offer you their services and products, many companies come to the Center
and sponsor the activities that are planned for your entertainment. Some companies come to explain their
services and shower us with gifts. The staff is grateful for their support but we members need to show our
appreciation. Few of us want to need outside help, but being aware of the opportunities and services available
can be a life-saver for a spouse or a child who may be your caregiver.
We hope you find this newsletter informative, helpful and enjoyable. We ask you to consider reading it
on the website and/or give us your email address so we can still reach you with information on an
extremely up-to-date basis. Our files are being updated with your current email address. Let us know if
you do not have an email address or if it has changed from your original sign in. The post office has
become less efficient and some towns are not delivering our mail on a timely basis. Your input is very
important to us.

FOOD BANK
As you are aware, many members help the local food bank by bringing and donating canned goods, paper
products, etc. We also have a basket in the lobby in which we collect items needed by our friends. During
this time period we ask you to bring winter hats, gloves, socks, small toys, toothpaste and tooth brushes
(adults’ sizes as well as children’s sizes), soap, shampoo, conditioner, hand lotion, baby lotion and any other
items that a young family may need. We continue to collect items for our elderly friends also. Any act of
kindness is greatly appreciated.
Esteemed Contributors
We gratefully acknowledge Panera Bread, Willow Grove, Warrington and Doylestown; Rilling’s Bucks
County Bakery and Acme Market, Davisville; Lochel Bakery and Philly's Own Soft Pretzel Shop,
Hatboro; Red Lion Diner, Horsham; Bucks Bagel Shop, Giant Supermarket and Wawa, Warminster;
King of Tarts Bakery, Hartsville, Starbucks, Doylestown and Weis Markets, Huntingdon Valley who
donate baked goods, fruits and vegetables for use at our center. Everything is utilized or distributed to local
needy individuals, Meals on Wheels (MOW) clients and local food pantries. The recipients are very grateful
and delighted with the extra goodies. Our cooks, Della, Maria, Yolanda and Pat, also prepare delicious soups
which are enjoyed by all. We are proud to partner with you to serve others. “For I was hungry and you gave
me food; I was thirsty and you gave me drink. I was a stranger and you made me welcome.”

HOW TO STEER THROUGH A DIFFICULT TURN
Whether we are going to the grocery store, the doctor’s office, the golf course or to visit a friend, the ability to drive
provides us a sense of independence. But as we age we lose (some of us more gradually the others) physical and
mental capabilities essential to safe driving, such as vision, hearing, mental acuity, muscle strength and dexterity.
There likely will come a time when, for safety’s sake, we have to give up driving. Until then, there are ways to
compensate for some of the changes that come with aging and to continue to drive safely. These include refresher
driving courses for seniors, provided by driving schools, through senior citizen centers and healthcare providers.
See schedule posted on page 5 for dates of classes here at the Ben Wilson Activity Center.
Information Submitted by Jessica Smith, Director of Marketing, Comfort Keepers – Watch next issue for continuation of subject.

The center, on occasion, is assigned community
service personnel. Most times these persons need
supervision and assignments to fulfill their
obligations. We are in need of members to monitor,
supervise and instruct when necessary. Please see our

New England Rail n’ Sail Trip
One hundred and ten adventurers headed north on Sunday, Oct 19 by bus and experienced great food, pleasant
travelling companions, great views, wonderful accommodations, fun adventures and mostly good weather. Of
course the Northeasterner we encountered was an adventure in itself. Riding the rails along the Portland, Maine
coastline gave us views of the ocean with its surging waves, disappearing beaches and there were several hand
pumps and silent ‘yes’es’ when the Coast Guard cancelled our cruise on those turbulent waters. The pontoon
boat ride on Lake Squam (On Golden Pond) was really neat and only a few naysayers waited us out. Boston was
a great city, truly improved since our last visit, clean as a whistle, and where the ‘mutineers’ made some inroads.
There were the ‘9 Outlaws’ (Tom, Mary Jane, Betty, Florence, David, Bob, Kathryn, Bill and Lillian) who found
Dirty Nelly’s didn’t serve lunch, but around the corner they found Hogwart’s Alley and great food at The Point.
Another group (Phyllis, Angelo, Janice and Jim) went to Dave’s and met a waitstaff with a sense of humor that
made them forget the long walking tour. Needless to say, everyone enjoyed their trip. Thanks Earl

Healthy Lifestyles
By Carolyn Horner
One quick and easy good choice you
can make for your health is eating oat grain.
Oatmeal is a whole grain cereal that is easy to
cook; and it is a nutritional powerhouse. Eating
oatmeal is a delicious way to start your day.
When purchasing oatmeal you should know
that there are different cuts of the grain used for
making it. It’s in the processing. Steel cut oats are
whole grains minimally processed and chopped
into large pieces. Rolled oats are dehusked,
steamed, and press rolled. Quick oats are rolled
thinnest so they cook faster. The least processed
grain results in the most nutritional value. The
difference will also be in the thickness and texture
of your hot cereal.
Oatmeal is a super food since it is high in
nutrients and low in calories! It will help ward
off many different diseases. Oatmeal is high in
protein, soluble fiber, antioxidants, and iron. It is
low in sodium and fat. Oats provide good roughage while stabilizing your blood sugar. They also
reduce cholesterol in your body. This will
decrease your risk for heart disease.
You can boil oatmeal on the stove or in a
microwave. If you are on the go, bring a cup and
your quick oats with you. Add hot water, stir and
enjoy a wholesome meal anywhere and anytime
of the day.
Add some fresh or dried fruits; spices (such
as cinnamon) and honey to liven up your cereal.
Oats can be used in granola, cookies, meat loaf,
waffles, pies and muffins.
Be heart healthy and eat your oats!
Area Agency on Aging (AAA) is an agency
through which State, County and Lottery funds flow to
seniors. Whether it is through programs, service, or
enlightenment each of us has a great source of help at our
fingertips. The staff is cordial, understanding,
knowledgeable and willing to help you in your search for
answers.
Have a need? They will find an existing answer, direct
you to available services or endeavor to start a new
program as needed. Think transportation, low income
housing, food, home care, etc.
Funding also benefits senior centers to better enhance
your social contacts. Our center receives 1/5 of our
funding from Area Agency on Aging. True, a little less
this year due to cutbacks in government funding but it is
still a dependable source of funds.
Lottery ads claim their money is spent on food for
seniors – yes, they do pay the full cost of the meals served
here; (we are asked to donate a nominal cost of $2 per
meal.)
AAA contracts with the supplier for us at the best
possible cost for nutritious meals.
All in all, a great partner!
