Since much of the content is carried over from week to week during the month, all new, updated, or urgent content will have the main header in RED. This will make is easier for those of you who are extremely busy to see the changes from week to week. Feel free to forward this update on to your family and friends! Thanks in advance! For those of you who would like to share your comments on any of our activities please use our Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/German-American-Central-Society-Inc/111237502243602 Editor’s Comments: Sound of Music at the Lindenhof Hats off to our Music and Culture Committee for sponsoring the Peoria Players performing songs from their version of the Sound of Music. The Lindenhof was standing room only for this outstanding event. Hopefully, we will host more of these types of events. Hickory Grove Clean Up! Thank you to all of you who braved the cold weather this past Sunday to help close Hickory Grove Park for the season. Eric Franken and Mike Barr watching the last pile of leaves burn down. German Speaking Stammtisch Nights to Begin in January!! The Music and Culture Committee will be hosting Stammtisch Nights the second Friday of the Month at the Lindenhof. One or more tables will be devoted to those who want to practice and/or learn to speak more German. More details in the future. Stammtisch is an informal group meeting held on a regular basis, and also the usually large, often round table around which the group meets. A Stammtisch is not a structured meeting, but rather a friendly get-together. Kristkindlmarkt to be part of Shop Local Initiative http://www.pjstar.com/article/20141113/NEWS/141119490/11669/NEWS I’m extremely excited about this chance to reach more folks as to our Kristkindlmarkt for Small Business Saturday. The county and city will create a shopping guide with a map and listing of all the businesses participating in the “buy local” initiative for Thanksgiving weekend, she said. The map and guide will be available online as well as in a Nov. 23 ad in the Journal Star. As part of the promotion someone will be getting a gift certificate for two dinners to the Lindenhof (thanks Julie Brown). Also, on that Saturday for every slice of strudel we sell, our customers will get a complimentary cup of coffee or hot chocolate! Besides this special promotion, on Saturday, November 30th radio station WGLO 95.5 will be at the Lindenhof from 11am to noon for a live remote. Radio ads should begin on 95.5 sometime next week as well as the week of December 8th. I will be appearing on WMBD at 4 pm on Thursday, November 20th for their Living Well program to promote the Kristkindlmarkt. In addition, you can see me Tuesday, November 25th on WMBD’s morning show at 6:40 am and on Monday, November 24th on WEEK TV. Not sure what time. These promotions should ensure that we have a great Kristkindlmarkt this year! History of the Advent Calendar The origin of the Advent Calendar can be traced back to the 19th. Century. The first styles came from the protestant area. So religious families made a chalk line for every day in December until Christmas Eve. The first known Advent Calendar which was made by handwork is from the year 1851. Other early styles were the Adventclock or the Adventcandle - a candle for each of the 24 days until Christmas, like todays Advent wreath. So in religious families little pictures were hang up on the wall - one for each day in December. An other tradition was to paint chalk strokes on the door, one per day until Christmas Eve. In 1902 a Christian Bookshop in Hamburg published a Christmas Clock which was very similar to that published 1922 by the St. Johannis printing company. (Dominik Wunderlin, lic.phil. Swizzerland). The Austrian (NÖ) Landesmuseum is giving the year 1903 as the year of the first printed Advent Calendar. In 1904 an Advent Calendar was inserted in the newspaper "Neues Tagblatt Stuttgart" as a gift for their readers. In contrast to the above Esther Gajek says that the first printed speciem was made in 1908 by a Swabian parishioner, Gerhard Lang (born 1881 in Maulbronn, Germany -died in 1974). When he was a child his mother made him an Advent Calendar with 24 "Wibbele" (little candies) which were sticked on a cardboard. Free German Books Available! Christkindl Beers While in Florida last year I came across a couple of beers made just for the Christkindlmarkt. Both beers are made in Germany. I don’t think either of these beers are available in Peoria, but there are other winter bocks and winter beers out there that are great for sipping on a cold Winter’s Night! WEISSENOHE MONK’S CHRISTKINDL KLOSTERBRAUEREI WEISSENOHE • GERMANY For centuries, German brewers have crafted special beers to celebrate Christmas (Weihnachten) and the coming of winter. Expressions of holiday cheer, as well as sustenance during the darkest days of the year, these festive brews have always been a bit maltier and richer than typical year-round beers. Every December, The brewers of Klosterbrauerei Weissenohe welcome merrymakers to the grounds of the monastery. For those stranded elsewhere during the holidays, savoring this special dark lager is the next best thing to being there. At Weissenohe the Reinheitsgebot (the famous Bavarian beer purity law) is still observed, and the beer is made by the traditional, and painstaking, doubledecoction method, which is only rarely observed in Bavaria today. Urban Winkler’s brewing methods have been handed down to him from earlier generations of brewmasters at Weissenohe, and refined in accordance with the teachings of older brew-masters in the area. Franconians, a famously stubborn and uncompromising people, still support almost 300 small breweries in their tiny corner of Bavaria, and have kept the old ways even as breweries in the rest of Bavaria modernize, stream-line, and forget. http://www.sheltonbrothers.com/beers/weissenohe-monkschristkindl/ http://www.klosterbrauerei-weissenohe.de/ MAHR’S CHRISTMAS BOCK MAHR'S BRÄU • GERMANY Well, Ho-ho-freakin’-ho! There is no better Christmas beer in Germany than this one from famous Mahr’s-Bräu, in beautiful baroque Bamberg – Germany’s renowned city of craft breweries. Not too sweet, nicely balanced with a delicate hop bitterness, this is a bock beer that you can drink forever . . . Darker and hoppier than the brewery’s regular bock, this robust, flavorful bock was brewed especially for the holiday season. This is a brand-new offering from Mahr’s that sold out in two hours at the brewery. In the words of Stephan Michel, the brewer, “Dude. It’s killer.” Only a few hundred cases were produced for the USA, so get it while you can. Mahr’s is a rare example of artisanal brewing in a land of increased mass production, consolidation, and narrowing of popular tastes. A larger brewery simply could not make beer like this – unfiltered, unpasteurized, and bursting with flavor. There is no cutting corners or economy-of-scale at Mahr’s. The beers are naturally more expensive as German beers go, but beer drinkers always get more than their money’s worth. The Mahr’s “gasthaus” – built in 1670 – is one of the great places in the world to have a beer. http://www.sheltonbrothers.com/beers/mahrs-christmas-bock/ http://www.mahrs.de/en/# 12 BEERS OF CHRISTMAS http://theaposition.com/tombedell/golf/lifestyle/4806/12-beers-of-christmas-1anchor-our-special-ale-2013 Cooking with Beer – from the Costco Connection Cooking with beer is another way to bridge flavors of beer and food. Beer elevates batters and biscuits with carbonation, can feed the yeast in leavened breads, glaze meats and roasted poultry, stand in for sour vinegars in dressings and marinades, and add malt sweetness to sauces desserts and more. Beer and cheese are natural partners as both are fermented foods, and creamy, buttery tastes amplify with carbonation and hops. Beer can enhance the flavor and health of barbequed foods. Marinades made with dark beer protect meats from forming dangerous compounds such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). A study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that marinating pork in a stout or other black ale four hours before grilling over charcoal reduced PAHS by as much as 53 percent. Also, beer is less acidic than vinegar or citrus juice, so it won’t break down the meat texture as quickly. Yet the citrus, fruity or spicy aromatics of hops vanish with too much heat. Add small amounts of hoppy beer at the end of the cooking or right before serving. Malty styles such as stout or porters, may be simmered over low heat. Experiment with recipes from American brewers and chefs found in cookbooks, blogs such as www.foodlovesbeermagazine.com and breweries such as Alaskan Brewing Company, which maintains a database based on employee potlucks and home cooking. Cheers to beer because beer is food! - LS Craft beer made in Germany!! https://www.deutschland.de/en/topic/life/lifestyle-cuisine/craft-beer-made-in-germany Gluhwein Recipes: Gluhwein is at Kristkindlmarkt tradition. Gluhwein can be made in a number of ways. Typically it starts with an inexpensive red or white wine. Additional spices and fruits are then added. Probably the key in my opinion is the sugar. The Gluhwein needs just the right amount of sugar to make it not too sweet, with a slight bit of tartness. The secret ingredient of Gluhwein made in Nurnberg, Germany is blueberry juice. Yes! Blueberry juice. This caught me by surprise as well, since none of the recipes below use this. http://www.justhungry.com/2006/12/recipe_gluhwein_mulled_wine_fo.html http://www.gluhwein.net/recipes.html http://www.ehow.com/how_4688592_gluhwein-recipes.html http://dreamingofwinter.blogspot.com/2009/08/gluhwein-recipe.html http://www.food.com/recipe/gluhwein-189322 http://www.bigoven.com/recipe/124325/traditional-gluhwein http://www.cooks.com/rec/view/0,1918,148185-246196,00.html http://www.cooks.com/rec/view/0,1718,153178-249199,00.html http://www.cooks.com/rec/view/0,173,153179-248199,00.html http://www.cooks.com/rec/view/0,1718,153179-249199,00.html http://www.cooks.com/rec/doc/0,1718,152178-248198,00.html http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art25534.asp http://german.about.com/library/blrezept_gluehwein.htm German Immigration Below is an excellent link pertaining to German Immigration to the US.
