Tupas defends Green Core contract
By Louine Hope Conserva
FORMER Iloilo governor
Niel Tupas Sr. said he did not
personally gain from a controversial contract with an independent power producer.
Tupas said his administration followed to the letter the electric power
purchase agreement they entered with
Green Core Geothermal, Inc.
Tupas made the reaction after the
Office of the Ombudsman indicted
him and three other capitol officials for
graft for allegedly overpaying some P4
million to Green Core for unconsumed
electricity.
The power purchase deal was meant
to energize the proposed Iloilo MultiPurpose Convention Center (IMPCC)
which did not materialize.

DOH: Beware
of toxic toys

THE Department of Health (DOH-6) reminded Christmas shoppers to be careful in buying toys for kids as these might be laced
with toxic materials.
Delia Tarroza, chief of the DOH-6’s Regulatory and Licensing Enforcement Division, said consumers must be aware of the
materials used in toys they will buy.
“Nowadays, many parents and gift givers aren’t aware of the
dangers posed by these innocent-looking playthings,” Tarroza said
DOH-6 Chief Regulatory and Licensing Enforcement Division,
Delia Tarroza said.
Tarroza particularly warned against toys that may cause choking, strangulation, laceration, poking and chemical exposure risks
to young children. The DOH official said many toys in the market today contain

ICPO: 7 La Paz villages
cleared of illegal drugs
By Wenceslao E. Mateo Jr.
ILOILO City police director Senior Supt. Ruperto Floro said they are finished with the illegal
drug-clearing activities in 7 barangays of La Paz
district.
Floro said they are now eyeing to clear another
group of barangays in January 2015.
“We are through with the 7 barangays of La
Paz. In fact, we will already hold a culminating
program by next week at La Paz Plaza to mark
our successful operation. PNP regional director
Josephus Angan will be our special guest,” he
said.
The 7 barangays are Aguinaldo (the barangay of Liga ng mga Barangay president Carlos
Guarin), Rizal, Railway, McArthur, Divinagracia,
Alalasan, and Punong.
Asked for their next target barangays next
year, Floro said in jest: “Secret!”
“It could be any group of barangays known
to be drug-affected. We will reveal them later,”
he said though.
Under the drug-clearing campaign, city cops
are assigned to monitor the movements of every
suspected drug personality in the target barangays.
The move aims to scare drug personalities
away from the barangay and prevent drug peddling activities.
A barangay may be declared clear of illegal

SWS: 7 out of 10 Pinoys
expect a happy Christmas
MANILA – Just over seven out of
10 Filipinos—71 percent—expect a
happy Christmas this year, a marked
improvement from previous years,
according to a new survey from Social
Weather Stations.
In contrast, sadness this Christmas
is at its lowest since 2003 at six percent. Meanwhile, 23 percent expect the
Yuletide to be neither happy nor sad.
The SWS survey also showed three
out of four or 75 percent said it is better to give this coming Christmas as
against 23 percent who said it is better
to receive.
SWS conducted its fourth quarter
social weather survey from Nov. 27 to
Dec. 1 using face-to-face interviews of
1,800 adults nationwide.
IMPROVEMENT
of Filipinos who expected a happy
Christmas remained at the sixties: 64
percent in 2004, 62 percent in both
2005 and 2006, 64 percent in 2007,
63 percent in 2008, and 64 percent in
2009,” SWS said.
It said the figure recovered to 69
percent in 2010, but fell to 64 percent
in 2011 and 2012, and 62 percent in
2013.
SWS said the 71 percent who expect
a happy Christmas was an improvement from the 62 to 64 percent since
2004.
“The expectation of a happy Christmas was a high 82 percent when the
series started in 2002, but declined
to 77 percent the following year.
From 2004 to 2013, the percentages
SWS said the six percent expecting
a sad Christmas in 2014 represents the
lowest since 2003, when it hit four
percent.
“In 2002 and 2003, only three to
four percent reported having a sad
Christmas, and then increased to 10
percent in 2004. From 2005 to 2010,
This included 300 each in Metro
Manila, Balance Luzon, and Mindanao, and 900 in Visayas.
Sampling error margins of ±2.3%
for national percentages, ±5.7% each
for Metro Manila, Balance Luzon and
Mindanao, and ±3.3% for Visayas,
applied to the survey.
Lowest sadness level
sadness with Christmas fluctuated at
7-10 percent level,” it said.
Christmas sadness peaked at 11
percent in 2011, but fell to 9 percent
in 2012 and 2013.
Better to give than receive
The last time that the percentage of
people who said it is better to give than
to receive hit 75 percent was in 2006,
almost a decade ago.
The SWS said the proportions of
those who say it is better to give than
to receive this Christmas are high
across all areas and socio-demographic
groups.
It said up to 80 percent in Metro Manila and Balance Luzon (81 percent)
say it is better to give than to receive

Boy, 12,
nabbed for
robbery
By Jennifer Ponsaran-Rendon
A 12-YEAR old boy was arrested for
allegedly stealing from a neighbor’s sarisari store in Jaro, Iloilo City Thursday.
Jim (not his real name) said he
planned to rob the store Zone 6, Barangay Sambag to pay for his computer
game rental.
The store owner and his son caught
Jim inside the store around 2:20 a.m.
Thursday.
The boy initially claimed that he was
from Nueva Ecija province. He even
concocted a story that a group of men onboard a van told him to rob the store.
But the driver of the van whom Jim
tagged denied knowing the child.
Jim later revealed that his family used
to reside in Nueva Ecija province but
later relocated to Jaro.
Since the police did not recover any
money or goods from his possession, Jim
was charged for trespass to dwelling.
He was also kept out of jail because
of his age.
Meanwhile, the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) advised residents to ensure
their personal safety and make sure that
the doors and windows of their homes
are securely locked when they go out
shopping.
The reminder is one of top advisory
of the ICPO in leaflets which police
officer distributed to mall and church
goers.
“They should be always on alert,”
said Senior Supt. Ruperto Floro, ICPO
director.
He added that air conditioning unit
shaft should be fully secured as some
child burglars use the hole to enter into
houses.

Trash and more
B
ACOLOD CITY is awash not just
with cash but also with trash. Yesterday I said that something smells
but it is not just the reported hefty “bonus”
that some members of the Sangguniang
Panlungsod reportedly got for the rapid approval of the Real Estate Tax hikes. Three
million pesos of intelligence and therefore
unaccountable funds can really make the SP
move even doing away with legal requireModesto Palacios Sa-onoy ments for such an ordinance. In that sense
the councilors got the cash and lot owners
and developers got the trash.
This is the same SP that approved a
patently disadvantageous contract for the
collection and disposal of the city’s garbage. Under the contract
with Environking, the garbage collector is given P9 million a month
regardless of the volume of garbage collected. So whether it collected ten tons or one ton a month, it is still paid P9 million.
At the beginning it was doing fine but since some months back,
we were already experiencing the rise in uncollected garbage. We
thought it tolerable since the contractor was still adjusting to the
situation although this is ridiculous because Environking should
have studied the garbage situation before it offered to bid. Anyway the people of Bacolod were forbearing; it seems nobody was
complaining anyway.
But garbage is one object and subject that cannot be hid or
covered. It smells. Nevertheless the Environking or the city government did not bother even to cover them so we see them all over.
In fact, I suspect that Environking is not bothered at all. Its contract is to expire and it seems it is not interested in bidding again.
After all whether it collected or not, it gets paid for P9 million.
Or perhaps, is it really getting the full amount of P9 million? Or
does Environking share its fees with somebody who makes things
happen in the Government Center?
A highly reliable source in Manila says that the contractor is already
disgusted because it has to foot this and that bill on demand from powerful personalities in Bacolod. In a way, Environking is just compensating
by cutting cost through scaling down its collection work.
And so we see the results of this anomalous, stinking and disadvantageous contract. Last week I went to the City Library to
research on the Minutes of the session of the Bacolod Municipal
Council of 1906-1909. Since the tricycles are parked right in front
of the library’s gate, I had to park farther west near the Hernaez
entrance of Rizal Elementary School. It was nauseating and I am
certain every kid and teacher that passed through the gate had seen
the pile of uncollected garbage, the swarm of flies and cockroaches
but fortunately not the disease carrying rats. At the school’s Yulo
Street entrance is another mountain of garbage.
Near the Fire Department, in Mambulok, at the Reclamation Area,
Burgos Market, at the Capitol Shopping Center, in Libertad near
UNO-R, at San Juan Street near the LCC Architecture Building, at
the corner of Rizal and San Juan, at Gatuslao near the Andres Bonifacio Elementary School, in Aguinaldo Street behind ABS-CBN, at
North Drive in the Santo Niño Stop – these are only few that I know
to be reeking with garbage. I wonder whether the same situation is
true in our barangays! If this situation is true in the inner city how
much more outside the gaze of visitors and commuters?
Do our city officials also go around even just in their cars to
see what penalty they inflicted on the people for passing this
contract? If they do, they cannot escape the sight of the garbage
because trash is all over the city. They are directly responsible
for this state of affairs for approving a contract that is loaded in
favor of the contractor or whoever is getting a portion of the fees
directly or indirectly.
Sure the councilors are legislators and the burden of monitoring
and supervising the performance of Environking rests with the
Executive. But the disadvantageous contract practically absolves
the executive for not doing anything. After all, the contract does
not impose penalties on Environking for poor performance or for
not collecting all the trash in this city.
If they have been going around, they would have seen these
piles of garbage and demanded performance. Has any member of
the SP at least initiated a move to find out what’s happening?
Indeed we are awash with trash here and there and everywhere
and we are paying over P90 million for them.

Graciano Lopez Jaena
inspires Ilonggo journalists
formed a triumvirate with Dr. Jose Rizal
and Marcel H. del Pilar.
But he became well known for his newspaper, La Solidaridad.
No wonder contemporary journalists
in Iloilo today flood the Western Visayas
community with newspapers.
Almost every freedom-loving and lovers of letters and literature want to become
newspapermen or to own and manage their
own newspaper in the Ilonggo-speaking
populace.
It runs in the Ilonggo blood.
Before he became famous, Lopez Jaena
was first sent by his parents to study at St.
Vincent Ferrer Seminary in Jaro which had
been opened under the administration of
Governor General Carlos María de la Torre
y Nava Cerrada.
In the seminary, he served as a secretary
to Claudio Lopez, his uncle who was the
honorary vice consul of Portugal in Iloilo.
But he had ambitioned to become a physician. Lopez Jaena convinced his parents
that he needed to enrol in a university in
Manila.
“When your time comes to die, be not
like those whose hearts are filled with fear
of death, so that when their time comes
they weep and pray for a little more time
to live their lives over again in a different
way. Sing your death song, and die like a
hero going home.” – Tecumseh
T
HE REASON why
Ilonggos are so
proud and probably
the most-inspired journalists in the country in this
generation is Graciano
Lopez Jaena.
Could the son of Jaro,
Iloilo City, who died in
poverty, have been swallowed by the prevailing system that decimates the moral
fiber of many enterprising journalists had
he lived in today’s generation?
Born on December 18, 1856 and died
on January 20, 1896, Lopez Jaena was not
only an outstanding journalist, but was also
an orator at par with the country’s and even
the Asia’s best.
As the first ilustrado to arrive in Spain
where he started the Propaganda Movement against our Spanish colonizers, Lopez Jaena became revolutionary when he
ADMISSION
He was denied admission at the University of Santo Tomas because he did not have
a Bachelor of Arts degree when he was at
the seminary in Jaro.
Lopez Jaena was appointed to the San
Juan de Dios Hospital as an apprentice.
He eventually dropped out due to financial difficulties and returned to Iloilo.
His assimilation with the poor ignited
his feelings about the injustices common
in that era.
Lopez Jaena’s potentials as a reformer
and writer became apparent at the age of
18 when he wrote the satirical story “Fray
Botod” which depicted a fat and lecherous
priest.
Lopez Jaena ribbed Fray Botod’s false
piety which “always had the Virgin and
God on his lips no matter how unjust and
underhanded his acts are.”
The story was not published, but a copy
circulated widely in Iloilo. The infuriated
friars could not prove that Lopez Jaena was
the author, thus he went off the hook, so to
speak, temporarily.
The son of Jaro refused to testify that
certain prisoners died of natural causes
when it was obvious that they had died at
the hands of the mayor of Pototan town,
thus he was pilloried.
He continued to agitate for justice.

‘Tax deduction
on bonuses legal’
By Dolly Yasa
Bacolod City – The taxes deducted from
the bonuses of the Negros Occidental provincial government employees is mandated
by law through the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), Provincial Accountant Merly
Fortu said Thursday.
Fortu’s statement was in reaction to the
letter sent to her by Dino Gasendo, president of the Progressive Alliance of Capitol
Employees (PACE).
Gasendo asked Fortu the “actual basis
of the computation for tax on bonuses in
accordance with the policy being followed
by the provincial government in reference
to whatever issuances/policies required by
the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) visa-vis on taxes on bonuses.”
Gasendo requested Fortu to “furnish
PACE with the necessary legal basis for
the computation of the accounting office
in the deduction of taxes on employees’
bonuses.”
Fortu pointed out that “badly hit by the
taxes were those in the provincial government-operated district hospitals.”
“Hospital employees have many benefits
that fall under what is called as gross taxable income (GTI) which increases their
income bracket under the BIR regulations,”
she added.
Theses is unlike the employees based
in the Capitol area who has two sources of
income – salaries and overtime pay, thus
they have lower GTIs, she said.
“Those assigned in the hospitals have
additional benefits aside from their salaries
like overtime pay, hazard pay, subsistence
allowance, night shift differential and
PhilHealth allowance,” Fortu said.
Because of the GTI, there are some hospital staff who even have a higher income
than the governor, she added.
Under the BIR regulations all these
items classified as income are taxable,
Fortu said.
On Wednesday, Governor Alfredo Maranon Jr. called on the PACE to prove its
claim that the Negros Occidental provincial
accountant is wrong in her computation of
the taxes imposed on the extra bonuses of
its members
Otherwise the provincial government
may have to pay for a shortfall in tax deductions, he said.
Capitol employees numbering about
2,300 will have P40,000 each in additional
bonus which was released starting December 18.

Fear grips bizmen
after ex-banker slay
By Dolly Yasa
Bacolod City – “Assure us of our
safety and security.”
This was the call of Frank Carbon,
president of the Metro Bacolod Chamber
of Commerce and Industry (MBCCI) after
a former bank manager was gunned down
last Saturday by still unidentified gunmen.
“The private sector wants the Bacolod
City Police Office and the Negros Occidental Provincial Police Office (NOPPO) to do everything to solve the death
of Francisco Loarca,” Carbon said.
He pointed out that no business will
expand in Bacolod and the province, “if
they do not feel secured.”
They should assure not only the
businessmen but especially the general
public, Carbon said.
Loarca, 61, and former manager of
Maybank, was on board his Toyota Rad4
SUV and was about to park near the
East View Hotel here when the gunmen
onboard a motorcycle blocked his way,
shot him four times, and fled.
The victim’s family has sought the

TF Ilahas tags 231 trees in Hinobaan wilderness
BACOLOD City – Task Force Ilahas (TFI),
the environment enforcement unit of the
Provincial Government of Negros Occidental, marked and tagged 231 trees inside the
“wilderness area” of Barangay Damutan,
Hinobaan town.
The trees were tagged with Global Positioning
System coordinates by the TFI personnel during
their follow-up operation from November 19
to 22.
Superintendent Gabriel Gutierrez, TFI
head, said in an inventory report that a total of
70.66 cubic meters or 29,959.84 board feet of
fallen logs, and 1, 128.77 cubic meters or 478,
598.48 board feet of standing trees are inside
the area.
Gutierrez also reported the presence of freshly-cut fallen trees and about one-hectare rice field
inside the forest.
Timber and wildlife poaching are evident, the
TFI report added.
The report also stated that native horn bills
and parrots which lay eggs above the tree tops
were taken by wildlife poachers while cutting
the stems of the trees and harvesting the newlyhatched birds.
The team destroyed nets and foot traps
installed by the poachers, and are also set to
conduct an inventory of the remaining portion
of the area.
In the past months, the TFI discovered 3,000
to 4,000 board feet of illegally cut century old
trees inside the wilderness. Inventory showed the
hotlogs were worth P14 million and P15 million,
respectively.
Marañon strongly condemned the act of cutting down trees and poaching of wildlife inside
the area and agreed to the team’s recommendation
to deputize civilian volunteers as forest guards in
the area to minimize or stop forest degradation.

In the land of our colonizers, Lopez Janea became a

He finally pursued his medical studies at the University of

incurring the ire of Rizal.
Lopez Jaena defended why
he did not finish his medical

In an interview with Aksyon

stressed that the payment included the IMPCC’s power
requirement.
“If we look at the contract,
there is no excess payment.
The contract stipulated the

not push through. The Ombudsman questioned that provision
and eventually became the
basis for determining probable
cause to file cases against us,”
Tupas said.

Tupas said he has yet to
receive the Ombudsman resolution and the one-year suspension meted on provincial
accountant Lyd Tupas, assistant
provincial accountant Sandra
Bionat and General Services
Office head Ramie Salcedo.
Lyd Tupas, Bionat and Salcedo were ordered suspended
for one year after they were
found guilty in the administrative case for conduct prejudicial
to the best interest of the service
and neglect of duty.
Dennis Ventilacion, Iloilo
provincial legal officer, said the
respondents have the option to
either file an appeal or motion
for reconsideration.
He said the order was direct-
ly addressed to the respondents
and the head of implementing

the governor.
“There is an instruction from

Ventilacion.
Ventilacion said the provincial legal office is willing to assist Salcedo and Lyd Tupas after
the two sought their help.

“Parents can use their purchasing power to compel manufacturers to offer toys that are
safe from dangerous ingredients,” Tarroza added.
John Richard Lapascua,
DOH-6’s senior health program
officer, said partygoers must
also be wary of food poisoning
and other sickness stemming
from too much eating.
“That is why moderation
is very important. Just eat the
right amount of food and drink
moderately,” said Lapascua.
Lapascua advised the public
to avoid smoking and drugs,
observe proper diet, drink liquor moderately, get physical
(exercise) and relax.
Ten Filipinos die of smoking
every hour.
“It is not only first-hand
smoking that kills. Exposure to
second-hand smoke is prevalent
as well,” said Lapascua.
Proper diet includes whole
grains, healthy protein, fish,
vegetables, fruits and dairy.
“They say you are what you
eat. Reduce salt, sugar and fats
to prevent hypertension and
heart diseases. Reduce calories
to prevent obesity and increase
fiber intake to lower cholesterol
level,” he said.
Moderation in drinking is a
must, according to Lapascua.
For men, two drinks are
recommended while women are
urged to take one drink.
One drink corresponds to
12 fluid ounces or 355 ml for
beer; 5 fluid ounces or 148 ml
for wine; and 1.5 fluid ounces or
44 ml for distilled spirits.
DOH emphasized that
“stretching your body means
stretching your life.”
Ways to be physically active
include climbing up or going
down the stairs, walking, biking, dancing, gardening and
cleaning the house.
“We can enjoy Christmas
without sacrificing our health,”
Lapascua said.
Farms located in Barangay
Baliwagan, San Enrique, was
surprised to find their office inside the administrative building
already disarray.
Vasquez reported the incident to the police saying that
the suspect entered the building
through the glass window then
destroyed the door knob of the
cashier’s office.
Based on the accounting
report to the police, the suspects stole some P1.3 million cash from the cashier’s
office.
Vargas said their investigation is still ongoing.
Bingawan made an astounding performance in the first set
of the game through the highflying Jocson.
San Rafael tried to steal the
momentum from Bingawan
through better placing games.
The small but terrible Johnrey Miro of Bingawan proved
that volleyball is not just for
taller guys as he controlled
the third set by his impressive
placing which allowed Jocson
to score wicked spikes.
San Rafael’s head coach
advised his players to maintain
and secure their rotations and
positions against Bingawan’s
set plays.
But a miscommunication
led to an empty back court for
San Rafael which spelled their
doom as Bingawan scored the
championship point.

‘Renewable Energy
ideal for PHL’
By Maricyn A. De los Santos
An executive of a power
firm believes that renewable
energy is ideal for an archipelago
like the Philippines.
Mr. Alexander Brasier of the
Energy Renewables Asia, Inc.
said that RE is ideal and practical
for a country with many islands
like the Philippines.
Brasier, who signed a
memorandum of agreement
with the University of San
Agustin for the 660 kWh solar
power project last Wednesday,
said the country has many small
communities with very small
power needs.
“Putting up big power plants
is not practical as it is very
expensive,” he said.
He said RE facilities is both
beneficial to the community and
to the power sector itself.
Aside from energizing small
communities, the electricity
generated from RE facilities
will help reduce the power
dependency during peak hours
or the time when the need for
electricity is at its highest, he
said.
ERA’s commitment with
USA is under the build-leasetransfer scheme. The firm will
put up the facilities, the USA
will pay its monthly power
consumption, and after 15
years, the facility will be owned
by the institution.

NegOcc solon: Reduce
fares in taxis, buses
MANILA – A congressman from Negros Occidental has filed
a petition to lower fares in taxis, buses and UV Express due to
lower diesel prices.
1st district Rep. Manuel Iway filed for the second time a petition
to reduce fares for all public utility vehicles nationwide.
Six oil companies rolled back diesel prices by as much P1.60
for diesel, P1.90 for gasoline and P1.80 for kerosene last December 14.
Oil prices have been steadily declining since June this year.
He based his petition on fare rates history, wherein last December 2008, price of diesel was P34.95 and regular provincial buses
charged commuters P8.50 for the first 5 kilometers while regular
buses plying Metro Manila charged passengers P9.
Since diesel prices are currently at P31.15/liter, Iway asked the
board to reduce fare rates of buses nationwide by at least P2.
For taxis, he asked flagdown rates be reduced to P30 with P2.50
for every succeeding 300 kilometers. (ABS-CBN News)

Probe high airline fares - solon
MANILA – A congressman said the
Congress should investigate why
airline fares are still high during peak
travel season despite the drop in the
prices of fuel products in the world
market.
Bayan Muna party-list Rep. Neri
Colmenares criticized high air fares
despite the drop in prices of fuel.
“Forty percent na ang ibinagsak
ng world market sa presyo. Bumaba
na ang pamasahe sa jeepney at sa iba
pa, pero ‘yung airline na pamasahe ay
hindi pa binababa. In fact, tumataas pa
so dapat imbestigahan ng Kongreso
and we will push for a very serious
investigation of the airlines who refuse
to lower the plane fares despite the sub-
stantial decrease in world prices and in
spite of the dismal services nila,” the
lawmaker said.
Colmenares wants the investigation
when Congress resumes sessions in
January 2015.
“So imbestigahan ‘yan sa Enero
itong mga airlines na palaging delayed,
na palaging hindi nagbibigay ng ta-
mang serbisyo pero napakataas pa rin
ng presyo ng pamasahe sa eroplano
kahit bumaba na ng 40 percent ang
world prices sa gasoline,” he said.
LPG Marketer’s Association Rep.
Arnel Ty, meanwhile, reiterated his
previous call for a rollback in the prices
of electricity and basic commodities.
“Malaking bagay din ang pagbaba
ng presyo ng petrolyo dahil ito ‘yung
historical draft ng world market…Ang
goods ay affected ng pagbaba na ito,
mapa-bakal man ‘yan o kung ano mang
basic commodities ang ating ginagamit
sa ngayon ay may effect po ‘yan. So
we are urging DTI to continue for the
call to pagbaba ng mga presyo,” he
said. (ABS-CBN News)
CEB launches mobile
check-in option
Cebu Pacific Air (PSE:CEB) rolls out its mobile check-in option,
just in time for the holidays. Mobile check-in joins web check-in,
self check-in kiosks at the airport, and Agent Xpress (roving airport agents equipped with tablets) as alternate forms of check-in
for CEB flights.
“With the peak travel season upon us, CEB introduces more
check-in options, so guests will be empowered to manage their
trips. With check-in counter space limitations in airports such as
Manila or Kalibo, we encourage more guests to check-in online
to avoid the line,” said CEB VP for Marketing and Distribution
Candice Iyog.
The CEB mobile app is now available on the App Store, so
guests can check-in using their mobile devices and book their
flights on the go. While initially available for iOS devices, CEB
is scheduled to roll out a version for Android devices soon.
Mobile check-in is available from 72 hours up to four hours for
international flights, and up to two hours for domestic flights. Seats
will be automatically be assigned for those with no pre-purchased
seat assignments. Boarding passes can be emailed, saved as an
image, sent as an MMS or printed straight from the iPhone.
Guests can do mobile check-in for up to 14 passengers. It will be
initially available for those with web or mobile bookings only.
The mobile check-in service is not available for guests with
infants, interline or check-through flights, or those requiring special
handling, as they have to go through the usual check-in process.
Those who also wish to book flights can do so using the Cebu
Pacific mobile app. CEB and Tigerair Philippines flights, prepaid
baggage allowance and seat selection may be booked for up to
14 guests. Only credit cards are accepted for mobile app flight
bookings.
“We also remind guests to be at the airport at least three hours
before their flights, and prepare for possible high volume of traffic
during this time,” Iyog added.

9-month sin tax collection reached P91.6B
MANILA – The Bureau of
Internal Revenue has collected
P91.64 billion in sin taxes
from January to September,
this year.
The tax bureau once again
exceeded its nine-month
sin tax collection target due
to the nearly double than
expected excise tax payments
by cigarette manufacturers,
data from the Department of
Finance showed.
The total collection from
tobacco and liquor products
is 42 percent more than the
P64.54 billion nine-month
target set by government.
Government revenues
from so-called sin products
also grew by 40 percent
from P65.45 billion yearon-year.
BIR Commissioner Kim
Henares attributed the higher
than expected revenues from
tobacco and liquor products
to the steady consumption of
cigarettes despite a series of
tax increases since January
2013.
Henares said cigarette
prices in the country remained
relatively cheap compared
t o pri ces i n neighboring
countries.
HV
percent short of the P30.39
billion target. The figure was
an 11 percent increase yearon-year from P24 billion.
The government is
expecting sin taxes to reach
P110.33 billion this year,
P72.12 billion of which are
expected to come from tobacco
while P38.21 billion will come
from alcoholic products.
Henares said she is
confident that the BIR will
exceed its target for the year.
Next year, the BIR is tasked
to collect P130 billion from
sin products. (ABS-CBNnews.

MA Films, Agosto Dos Pictures and Reality
Entertainment yesterday signed a partnership to
continue the franchise of the exclusive actionadventure series The Aswang Chronicles. The contractsigning was held at the Executive Lounge of GMA Network
Center in Quezon City recently.
GMA Films President Annette Gozon– Abrogar promises
that the partnership will continue to produce quality
entertainment to the viewers. She also mentioned that the
three film outfits’ entry to the Metro Manila Film Festival
Kubot: The Aswang Chronicles is definitely better than the
first one – from storyline, special effects to other production
essentials. “The challenge of having a franchise is that every
new release has to be better than the previous one. We will
meet that goal with Kubot as well as for the future sequels.
That is our commitment.”
Dingdong Dantes, who plays the main character in the
film and is also one of the producers, has put his entire
faith on The Aswang Chronicles franchise. He expressed
how each of them is sharing the same passion, which is to
create and produce innovative films and promised that as
long as they get people entertained, they won’t stop making
films.
“I treat the franchise, The Aswang Chronicles, as well
as sa lahat ng artistang kasama ko, as really something na
proud kaming i-share sa mga tao. Hangga’t marami kaming
mapapasaya na mga manonood andyan ang partnership
namin ng mga producers to give the audience what they
deserve,” says Dingdong.
Meanwhile, Kubot: The Aswang Chronicles is the official
entry of GMA Films, Agostos Dos Pictures and Reality
Entertainment at the 40th Metro Manila Film Festival. 3
