Myrtle Beach Boardwalk and Plyler Park Come support the Grand Strand Humane Society through the 2014 Santa Paws Costume Contest from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., Saturday, December 27. (Due to expected inclement weather on December 20, the date has been moved back a week.) Get pictures of your dressed-up pooch with Santa Claus! The Boardwalk Parade and judging will be from 2:30 to 3:00 p.m. First, second and third place prizes will be announced on the “I Love Sugar” stage, near the SkyWheel. Registration is $10 per pooch (cash only) and begins at 2:00 p.m. Myrtle Beach Fire Department’s Santa Detail 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., Sunday, December 21 Neighborhoods throughout the city Santa Claus will visit neighborhoods throughout the city from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., Sunday, December 21. The Myrtle Beach Fire Department will provide a big red sleigh (better known as a fire truck) for Santa’s rounds. This is a 16-team, national invitation tournament with top high school talent from around the country. Visit any CresCom Bank for information on FREE tickets to all girls’ basketball games, except college games. Speaking of college games, the University of Maine’s women face the UNC Chapel Hill women at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, December 18. Then UNC Chapel Hill plays Elon University’s women at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, December 21, followed at 5:00 p.m. by the Coastal Carolina University women vs. the St. Francis University women. Visit http://www.beachballclassic.com for more information. 2014 Beach Ball Classic Boys’ Basketball Tournament December 26 – 31 Myrtle Beach Convention Center http://www.beachballclassic.com The 34th annual Beach Ball Classic Boys’ Basketball tournament is December 26 – 31 at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. This is the nation’s premier high school holiday tournament! Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling 843-213-0032 or at the Convention Center on game days. Myrtle Beach Holiday Schedules City Offices and Solid Waste Services Christmas and New Year’s Weeks City offices will be closed Thursday and Friday, December 25 and 26, for Christmas, and Thursday, January 1, for New Year’s Day. For Monday through Thursday, December 22-26, here’s how collections will occur… The Zone 1 route will be serviced as usual on Monday, December 22. The Zone 2 route will be serviced as usual on Tuesday, December 23. Both Zones 3 and Zone 4 will be serviced on Wednesday, December 24. No collection services will be offered on Thursday December 25 or Friday, December 26. Solid waste and recycling will be collected as usual the New Year’s week of December 29 – January 1. Questions? Throughout the Year Various Locations in Myrtle Beach Wednesday, December 31, 10:00 p.m. – Broadway at the Beach Christmas Tree Recycling Curbside or Drop-Off January and February The City of Myrtle Beach will pick up Christmas trees at curbside and take them to be recycled beginning in January. Please place trees at the curb, but not in the travel lane, and don’t cover any utility meters or boxes. Also, please remove all decorations and tree stands! If you don’t want to wait for curbside pickup, you may take your tree to the drop-off point on Mr. Joe White Avenue at 21st Avenue North Extension (behind Myrtle Waves Water Park). In late February, the trees will be ground, and the resulting mulch will be available to the public for free. FIRST Robotics Regional Competition – Volunteers welcome! Friday and Saturday, February 27 – 28, 2015 Myrtle Beach Convention Center The Myrtle Beach Convention Center again will be the site of the Palmetto Regional FIRST Robotics Competition, February 27 and 28, 2015. In all, 66 teams of high school students from South Carolina and the East Coast will build their own robots to compete in this fast-paced event. Teams warm up Thursday, February 26, with robot inspections and practice rounds, followed by the high-energy tournament on Friday and Saturday. Admission is free! Come to the Area Business Disaster Recovery Symposium from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Friday, January 30, at the Sheraton Myrtle Beach Convention Center Hotel. The Area Business Disaster Symposium will help a business focus on planning for any type of interruption. The symposium will cover business interruption insurance, what FEMA requires, emergency funding and loans, business continuity planning, and how to deal with stress during and after a disaster. Including lunch and refreshments, registration is just $25 per person until January 26. After that date and at the door (while space lasts), registration is $30 per person.
