Drash v'DaSh: A Shabbat-Chanuka Message and Greeting
“Taking It Home With Us”
After confiscating several pounds of an illegal substance of the cannabis
variety during a police investigation, California officer Joe Shmoe (the last
name has been changed to protect this innocent author from getting sued)
decided to take his “work” home with him instead of booking it into
evidence. There he apparently used it only to “train his dog” (for the canine
Olympics in Woodstock?) and is unlikely to face criminal charges for the
unauthorized possession.
Lehavdil be-elef alfei havdalot – with thousands upon thousands of
degrees of separation – on Chanuka we are bidden to “take our work
home with us”. Ordinarily, our Avoda - literally “work”, but also refers to
ritual “worship” – is optimally performed in the Beit Knesset, in the
sanctuary of the synagogue. Though a “menora” is a common year-round
fixture in our temples, on Chanuka, we have a mandate of ner ish u-beto,
to light the menora specifically at our homes. (The notion of mehadrin min
ha-mehadrin – that the number of lights corresponds in some measure to
the number of people in the household – further underscores the
connection to our family.) Indeed, after Rabbi Yosef Karo records in his
Shulchan Arukh the practice to kindle the Chanuka lights in shul, Rabbi
Moshe Isserles (Rema) observes that notwithstanding the recitation of the
blessing, no one fulfills his/her obligation with the lighting in the
synagogue. This is all the more surprising when one considers that the
primary miracles of Chanuka – the reclamation of the Beit Hamikdash from
the hands of the Greco-Syrians, the purification and rededication of the
facility, and the supernatural lasting of a one-day supply of olive oil for
seven days all took place in the confines of the Holy Temple, whose
modern-day mirror is our Mikdash Me’at – the contemporary synagogue.
Truth be told, there was another miracle that was even more miraculous
than any of the aforementioned ones, and a victory even more victorious
than the military triumph of the Hasmoneans. At risk was the religious
essence of the Jewish people, their spiritual substance. Hellenistic
ideologies threatened to supplant Jewish identity. The ultimate test of filial
fidelity was the transmission of tradition in the Jewish family, and so we
keep that flame alive with the “Torah Or” illuminating our homes.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Lawrence Teitelman

The Park Page Puzzle
“Yesh kan Kohen…”
This week’s Puzzle: In which two places in Sefer Bereshit is “Kohen”
mentioned? Where in the Torah does a “regular” Kohen (in the sense
of Aaron’s family) first appear?
Solution to last week’s Puzzle: Vayma’en (=”he refused”) appears
three times in Sefer Bereshit: Jacob refused to be comforted for the
presumed death of Joseph (37:35), Joseph refused the advances of
Potiphar's wife (39:8), and Jacob refused to accept Joseph's
correction when blessing his two sons (48:19)
