LEARNING
EMOTIONS
AT
GSES: In first grade at Gulf Shores
Elementary School in Mrs. Tammy
Shirley’s Class, the students have
been learning about emotions from
Mrs. Kathy Corlew, special education
teacher. Mrs. Corlew had the students use their iPads and get a picture
taken
showing
different
emotions—happy, sad, mad, excited,
and worried. The students had to decide which emotion was being shown
from the picture on the iPad. They
also learned about how to respond to
their friends when these emotions
happen. At the end, the students
were displaying a happy emotion! Pictured: (above) Portia hollis, Michael

Naval Sea Cadets
GSPD Citizen’s Police Academy starts Jan. 13
The Gulf Shores Police Department will host its 2nd Annual
enrolling kids 13-18
Citizen’s Police Academy beginning Tuesday, January 13, 2015.
The group will meet every Tuesday evening from 6 p.m. until 9
p.m. at the Police Department, located at 220 Clubhouse Drive.
The Citizen’s Police Academy is a partnership with the citizens
of Gulf Shores and the Gulf Shores Police Department. The benefits of such a partnership can only help strengthen the entire
community in public safety and quality of life.
A police agency cannot be effective without the trust of its citizens. The Citizen Police Academy program builds that trust.
Through education, it provides a bridge between the officer in
the car and the citizens in the field. Citizens will gain an appreciation of the problems and challenges facing law enforcement
and have an opportunity to offer comments and ideas regarding
solutions.
Those citizens then become the police department’s “goodwill
ambassadors” throughout the community. As a result graduates
are better equipped to assess safety issues, and share with others their knowledge of law enforcement practices and policies.
There are several hands-on exercises and, at the end of the program, you will participate in role play exercises and make decisions as a police officer would. you will also be automatically
signed up for a 4-hour “Ride Along” and ride with an officer to
see first-hand what happens on the street.
NAS Pensacola's uS Naval
Sea Cadet Corps (13-18
years old) and uS Navy
League Cadet Corps (11-14
years old) is enrolling interested youths. The unit meets

Cadets participate in civic
activities and training
events to develop in them a
sense of pride, patriotism,
courage, and self-reliance.
The program is open to both
military and non-military affiliated youths. Adult volunteers are also welcome. For

A deserving Roast for Flora-Bama’s Joe Gilchrist
Accolades were numerous, as were personal stories paying
tribute to the man’s innate generosity. Recognition awards
and proclamations came from as far away as New york City
and Washington, and included presentations from county
commissioners, 4-star generals and various other elected
and appointed officials.
But the highlight of the Dec. 15 roast of Flora-Bama owner
Joe Gilchrist was a story from John McInnis, co-owner of
the best known beach bar in the country. The story was
about a road trip a group of Panhandle business owners
took to South Florida for a George W. Bush re-election
fundraiser. In the car on the way to the event, McInnis was
impressed that Gilchrist was wearing a dress shirt, tie and
sports jacket. But less so when he looked down and saw
Gilchrist was planning to meet the president while wearing
a pair of 10-year-old white Rebook tennis shoes.
A reticent McInnis gathered his courage and offered to
buy Gilchrist a new pair of shoes at a Parisians they passed
on the way to the fundraiser. Gilchrist agreed.
McInnis could not have known that 15 years later, he
would be talking from the Flora-Bama inside stage as
Gilchrist’s partner. But the story set the table for a night
full of laughter.
Publicist Dell Long organized and scheduled the roast,
which drew a standing room crowd and included musical
tributes from Flora-Bama musicians, including the lounge’s
original troubadour, Ken Lambert. Long will post a thank
you to those who helped with the three hour event in the
