Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-11
The spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me;
he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners;
to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor, and the day of vengeance of our God;
to comfort all who mourn; to provide for those who mourn in Zion—
to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning,
the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit.
They will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, to display his
glory. They shall build up the ancient ruins, they shall raise up the former devastations;
they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations.
For I the LORD love justice, I hate robbery and wrongdoing; I will faithfully give them
their recompense, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.
Their descendants shall be known among the nations, and their offspring among the
peoples; all who see them shall acknowledge that they are a people whom the LORD
has blessed.
I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my whole being shall exult in my God;
for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe
of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns
herself with her jewels.
For as the earth brings forth its shoots, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to
spring up, so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all
the nations.

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. John
People:
Glory to you, Lord Christ.
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify
to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he
came to testify to the light.
This is the testimony given by John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from
Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?" He confessed and did not deny it, but confessed,
"I am not the Messiah." And they asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I
am not." "Are you the prophet?" He answered, "No." Then they said to him, "Who are
you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?" He
said, "I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, `Make straight the way of the
Lord,'" as the prophet Isaiah said. Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. They
asked him, "Why then are you baptizing if you are neither the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor
the prophet?" John answered them, "I baptize with water. Among you stands one
whom you do not know, the one who is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the
thong of his sandal." This took place in Bethany across the Jordan where John was
baptizing.

The Confession and Absolution
All: Merciful God, we have sinned in what we have thought and said, in the
wrong we have done and in the good we have not done. We have sinned in
ignorance: we have sinned in weakness: we have sinned through our own
deliberate fault. We are truly sorry. We repent and turn to you.
Forgive us, for our Savior Christ’s sake, and renew our lives to the glory of
your name. Amen.
Presider: Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through the
grace of Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy
Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.
The Peace
Presider: Send your Holy Spirit, that we who receive Christ’s body may indeed be the

The People greet one another in the Name of Christ
The Announcements
People: Called to follow Christ, help us to reconcile and unite. Called to suffer,
give us hope in our calling.
Presider: For you, the heavenly one, make all things new; you are the beginning and the
end, the last and the first. Praise, glory and love be yours, this and every day, for us and
all people, here and everywhere. AMEN.
The Lord’s Prayer
As our Savoir Christ has taught us, we now pray using contemporary words
All: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will
be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as
we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us
from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever.
Amen.
The Breaking of the Bread

Presider Lift up your hearts.

Presider Let us give thanks to God.
People It is right to give God thanks and praise.
Presider: It is the joy of our salvation, God of the universe, to give you thanks through
Jesus Christ. You said, ‘Let there be light’; there was light. Your light shines on in our
darkness. For you the earth has brought forth life in all its forms. You created us to
hear your Word, to do your will and to be fulfilled in your love. It is right to thank you.
You sent your Son to be for us the way we need to follow and the truth we need to
know. He is coming to reconcile and forgive. Christ is the new beginning. You sent
your Son to give his life to release us from our sin. His cross has taken our guilt away.
You send your Holy Spirit, to strengthen and to guide, to warn and to revive your
Church. Therefore, with all your witnesses who surround us on every side, countless as
the stars in heaven, we praise you for our creation and our calling, with loving and
joyful hearts we sing together:

Presider & People: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might Heaven and earth are full,
If you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you are welcome to share in the Bread and Wine of
Communion, regardless of your denominational background. Come to the rail at the direction of the ushers.
Stand or kneel at the rail and receive the bread (a wafer) in the palm of your hand. Receive the wine either
by drinking from the cup (guiding it to your lips) or by touching the wafer, which you have retained, lightly to
the wine, being careful not to touch your fingers to the wine. If you decide not to receive the Bread and/or the
Wine and would prefer to receive a blessing, simply cross your arms over your chest. If you are in need of a
Gluten-free wafer instead of the regular bread wafer, please indicate this to the clergy at the time you are
receiving communion.

The Recessional
Presider continues: Blessed are you, most holy in your Son, who washed his disciples’
feet. ‘I am among you as one who serves,’ he said. On that night before he died he
took bread and gave you thanks. He broke it, gave it to his disciples, and said: Take,
eat, this is my body which is given for you; do this to remember me. After supper, he
took the cup, and gave you thanks. He gave it to them and said: Drink this. It is my
blood of the new covenant, shed for you, shed for all, to forgive sin; do this to
remember me. Therefore with this bread and wine we recall your goodness to us as we
say together:
People: God of the past and present, we your people remember your Son. We
thank you for his cross and rising again, we take courage from his ascension; we
look for his coming in glory and in him we give ourselves to you.
Enriching Our Worship
Presider & People:
Most loving God, creator and redeemer, we give you thanks for this foretaste of
your glory. Through Christ, and with all your saints, we offer ourselves and our
lives to your service. Send us out in the power of your Spirit, to stand with you in
your world. We ask this through Jesus Christ, the servant, our friend and brother.
Amen.
