Today’s Greeter is Marie Peterson. Join Rabbi Chaitovsky for his Spring/Summer Shabbat Afternoon Torah Study Every week an hour before Mincha in the Chapel. Today’s class will be at 6:00 PM. Why Eat Matzah? Simple Question, Complex Answer! Make Your Reservations NOW! The maftir reading for Shabbat Parah, Numbers 19:1-22, deals with the red heifer whose ashes were combined with water to ritually purify anyone who had been in contact with a dead person. Because only people who were pure could eat from the Passover sacrifice, a public announcement right before Nisan reminded anyone who had become impure to purify themselves before making the Passover pilgrimage to Jerusalem. In the haftarah for Parashat Parah, Ezekiel berates the people for defiling the House of Israel and taking God’s name in vain. Their disrespect for God caused their exile and dispersion. Connection to the Maftir: Just as the maftir aliyah for Parashat Parah presents an ancient rite of detoxification for those who have come in contact with the dead, the haftarah explains how Israel will be purified by God and in fact brought back to life with a new heart and a new spirit. BIRTHDAYS Joshua Baraban, Robin Chotin, William Gold, Paul Goldstein, Phillip Hirsch, Isaac Koll, Marcee Kutner, Eudice Lewkowitz, Evelyn Male, Barry Mannes, Lev Raizman, Rachel ,Romer, Shelley Rotenberg, Beverly Silver anniversarieS Samuel & Paula Burger—35 Refuah sheleima: speedy recovery www.bmh-bj.org PARSHA SUMMARY On the eighth day, following the seven days of their inauguration, Aaron and his sons begin to officiate as kohanim (priests); a fire issues forth from God to consume the offerings on the altar and the divine presence comes to dwell in the Sanctuary. Aaron’s two elder sons, Nadav and Avihu, offer a “strange fire before God, which He commanded them not” and die before God. Aaron is silent in the face of his tragedy. Moses and Aaron subsequently disagree as to a point of law regarding the offerings, but Moses concedes to Aaron that Aaron is in the right. God commands the kosher laws, identifying the animal species permissible and forbidden for consumption. Land animals may be eaten only if they have split hooves and also chew their cud; fish must have fins and scales; a list of non-kosher birds is given, and a list of kosher insects (four types of locusts). Also in Shemini are some of the laws of ritual purity, including the purifying power of the mikvah (a pool of water meeting specified qualifications) and the well spring. Thus the people of Israel are enjoined to “differentiate between the impure and the pure.” WEEKLY TORAH STUDY ►613 Mitzvot - Monday 8:00 pm - Rabbi Stern ►Torah Class - Wednesday after Shacharit 7:30 am with Cantor Lichterman ►Taste of Torah - Saturday 10:00 am - Essie Fleischmann ►Daf-Yomi one hour before Shacharit - Rabbi Fleischmann ►Law, Legend & Lore - Daily before Maariv with Rabbi Chaitovsky ►Ten-Minutes of Text - Shabbat at Seudah Shelishit with Rabbi Chaitovsky Please do not hesitate to contact these people.
