The 15th annual Public Safety Appreciation Week began with the kick-off breakfast
honoring public safety personnel at Cobb Galleria Centre Monday, Oct. 6.
Cobb County Police Officer Charles Vill (above center) was awarded the Medal
of Valor, the highest award recognizing an individual for an act of bravery in a lifethreatening situation. In February, Vill was shot five times by the driver of a vehicle he
pulled over. Despite being seriously wounded, he maintained his tactical awareness. He
acted quickly, moving to cover out of the line of fire, maintained control and provided clear
and accurate descriptions and directions over the radio which ultimately led to the capture
of his assailant.
Acworth Police Department Agent Kyle Arnold (above left) was named the Public
Safety Employee of the Year. Arnold, currently assigned to MCS Narcotics, is one of the
first entry officers when serving high risk warrants. This year alone, he has participated in
the service of 15 to 20 high risk warrants. Arnold has handled major drug cases with highlevel drug dealers.
Marietta Police Officer Paul Reynolds won the 2014 Award of Merit. In January,
Reynolds provided emergency treatment to a seven-month pregnant woman suffering from
a gunshot wound to the leg. His tourniquet not only stopped the bleeding, but moved her
broken femur back into place.
Smyrna Police Officers Tom Rooney was also honored with the Award of Merit for his
actions during an apartment fire where he
went door-to-door, evacuating people from
the building. His actions were credited with
saving at least 17 lives.
Cobb County Police Det. Tom Bastis
won the Distinguished Achievement Award,
which recognizes an individual whose
service and performance has exceeded the
realm of the job. Bastis has worked for the
Cobb County Police Department since 2003,
serving more than five-and-a-half of those
years within the Crimes Against Children
Unit.
Public Safety Appreciation Week, which
runs through Oct. 12, is sponsored by the
Cobb County of Chamber of Commerce. For

MARIETTA PILGRIMAGE HOME TOUR
December 6 & 7, 2014
Go behind closed
doors as Marietta puts
on its holiday finery
for the 27th Annual
Marietta Pilgrimage
Christmas
Home
Tour. What does it
take to produce the
tour? More than 3,000
ornaments, thousands
of magnolia leaves,
500-plus strands of
lights and over 100
poinsettias are used in
decorating the houses.
A half a dozen or more
hotel rooms are booked
for homeowners for
the event weekend to clear the way for the 5,000 or so visitors who will ooh and ah over
vintage, traditional and highly artistic holiday schemes. Dozens of plastic mats are stashed
in closets in case of inclement weather and scads of booties are stowed in attics to cover
shoes for treading on floors that need extra TLC. Not to mention over 500 volunteers to
staff the event.
The Marietta Pilgrimage Christmas Home Tour features six private historic homes
in the Northwest Marietta/Kennesaw Avenue Historic District, lovingly restored, filled
with antique collections and decorated for the season. Homeowners invite you inside for
a unique opportunity to discover how they incorporate these historic treasures into their
everyday lives. Along the route, many of Marietta’s historic public buildings are decorated
and open for touring.
The home tours kick-off on Saturday, December 6 with the Day Tour offered from
9:00am – 6:00pm and a Candlelight Tour featuring three of the tour homes from 7:00pm
– 9:30pm Saturday evening. The Day Tour will resume on Sunday, December 7 from
10:00am – 6:00pm. The day tours offer shuttle service staffed with informative step-on
guides. Along the tour, guests can warm up and enjoy refreshments or a light lunch at The
Bistro. The Bistro gives guests an opportunity to warm up and enjoy refreshment during the
tour. It is conveniently positioned along the tour route.

Home Tour, call the Marietta Visitors Bureau at 770-429-1115, or 800-835-0445 or visit

MOTIVATING STUDENTS TO READ
How do you motivate a grade-schooler to sit and read a book? By giving them a space
all their own! The Kiwanis Club of Marietta is in the process of building four Reading
Oasis sites at local Marietta elementary schools. As a part of their overall Graduate Marietta
initiative, these quiet corners will be tailor-made for reading using rugs, beanbag chairs and
shelves overflowing with over 700 books.
In a partnership with Scholastic, the Kiwanis Club of Marietta is not only funding
the entire project, but is also providing the volunteer labor to build out the space. Even
more special are the murals that will be hand painted by longtime Kiwanian and artist Dee
Allison. The overall theme will come to life with visions of desert tents, camels and sand
dunes. The first installation will be in the library of Lockheed Elementary School, with
Dunleith Elementary and the James T. Anderson Boys and Girls Club in Marietta to follow.
A fourth location is in the works.
The Graduate Marietta initiative is a major emphasis for the Kiwanis Club of Marietta
and encompasses all grades – from early education to high school. Does helping children
succeed appeal to you? If so, the Kiwanis Club of Marietta is the place for you! Please
contact Pat Huey (executivedirector@mariettakiwanis.org) with the Kiwanis Club of
Marietta for membership information.

Stuff-A-Bus
Is that Santa’s sleigh
or a Cobb County Transit
bus? Cobb Christmas
partners
with
Cobb
County Department of
Transportation and Cobb
Community Transit (CCT) to create the county’s most unique and memorable holiday
program, Stuff-A-Bus. Think of Stuff-A-Bus as the opposite of Santa’s sleigh, Santa uses
his sleigh to deliver gifts and Cobb Christmas makes a CCT bus our sleigh for collecting
gifts.
The week prior to Cobb Christmas’ Annual Distribution, a CCT bus travels through
the county to Stuff-A-Bus host sites gathering donations of food and toys. Host sites can be
businesses, schools and other entities that have organized toy and food drives.
This program would not be successful without the help of local businesses, schools,
and other organizations that serve as host sites for Stuff-A-Bus. Volunteers at these locations
organize food and toy drives and begin promoting and collecting in November. A Cobb
Christmas representative schedules a date and time for the bus to make a stop at their location
to collect the items which have been donated. All donations are stored and transported to
Jim Miller Park—the Cobb Christmas Distribution Site-during distribution week.
When you help to “Stuff-A-Bus” with donations of money, new toys, gifts, nonperishable food items, gift cards or gift certificates, your generosity will brighten the
holidays for hundreds of low-income families.

Marietta Rotary Celebrates
95 Years of Service
On Wednesday evening, October 15, 2014 members of the Rotary Club of Marietta met
at the Marietta Country Club to celebrate our club’s ninety-five years of community service.
With a 1920’s “Speak Easy” theme it was grand affair orchestrated by the talented Mary
Ansley Southerland and her committee - James Eubanks, Morgan McNeel, Buck Northcutt,
Morgan Robertson and Holly Walquist. Over 100 Rotarians and their guests, some dressed
in early twentieth century attire, attended the gala. After a social hour, President Dawn
McEachern welcomed everyone followed by President- Elect James Eubanks, who gave the
invocation. A short program followed that included an amazing video of the accomplishments
of the Rotary Club created by Bruce Hamilton. An excellent meal of steak was served while
members of the Marietta Players, an offshoot of the Young Actors Playhouse directed by
Don Bodner, entertained us. Pictured above l-r Tom and Dawn McEachern and Bill and

Unity of Kennesaw Provides Home for
Spiritually Homeless
Northwest Atlanta is full of a plethora of spiritual centers representing every flavor of
Christianity. But for a sizable group of people living here, this message fails to resonate. These residents often feel like they are spiritual outsiders, souls without a home. Unity of
Kennesaw offers an alternative message which is particularly attractive to those who don’t
connect with other area churches.
“I wanted the same spiritual growth and community opportunities as my more
mainstream Christian neighbors, but the message just didn’t resonate with me. It made
me feel very isolated and alone. When I discovered Unity of Kennesaw, I felt accepted, at
peace and spiritually supercharged by the group worship, “ commented Becky Hedstrom
who drives over an hour to attend services. President, Kathy Cooper says, “We welcome members of all faiths, recognizing the
divine message taught by all mankind’s great spiritual teachers. We focus on personal and
spiritual development, not religious dogma. Wherever you are on your spiritual journey,
you are welcome here.” As a society, we have long recognized the benefits of church attendance. Studies have found
that individuals who regularly attend church had a significantly lower risk of major depression. People who attend religious services, even just sporadically report having an increased sense of
well-being and having happier, more satisfying lives. Chaeyoon Lim, a professor of sociology at the
University of Wisconsin-Madison says that “90% of the correlation between church attendance and
life satisfaction involves close interactions with other around shared religious beliefs.” In a study
by Lim and Robert Putnam further found that people who say they participate in private religious
practices, such as services held at home, were no happier than those who never attend services. The
key factors determining happiness are the social aspect of religion and a shared religious connection
built around identity and belonging.
The diversity of spiritual centers in West Atlanta, including Unity of Kennesaw, is one of the
things that makes this one of the best places in the United States to call home. Find out more about

EXPECTATIONS!
Rev. Sam Storey, Columnist
Expectations…Everybody’s got ‘em. But sometimes dealing with
them can be difficult. A man once asked his good friend why he had never
married? The friend sighed, and said, “Well, I guess I just never met the
right woman… I guess I was always looking for the perfect girl.” “Oh,
come on now,” said his buddy. “Surely you met at least one girl over the
years that you wanted to marry.” “Yes, there was this one girl,” he finally
admitted. “I guess she was the perfect girl… The only perfect girl I ever
really met. She was perfect in every way… I really thought that she was
the perfect girl for me.” “Well, why didn’t you marry her?” The friend
paused, and sadly replied, “Apparently… she was also looking for the
perfect guy.” Now my point is simply this, often times we are the problem;
And a big part of the problem is, again, our expectations.
Remember the cartoon that showed a young boy standing toe-to-toe and nose-to-nose with his
teacher. Behind them was a blackboard covered with unsolved math problems; presumably ones that
the boy had been unable to finish, or do correctly. And in the caption, the boy is saying to his teacher,
“I’m not an underachiever… you’re just an over-expecter!”
Expectations. And they can really get in the way. Sometimes… they can be really hard to deal
with. Just ask Jesus…You see, expectations, especially unmet expectations, were a big problem for
Jesus as well.
In Matthew 11:16-30, Jesus is saying to them: But you just don’t get it, do you? What were you
expecting? You’re like immature children, he says. And then he characterizes their expectations in
this way: We played the flute for you, and yet you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and yet you did
not mourn. John and Jesus were almost polar opposites. The people didn’t like John’s confrontational
attitude whereas Jesus was accessible and understanding. And the people didn’t like that either! It seemed that no matter who God sent, it was never right. Neither John nor Jesus met their
expectations…
The problem, here, is that it’s not supposed to be about our expectations, it’s not about what we
want. Rather, it’s all about what we need so we can be healthy, happy, and well-adjusted. That was
what Jesus was all about. He knew about all the things we want or desire in this life. But he loved us
so much, that he chose not to give us what we wanted; but, instead, to give us what we desperately
needed. Jesus is someone who could take away those heavy burdens that we are always carrying
around on our shoulders. Someone who could give us the peace and rest that we are forever seeking,
but never seem to find. Someone who loves and accepts us for who we are, and then tells us that, no
matter who we are, we are always welcome in His Father’s house. As we find ourselves in the Thanksgiving Season, we recall “the best” Thanksgiving story is what
God has done in the history of humankind. And the best part of “the best” story is that it is our story. It
is a story that tells us “who” we are by telling us “whose” we are. Have a blessed Thanksgiving! (Rev.

GATHER THE GOOD MEMORIES
Dr. Bill Ross, Pastor
First Baptist Church Marietta.
Ecclesiastes 3 talks about the cycle of life; a time to be born and a
time to die, a time to plant and a time to reap, a time to build up and a time
to tear down. Most of you have heard this or read it. A phrase that is a
part of this writing states, “there is a time to gather together and a time to
scatter.” It seems it is written twice. I believe the first time this is written
it is about possessions (called stones). We collect things, we get rid of
things. The second time this is written is something different; I believe the
author is saying there is a time to gather together memories and a time to
scatter memories.
As the holidays approach, many have great memories of Thanksgiving
and Christmas past. Some of those memories inspire us, other memories make life difficult. My hope
for you this holiday season is that you are able to heed the advice of the writer of Ecclesiastes; gather
together the good memories of the past and hold onto them. Allow them to inspire you today. And
let go of the difficult memories of the past and allow them to be scattered. Let those memories go!
Allow them to be in the past and move ahead to the present relationships, family and friends, and
create new memories.
The holidays are coming. Gather together that which inspires and scatter that which impedes
your living. Bill

October 17th was an amazing night for Friday night high-school football. Hillgrove
was having their homecoming, and they were celebrating it with an exciting parade. They
were walking from Still Elementary to Hillgrove High; there were floats, fancy cars, and
even ordinary trucks. You could hear the sound of the band and school spirit in the air. From
the cheerleaders to the students and parents that were cheering us on, it was a very nice sight
because you could see the support of all the schools attending.
For Kemp, our student council theme was “Kemp’s spirit shines bright”. Our student
council members wore bright, neon colors and you could see us for miles. Our music teacher
was kind by letting us borrow huge sun glasses. Our float was covered in bright colors
and beautiful posters that we made. Our mascot, Kempy the cougar was riding in style by
hanging his head out the window like a dog.
Kemps cheer was “Kemp Cougars; Kemp Cougars “and you could hear us the whole
way. For Hillgrove, it was an amazing win 51-21, and we hope the parade becomes a tradition
in our Kemp family. We would like to thank Lauren Baltz, the Hillgrove junior president
and John Cain from the English Department at Hillgrove for inviting Kemp to attend.

Kemp Elementary has a community garden that needed saving. It had lots of weeds,
needed mulch, and most of the plants were over grown. That was just a few problems that
our garden had. A group of 4th grade students
at Kemp Elementary decided to put a plan of
action in place. We began with a work in the
garden day.
When Sunday, October 19 came, a lot needed
to be done. We pulled tons of weeds. We tore up our
stone walk way to put mulch down. We cut down a
peach tree that had diseases. Kemp Elementary was

task we put our minds to by taking time to talk to 4th grade students.

STILL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NEWS
Still Elementary recently hosted the Boosterthon Fun Run sponsored by the brand new
Still Elementary Foundation. In the week leading up to the Fun Run, students attended pep
rallies each day during the last few minutes of their specials where they learned how to be
leaders in their community, earned prizes simply for logging in to the Boosterthon website,
and got pledges from family and friends to support them during the run. All profits earned
from our Fun Run will go to support Stephen Covey’s “Leader In Me” initiative at Still
Elementary. While the grand total is not yet determined, the Still Elementary Foundation
would like to thank the Administrators, Staff, students, parents and community members
for making this event such a huge success. Pictured: Still students doing warm-up exercises
