Leonard N. Peterson Copied in part and with permission from jppc.net Mary and Joseph obey the Hebrew law and present their son to the Lord at the Jerusalem temple. How startled they must have been when old Simeon gently took the Child in his aged arms and then praised God for letting him see the Savior. He goes on to make some powerful predictions about both the Child and His Mother. About Jesus: a sign to be contradicted. About Mary: a sword wound to be repeated. Our focus all these centuries later is not on the future, but on the family present before us in this scriptural scene. They are a true family, a holy family. Forever bearing witness to the nobility of that unit of society by which God chose to enter our history. Certainly the observant among us could easily draw up a list of what ails the family today. Forces in our culture have successfully attacked and introduced corrosion to traditional family life, and have been proud of it. The call of our Church today is for us to take back what has been cleverly undermined if not stolen from us. To see clearly that family life has an innate importance in the secular community and in the life of our Church that is irreplaceable. The primary agents of that vision of course are parents strong enough to resist the tug of the tide. Without that leadership, supported by prayer and all of us together, you will not need a fortune teller to predict what will happen. A Prayer for Families Heavenly Father, You have given us the model of life in the Holy Family of Nazareth. Help us, O Loving Father, to make our family another Nazareth where love, peace and joy reign. May it be deeply contemplative, intensely Eucharistic, revived with joy. Help us to stay together in joy and sorrow in family prayer. Teach us to see Jesus in the members of our families, especially in their distressing disguise. May the Eucharistic heart of Jesus make our hearts humble like His and help us to carry out our family duties in a holy way. May we love one another as God loves each one of us, more and more each day, and forgive each other's faults as You forgive our sins. Help us, O Loving Father, to take whatever You give and give whatever You take with a big smile. Immaculate Heart of Mary, cause of our joy, pray for us. St. Joseph, pray for us. Consider this story about a daughter, a lawyer who lived 500 miles away from her father. They had not seen each other in a number of months. The father calls her up and asks, “When are you going to visit?” The daughter proceeds to tell him about the demands on her time, everything that prevented her from visiting. So the father says, “I’ve been wondering about this for some time now. When I die, do you intend to come to my funeral?” The lawyer responds, “Dad! I can’t believe you’d ask that. Of course I’d come to your funeral.” The father replies, “Good. Let’s make a deal. Forget the funeral. I need you more now than I will then.” Holy Guardian Angels, be always with us, guide and protect us. Amen A Prayer for Families ~by Blessed Mother Teresa "Family is the fundamental cell of society, where we learn to live with others despite their differences and belong to one another. It is also the place where parents pass on the faith to their children.” - Pope Francis 556-Page 3 The Feast of Mary, the Mother of God January 1, 2015 A Holy Day of Obligation Vigil Mass – Wednesday, Dec. 31, - 6:00 PM The Feast of Mary, the Mother of God January 1, 2015 Thursday, January 1, – 8:00 & 10:00 AM Attending Mass today is also a wonderful way to start the New Year. “Mother of God”, like many of Mary’s titles, is Christ-centered. It was, and is, used to teach about the Incarnation (God being born as man) and the Divinity of Christ. In the early fourth century the Church was faced with a heresy called Nestorianism which taught that Jesus was born human and the divine entered Him at a later date. This was a denial of the Incarnation. In 431 AD the Council of Ephesus was convened to clarify the teachings about the nature of Christ. By referring to Mary as the Mother of God, the Council reiterated that Jesus was always both fully human (His mother was human) and fully divine (His mother is the mother of God) – one Divine person, two natures (human and divine). This is the central belief of the Incarnation and has always been the central teaching of our Church. While today’s feast is about the nature of Christ and the fulfillment of God’s plan of salvation, it is also about Mary as a model for all believers. Mary accepted in faith what she had been told, put her trust in God and followed where He led her. This feast reminds us that we are called to do the same. As we prepare for this New Year, let us ask for God’s grace and blessing and for the faith and trust to be able to follow His will. Prayer: Father; as we proclaim the Virgin Mary to be the mother of Christ and the mother of the Church, may our communion with her Son bring us to eternal salvation. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Flowers for Our Blessed Mother January 1, Feast of Mary, the Mother of God The flowers for our Blessed Mother have been offered in memory of Myra Wisniewski from her family. If you would like to donate the flowers for a Marian feast day, please contact the parish office. Happy New Year! O God, from age to age You are our comforter. You have given us the wonder of time, and blessings in days and nights, seasons and years. Bless us, Your children at the turning of this New Year and fill the months ahead with the bright hope that is ours in the coming of Christ, Your Son. We pray this in Jesus name. Amen. May God bless you and your families throughout the New Year! From the clergy, religious, and parish staff of St. Mary of the Lakes Church. 556-Page 4 Caring for Homeless Families An opportunity to help families in need. You may feel a deep numbness and may not be able to name the pain or recognize any of the symptoms. It can also have a devastating impact on the father or grandparents of the aborted child and friend/s of the mother. You do not have to continue to hide in shame and fear. Rachel’s Vineyard’s Retreat is a chance to focus on this painful time in your life through a supportive non-judgmental process, in an atmosphere of confidentiality, understanding, and compassion. It is designed to help both women and men experience the mercy and compassion of God. If you have suffered through an abortion and have isolated yourself from healing and forgiveness, you might consider attending one our retreat weekends. For more information, contact: Judy Warenkiewicz at: 732-536-6871. All inquiries are strictly confidential. 2015 Weekend Retreats: Liturgical Ministry Schedule Due to circumstances beyond our control, next week’s liturgical ministry schedule will not be in this week’s bulletin. In January will resume posting the schedule in the bulletin. Mission of Love ~ Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta Each person’s mission is a mission of love…Begin where you are, with the people closest to you. Make your homes centers of compassion and forgive endlessly. Let no one ever come to you without coming away better and happier…At the hour of death when we come face-to-face with God, we are going to be judged on love; not how much we have done, but how much love we put into the doing. A New Year’s Invitation from Pope Francis “I invite all Christians everywhere to a renewed personal encounter with Jesus Christ, or at least an openness to letting Him encounter you. I ask you to do this unfailingly each day.” - Pope Francis in “The Joy of the Gospel”. The Importance of families praying together In the light of God’s word, I would like to ask you, dear families: Do you pray together from time to time as a family? Some of you do, I know. But so many people say to me: How can we? Prayer is something personal, and besides there is never a good time, a moment of peace… Yes, all that is true enough, but it is also a matter of humility, of realizing that we need God, like the tax collector! And we need simplicity! Praying the Our Father together, around the table, is something all of you can do. And praying the Rosary together, as a family, is very beautiful and a source of great strength! And praying for one another! - Pope Francis 556-Page 8 THE LAW OFFICE Parishioner OF DAVID J.
