ART SONGS by JULIANA HALL
Art song composer Juliana Hall has written more than 35 song
cycles and her commissions include cycles for Metropolitan
Opera singers Dawn Upshaw and David Malis.
Her music has been heard in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and
North and South America, at venues including Weill Recital Hall
at Carnegie Hall (New York, NY); the Ordway Theater (Saint Paul, MN);
the Library of Congress (Washington, DC); Ambassador Auditorium
(Los Angeles, CA); the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum (Boston, MA);
Wigmore Hall (London, UK); and the Théâtre du Châtelet (Paris, FR).
Hall’s songs have also been performed at the Norfolk Chamber
Music, Ojai, and Tanglewood music festivals, as well as Songfest
and the Fall Island Vocal Arts Institute. Concerts at dozens of
colleges, conservatories, and universities have included her
songs, and they have been taught at schools including the
Juilliard School and the Cincinnati College-Conservatory.
Radio broadcasts include the BBC and NPR, and her songs have
been issued on the Albany and Vienna Modern Masters labels.
Juliana Hall studied with Martin Bresnick, Leon Kirchner, and
Frederic Rzewski at the Yale School of Music, and she completed
her formal studies with Dominick Argento. In 1989 she was
awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in Music Composition.
