looks developing more and more in the future.

October 11th was a fine autumn
day in Uonuma City, Niigata. The
show was held at the JA Kita Uonuma
headquarters. Acceptance of the entries
for the show started early in the morning. The examination of entries began
at 9:15 a.m. and ended by 11:00 a.m.
A Taisho Sanshoku of over 70 Bu
entered by Mr. Shinji Murata, won the
victory over the other 265 entries.
Many visitors’ eyes were captured by
its magnificent figure, pattern of Hi
markings, and lustrous Sumi markings
studded at exquisite points. This is the
third straight victory of Mr. Murata to
win the grand championship in this
show.
There was a new event, labeled as
“The 1st Uonuma Koi Exhibition”,
where the total number of seven koi
farms, Kanezo, Saito, Suzusei,
Ta z a w a , M a r u s e n K o b a y a s h i ,
Yamaguchi and Wada, displayed their
characteristic koi.

The 6th Okakan Koi Exhibition
was held on November the 1st, which
is an event to provide an opportunity
to let people appreciate brand-name
koi of Odakan’s choice.
An announcement that well-known
koi farms would display their koi all at
one time for the exhibition seemed to
succeed in gathering many visitors, not
only from Tokyo and its vicinity, but
also from abroad. The farms of Sakai,
Dainichi, Okayama Momotaro,
Tamaura, Omosako, Maruyama, Ueno,
Bepu, and Koi-no-minuma took part in
the exhibition.
As the koi on display were introduced on Odakan’s website in advance, many labels with the names of
buyers-would-be on were attached to
the pictures of some koi which could
gain high popularity. People who attended on that day began to put labels
on the certificates in a hurry, and the
certificates of popular koi were found
filled with tags immediately. Lucky
persons who were called their names
in the lottery were crying with joy.

Yokohama Cup Koi Show 2014
& Nishikigoi Seminar
An annual koi show full of events!
The show & seminar were held on the 23rd of September. All the entries for
the show are the Tosai, sold at the Yokohama Nishikigoi’s sale on July 21 this
year, and raised in the same conditions by Yokohama Nishikigoi for two
months. Yokohama Nishikigoi offers prize money, 100,000 yen for the grand
champion and 20,000 yen for the runner-up.
Three regular customers of Yokohama Nishikigoi, Mr. Kaneko, Mr.
Morinaga and Mr. Yagi were charged as judges. The grand championship went to a Taniguchi-bred Kohaku, entered by Mr. Kitamura. Since
Mr. Kitamura arrived a little late for the award ceremony, he looked
confused at first, then soon came back beaming with joy by the time
he received the trophy and prize.
As might have been expected of a koi dealer, there were a wide
variety of entries in the show. Seeing a beautiful Ginrin Ki
Utsuri, the writer unconsciously said, “An entry of this kind is
very rare, isn’t it?” However, some participants said with
smiling faces, “Oh, is that so? We often see that variety
here.” They said they enjoy the growing manner of
koi which they selected among a wide range of varieties.
After the contest, most visitors moved to the
Nishikigoi seminar, where they received detailed instructions on how to appreciate “Kawarigoi” according to
their growth, along with plentiful photo slides.
After the seminar, some people returned to the shop and
enjoyed viewing and buying some koi. Everyone seemed
to have enjoyed the event by participating in the koi

show, the seminar, and koi hunting.
