The Voluntary “Prière à Notre-Dame” from Suite gothique The Processional “Hark! the glad sound!” standing Léon Boëllmann Hymnal 72 Opening Acclamation Presider Blessed are you, holy and living One. People You come to your people to set them free. Collect for Purity Song of Praise “Tell out, my soul” Hymnal 437 BCP 212 The Collect of the Day THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD The First Lesson sitting Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-11 The spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners; to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; to provide for those who mourn in Zion— to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit. They will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, to display his glory. They shall build up the ancient ruins, they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations. For I the LORD love justice, I hate robbery and wrongdoing; I will faithfully give them their recompense, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them. Their descendants shall be known among the nations, and their offspring among the peoples; all who see them shall acknowledge that they are a people whom the LORD has blessed. I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my whole being shall exult in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as the earth brings forth its shoots, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up, so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations. Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. Psalm 126 BCP 782 Sequence Anthem (at 9:45) “This is the record of John” Orlando Gibbons The Gospel standing John 1:6-8, 19-28 Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. John People: Glory to you, Lord Christ. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. This is the testimony given by John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?" He confessed and did not deny it, but confessed, "I am not the Messiah." And they asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the prophet?" He answered, "No." Then they said to him, "Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?" He said, "I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, `Make straight the way of the Lord,'" as the prophet Isaiah said. Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. They asked him, "Why then are you baptizing if you are neither the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?" John answered them, "I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not know, the one who is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandal." This took place in Bethany across the Jordan where John was baptizing. Gospeller: The Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Confession and Absolution All: Merciful God, we have sinned in what we have thought and said, in the wrong we have done and in the good we have not done. Forgive us, for our Savior Christ’s sake, and renew our lives to the glory of your name. Amen. Presider: Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through the grace of Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Presider: It is the joy of our salvation, God of the universe, to give you thanks through Jesus Christ. You said, ‘Let there be light’; there was light. Your light shines on in our darkness. For you the earth has brought forth life in all its forms. You created us to hear your Word, to do your will and to be fulfilled in your love. It is right to thank you. You sent your Son to be for us the way we need to follow and the truth we need to know. He is coming to reconcile and forgive. Christ is the new beginning. You sent your Son to give his life to release us from our sin. His cross has taken our guilt away. You send your Holy Spirit, to strengthen and to guide, to warn and to revive your Church. Therefore, with all your witnesses who surround us on every side, countless as the stars in heaven, we praise you for our creation and our calling, with loving and joyful hearts we sing together: Proulx People: We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. If you decide not to receive the Bread and/or the Wine and would prefer to receive a blessing, simply cross your arms over your chest. If you are in need of a Gluten-free wafer instead of the regular bread wafer, please indicate this to the clergy at the time you are receiving communion. Communion Motet (9:45) “Panis angelicus” Post Communion Prayer kneeling The Blessing Eucharistic Prayer The Recessional Presider continues: Blessed are you, most holy in your Son, who washed his disciples’ feet. ‘I am among you as one who serves,’ he said. On that night before he died he took bread and gave you thanks. He broke it, gave it to his disciples, and said: Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you; do this to remember me. After supper, he took the cup, and gave you thanks. He gave it to them and said: Drink this. It is my blood of the new covenant, shed for you, shed for all, to forgive sin; do this to remember me. Therefore with this bread and wine we recall your goodness to us as we say together: People: God of the past and present, we your people remember your Son. We thank you for his cross and rising again, we take courage from his ascension; we look for his coming in glory and in him we give ourselves to you. Enriching Our Worship Presider & People: Most loving God, creator and redeemer, we give you thanks for this foretaste of your glory.
