Levels of study
There are a broad range of study options at HE level, giving
you complete flexibility. Your starting point will depend on
your skills, experience and qualifications.
Many courses are based on units of study or ‘modules’. Each module lets you earn credits
towards your qualification, whilst giving you a degree of flexibility over the focus of your studies.

FOUNDATION
BA / BSC
DEGREE
HNCs/HNDs are vocationally focussed and can therefore lead
directly to a career. They are also a great stepping stone to a
higher qualification. HNCs can provide access into the second
year of a bachelors degree, whereas HNDs can allow entry
into the second or third year, so you can ‘top-up’ to a full
Honours Degree.
(HONS)
A Higher National Certificate (HNC) takes one year of full-time
study or two years of part-time study.

We deliver many of our Higher Education courses in partnership with The University of Wolverhampton and Staffordshire
University. We also work with Edexcel & Pearson to offer a flexible range of HNC and HND qualifications at levels 4 and 5.
A Higher National Diploma (HND) takes two years to complete,
if studied full-time and three to four years if studied part-time.
Foundation Degree
Foundation Degrees are work-based qualifications that are
offered in a range of vocational areas. All Foundation Degrees
offer a guaranteed progression route to at least one named
Honours Degree at one of our partner Universities. Developed
with local employers to meet skills shortages, Foundation
Degrees have a substantial amount of work-based learning and
assessment including, in some cases, delivery in the workplace,
with students having the support of a workplace mentor.
They usually take two years to complete if studied full-time or
three to four years if studied part-time.
BA / BSc (Hons)
A Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Sciences Honours Degree
(360 credits) is usually a full-time academic course lasting for
three years. Students progressing from a Foundation Degree or
Higher National route may be able to progress onto the third
year of an Honours Degree on a full or part-time basis.
On completion, students may be eligible for postgraduate
study such as a Master of Arts or Sciences.
Many of our courses can be studied on a part-time basis,
either during the day or on an evening. You will still receive
the same levels of support, but study is more flexible to fit
around your work and home life.
Full-time - 1 year
Our Foundation Year and Access to HE courses are
delivered full-time and take just one year to complete,
so you’ll be prepared for entry onto a higher award in no
time. You can find out more about our access courses on
page 51.
Full-time - 2 years
We offer full-time Degrees over a two year period that
will also encompass some work placement hours. These
awards give you a full HE experience but with the added
value of industry experience, where modules are taken
within the workplace. This enhances your CV and allows
you to experience ‘real-life’ work in your chosen
subject area.
Distance Learning
Some awards are available through our distance-learning
model. This means your studying is done online with block
College attendance weeks, which are allocated throughout
each semester.

Part-time study is ideal for those of you who may already have work or family commitments.
Many of our part-time courses are offered in partnership with Staffordshire University, and are run
during the day or of an evening, giving you complete flexibility.

What happens next?
After we’ve considered your application, you will be invited
to an interview at one of our campuses. If you are successful,
UCAS will notify you of our decision.
After receiving your results
Once your results have been confirmed, UCAS will remind you
(by e-mail) that you need to confirm your offered place with
us. This will secure your place and enrolment details can then
be forwarded to you at the appropriate time.
However confident you are about achieving the results you
need, things don’t always go to plan. If you don’t meet the
precise conditions of the offer we made you, don’t worry as it
may still be possible for us to offer you a place on your chosen
course. Contact us for advice as soon as you can.

Clearing
The clearing process gives thousands of students a second
chance to find a place in Higher Education, particularly if results
are not as expected. You can register through Clearing and
apply to us directly where quick decisions will be made on your
application (usually within 24 hours). If you go through UCAS
clearing and decide to contact us again, do so without delay
and remind us that you applied to us during the first phase.
UCAS Extra
This is the opportunity to apply for another course if you have
used all five choices and not secured a place. UCAS Extra runs
from the end of February until the end of June.

Where do I get UCAS points from?
We welcome applications from students with a wide variety of qualifications, skills and
experiences. In fact, we lead the way in recognising alternative routes into University and take
pride in attracting students from diverse backgrounds and with non-traditional qualifications.
So please contact us even if you’re not sure you have the necessary qualifications to study.
In most cases the entry requirements for our courses
are shown in UCAS tariff points. To study with us you’ll
need to have obtained at least the minimum amount of
UCAS tariff points required for your chosen course. Before
applying for any course it is important to check the
specific entry requirements.

Highly practical and hugely rewarding, the Foundation degree in Film and Television Production
Technology is designed for anyone seeking a career in the highly competitive world of film
and television.
The BSc (Hons) in Film and Television Production Technology is open to those who have
previously completed a relevant Foundation Degree (or equivalent qualification) and wish
to top-up to a full degree.
Whether you want to work in a technical or management capacity you’ll be offered the
opportunity to gain and demonstrate the practical skills and expert knowledge required to
become a confident member or leader of any production team.
The award is highly practical with a strong academic underpinning, giving you the opportunity

and television production are predominantly practical, with
a high degree of work-placement. They allow students to

Assessment
Assignments are built around both independent and major
collaborative projects with specialist areas of study designed to

Assessment is ongoing throughout the duration of the
course with, in most cases, practical work supported by
production paperwork. You’ll have regular reviews with a
work-based mentor and course tutor, with summative
assessment at the end of the course.
There is also an element of peer assessment.

Complementary Therapies is an emerging profession and as such, growing the evidence base
is the key to the professionalisation of the sector. This award is for those complementary
therapy practitioners who wish to practice clinically. The course places emphasis on
work-based learning which is undertaken both within the College Clinic and on a clinical

Funding Your Study
Do you want to gain a Higher Education qualification but have concerns over the cost of your
studies? Don’t worry. There are a range of options available to you to help you.
Full-time students from England, can apply for a Tuition Fee
Loan for the full cost amount. Part-time learners can also get a
tuition loan, provided your course is studied at a rate of at least
25 per cent of an equivalent full-time course each year.
You can apply for student finance online - and all Fee Loans are
paid directly to your University or College.
Student loans - to cover the costs of studying,
you can apply for:

A Maintenance Loan for living costs like rent
(full-time students only)
A Maintenance Grant if your household income is less than
£42,620 (full-time students only)
Scholarships and bursaries from Colleges and Universities
Extra financial help if you have a disability or children or
adults depending on you
Students starting courses at private Colleges and
Universities will be able to get tuition loans:
• Up to £5,500 for full-time courses
• Up to £4,500 for part-time courses
Paying Back your Loan:
Under current legislation, you won’t have to begin paying back
your student loan until you earn more than £21,000 per year.
You’ll be charged interest on your loan from the time you get
your first payment until you repay the loan in full. The amount
you pay back will depend on how much you earn.
The interest on your loan is calculated based on the current
rate of inflation + up to 3% (depending on your earnings).
Part-time students will start repaying their loan in the April
four years after the start of their course or the April after they
leave their course, whichever comes first.
If your income falls below £21,000 a year,
your repayments stop.
If you leave your course early you need to repay
a percentage of the Tuition Fee Loan for that year.
The percentages are:
• 25% during term one
• 50% during term two
• 100% during term three
24+ Loans Advanced Learning Loans
As of 1st August 2013, courses at level 3 and above are not
funded for those aged 24 and over, so students will either
have to apply for an Advanced Learning Loan to cover their
course fees, or pay the fees out of their income or savings.
The Advanced Learning Loan can be used to pay for up to
a maximum of four A-levels (A2 and AS levels); Access to
HE Diploma; Level 3 Certificates; Level 3 Diplomas; Level 4
Certificates; Level 4 Diplomas; Advanced Apprenticeships;
and Higher Apprenticeships.
Applications should be made via the Student Loans Company
(SLC) via www.slc.co.uk, and a loan will be available up to
a maximum of 100% of the fee rate. For students whose
qualifications are eligible for funding by the Higher Education
Funding Council (HEFCE) – e.g. Foundation Degrees – learners
will be able to make two separate loan applications for the
further education (FE) and higher education (HE) elements of
their Higher Apprenticeship.
Loan repayments only start when you begin to earn more
than £21,000 per annum. Students who fund their place on
an Access to Higher Education (HE) course via an Advanced
Learning Loan will NOT be required to repay the loan if they
progress onto and successfully complete a higher education
course – i.e. a foundation degree or degree course.
Grants
Grants are available to full-time students to help with living
and study costs and you don’t pay grants back. You can
apply for a Maintenance Grant or Special Support Grant and
there is also extra help for disabled students and those with
dependent children or adults. A Bursary may also be available
from Staffordshire University for students from low income
households - this money helps to pay for your living costs
and tuition fees and you don’t have to pay it back.
To cover your living costs, full-time students from England
can apply for a:
• Maintenance Loan of up to £5,500
• Maintenance Grant of up to £3,387
The amount you get will depend on:
• Your household income
• Whether you live with your parents
• Whether you live in London
Maintenance Grants don’t have to be paid back but you do
have to pay back a Maintenance Loan.

If you’re studying at our Cannock Campus then you
are quite literally a stone’s throw away from the bus
station, (its just a few footsteps away). As with all of our
campuses, there is also easy access via train and road. Trains
to Birmingham generally run hourly and prices are cheap
when compared to many other services around the country.
Located just a few minutes off the M42 J10, our Tamworth
campus is also just a 5 minute walk from the train station and
town centre bus stops, both of which have direct routes from
Birmingham. If you’re travelling by road, then you can reach
Birmingham in just 20 minutes.
Lichfield has two rail stations (Lichfield City and Trent Valley)
and regular trains to Birmingham, a journey which only takes
around 40 minutes. There is also easy access to Lichfield via bus
and car. In fact, The A38 and A5 meet in Lichfield and provide
direct access to the Midlands motorway network: M42, M50,
M40, M5/M6, and M1.
Our Rodbaston Campus is just a short walk away from the
town of Penkridge where you’ll find a train station that runs
hourly trains to Stafford and Wolverhampton. A journey to
Stafford takes just 5 minutes and Wolverhampton a little over
10 minutes. If you’re travelling by car, we’re also based just a
3 minute drive from the M6 motorway, so you’re also within
easy reach of Birmingham.

Want to spend your down time discovering new
activities? We’re ideally located. The thrill seekers
amongst you may want to visit Drayton Manor Park in
Tamworth, or give snowboarding a try at the UKs first
full-size, real snow indoor ski slope, the Snowdome.
Both Tamworth and Cannock also have cinemas,
bowling alleys and leisure centres, all of which are easy
to access via car or public transport. If you’d rather
spend your leisure time enjoying some retail therapy,
then there are also plenty of shops to explore too.
From small hidden gems in Lichfield and Penkridge,
to well known brands like New Look and JD Sports.

natural beauty of our 180 hectare Rodbaston Estate are
all easy to reach and explore.
