GOVERNOR'S MESSAGE December, 2014
LOUIS SARAVOLATZ, MD, MACP GOVERNOR, MICHIGAN CHAPTER 2014-2018 GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE December, 2014 Dear Colleagues, It was great to see many of you at Tree Tops this year for our annual Chapter meeting on October 17-19. This year’s meeting was clearly one of our best. The program co-directors Drs. Paul Grant, Mark Mcquillan, and Sarah Hartley provided outstanding leadership in setting the bar quite high for future meetings. Feedback on the quality of the meeting rated sessions as very high and many of you complemented the speakers as being as good as the national IM meeting. Dr. Grant has completed his third year as one of the program directors and is succeeded by Dr. Leonard Johnson from St John Hospital in working with Mark and Sarah for 2015. The program still had many of the previous favorite sessions including the Professors-in-Action led by Eric Scher, MD, MACP and the Thieves Market with David Scrase, MD, FACP. We also had three SEP modules that provided 30 MOC points for the participants who completed the required submissions to the ABIM. This year our named lectures were given by Tom Lalonde, MD, FACP from St John Hospital who gave the Boy Frame Lecture on Contemporary Treatment of Aortic Stenosis: Focus on TAVR and James Wilson, MD, from the University of Pennsylvania who presented a mesmerizing Park Willis Lecture on Human Gene Therapy: How it will Impact the Practice of Medicine. We also had Susan Hingle, MD, FACP from Illinois as our College Representative who participated with Laura Carravallah, MD, FACP and Martha Gray, MD, FACP on the Advocacy Session and addressed many burning issues for our members. She also presented us with the Chapter Excellence Award at the Awards Ceremony which had record attendance honoring our many distinguished members. The attendance this year was 419 which exceeded last years. Noteworthy was our record attendance of 61 medical students and medical student participation with 38 posters. Lynda Misra, DO, MEd, FACP, and her medical student committee along with the clerkship directors again provided a great student program www.acpmichigan.org page 1 There were many other outstanding sessions that were held and again highlighted the wonderful learning environment our chapter provides for our members. Bringing us back to reality was the ABIM and the onerous task MOC has provided for our members. The national ACP under Steve Weinberger, MD, FACP, has been advocating intensely with the ABIM to address member concerns. There is some progress in reducing fees for repeat takers and establishing a committee of internists who will provide feedback on the secure exam relevance. In addition the ACP has provided a letter indicating that the MOC should NOT be used for maintenance of licensure, by insurance companies to determine reimbursement or by hospitals for credentialing. More work still needs to be done in this area but progress is being made. Thea Lockard continues to provide the support for the Chapter and I am very appreciative of all of her work and the wonderful team she assembled for the meeting at Tree Tops. As we look forward to this year Raymond Hilu, MD, FACP, Program Director as St John Hospital is working hard on the planning of our “Residents Meeting” for May 22, 2015. The meeting will be held at the Marriott Hotel in Troy. I would encourage all of you to mark your calendars for September 2527, 2015 at the Grand Traverse Resort for our Chapter meeting next fall. This is a wonderful venue with great opportunities to enjoy a great scientific meeting and families to appreciate the beauty of Northern Michigan at its best. I hope you all remain well and appreciate God’s blessings during the upcoming holidays. I look forward to continuing to serve you as your governor. Kindest Regards, Louis Saravolatz Louis D.
